The provocative decision by the government of the Former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia (FYROM) to rename the airport in capital Skopje after Alexander
the Great proves that as long as the name dispute with Greece remains
unresolved, it will continue to have a deleterious effect on bilateral
relations and also influence broader political implications.
Unless an honest and mutually accepted compromise is reached on the name
issue between the two neighboring states, the Greek Parliament (whether it
is led by a conservative or a Socialist majority) is not going to give FYROM
the go-ahead for the much-coveted membership of the NATO alliance.
Similarly, the government in Athens will most likely block the launching of
the country's European Union talks.
In light of the current deadlock on the name issue, which has been a problem
for years, the visit of United Nations mediator Matthew Nimetz to the two
capitals will offer a chance to lift the deadlock.
Skopje's evasive tactics, which have managed to keep FYROM away from serious
negotiations on the name issue, cannot continue. If these tactics go on,
they will cause more damage and Skopje may have to pay the costs.
There is simply too much at stake, as FYROM's membership of the EU and the
transatlantic alliance is vital for our neighbor's very survival.

The U. N. mediator Mr Mathew Nimits came to the meeting with the
Macedonian government from Athens without any new proposal.
The only thing that he brought was the complain of the decision
to rename the airport in Skopje as "Alexander the Great".
On the meeting yeaterday took part as the President Branko Cevenkovski,
as the Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski and the Minister of Foreign
Affairs Antonio Miloshoski, anf the Macedonian envoy for the
negotiations with Greece Nikola Dimitrov. On the meeting, that
took half an hour, again the Macedonian position has been
declared without changes - the so-called Double Formula, that
has been rejected by Greece. According to that formula, in
the relations with Greece the name "Republic of Macedonia - Skopje"
will
be used, and in all other relations, including with U. N., NATO, and
EU - the constitutional name "Republic of Macedonia".
Greece insists on the name "Republic of Macedonia - Skopje"
as the only name for general use.
The Republic of Macedonia has full diplomatic relations with
155 countries in the world. From them 133 countries have
recognized the constitutional name - "Republic of
Macedonia" - amongst them the three members of the
Security Counsil of U. N. - the U. S. A., Russia and China.
In the former 2006 year the Parliaments of two
countries - members of the EU - Great Britain and Germany -
demanded from their governments to recognize the
constitutional name of the country. The procedure
of recognition is going on.

The last time Greece enforced an embargo on FYROM you were about to
disintegrate as a country...
Now that Greece is the number one investor in FYROM, owing more than half of
your infrastructure industries (refineries, banks, mobile communications,
tobacco and beer companies, etc) it will be much more painful for you if you
will
stay out of NATO/EU...
