No enthusiasm to intervene

Why doesn’t George W. Bush care about the crisis in Haiti? Simple it’s
an election year and he has more pressing issues to tend to. Like his
National Guard pay stubs from the Vietnam era.
Over the past several weeks protests against Haitian president
Jean-Bertrand Aristide have broken out into violence. The protests, at
first peaceful, have become bloody gunfights in city streets and
across the countryside, between the president’s police and armed
citizens. The violence in Haiti is the latest installment in the saga
of Aristide, who was ousted from the presidency in 1991 and exiled for
three years in the US. Aristide was then restored to power in 1994 by
the US during the Clinton administration.
Neither the US government nor any of Haiti’s more powerful neighbors
seem to care. On Tuesday in a press conference Sec. of State Colin
Powell, stated that the US has "no enthusiasm", to intervene. Bush’s
foreign policy is an enigma; topple a government on the other side of
the world. But refuse to step in your own backyard. Maybe it’s because
the Haitian people don’t possess any oil or Haiti is one of the
Western Hemisphere’s poorest and most under developed countries
The rebellion against Aristide is mainly because citizens feel that
Aristide has let them down. A former priest, Aristide was elected by
the people who believed he would put and end to a long history of
political turmoil, and began to develop Haiti. Once he was elected
Aristide allowed fraudulent parliamentary elections and violence by
his supporters against his detractors.
The Bush administration has thus far refused to take any military
action or even come up a viable diplomatic solution. They seem to be
waiting for Haiti’s Caribbean neighbors to do something. The US lack
of "enthusiasm" to help is ironic and irresponsible considering, US
action thrust Haiti into its current situation. It abolished Haiti
army which, ousted Aristide and removed US troops from the country
after only two years.
However, US troops still remain in Kosovo and Bosnia, where they have
been for five and eight years respectively.
Haiti is only about 600 miles from Florida. The president would rather
leave finding a solution, to France, the UN, and the Organization of
American States.
