Beanie there's not much to understand about you: you are a real retard,

Hello,

I thought in this newsgroup *Greek culture* would be explored. However,
what I read in this thread, so far, appears to be a shame on any
culture at all.

Btw, the author mentioned is female.

I know what you mean. You'll have to filter out (perhaps mentally) the
flame fests going on. This group here has to deal with the presence of a
mentally sick Turk, posting here under more than 10 different screen
names. If you check his posting habits, you will see this person is not
just a troll but a truly mental case, a full-blown psychopath that would
rather see his own newsgroup (soc.culture.turkish) destroyed than refrain
from trashing this group with his idiocies.

If you got the leisure you might also want to check the behaviour of a few
other Turks in these groups, at least you'll learn something about the
Turkish character in general. ;-)

Yeah, it is about Greek Culture, Greek Culture is all about xenophobia and
hate anything that doesn't have anything to do with Greek or Greece.

The list includes all Muslims, the Brits, the Americans, most European
countries and of course the country who'se been kicking the Greeks up the
back side for centuries, namely Turkey.

There's a very famous saying in Greece, "The only friends the Greeks have
are the Greeks". That alone says enough about what the Greeks think of the
rest of the worlds population.

You are right !
Unfortunately a couple of extremist Turkish TROLLS have invaded this ng and
they are trying to destroy it.
Please ignore them and ask your questions whenever you want.
Discuss only with decent posters and just disregard the rest.

No problem Frank.
It is about time for the scg to become again a place where *decent* people
can exchange ideas without been insulted, etc...
Unfortunately we must learn to live with the TROLLS, so the only way to have
peace of mind is to disregard them or even better put the in the killfile.
Seanie, raffin, trnc, etc are your first candidates for your killfile ;-)

That is exactly what I'd appreciate, gogu.

Btw, I am an internationally minded German who has /for a number of
years/ lived (university studies and management job assignments) in
France (Sorbonne, Paris) and in the USA (Forth Worth/Texas, San
Francisco/California, Manhattan/New York) - and who has travelled a
lot on both continents, too. Photographing is one of my hobbies as
well. But, I've nothing published as far as pics are concerned.

Well, having an open mind and leaving behind the prejudices someone grown
with is a great thing, we all must try to do that and have an open mind as
you say.
Admittedly some times this is difficult to achieve, especially considering
the criminal actions of such vile Turks like Seanie & Co...
I mean I am a Greek but I have no hatred for the Turks but when Seanie is
wishing *DEATH* to my daughter, well, I don't know...
Of course it is not correct to dislike all the Turks because of some
criminal Turks like Seanie & Co, but some time it's so hard to achieve
this...

Yes, Frank, we all are Greeks despite what lies this sad Turkish troll is
spreading around.
Most of us we live in Greece but there are a few posters living abroad.
Just ignore the sad Turkish troll and his many incarnations and you'll have
a pleasant discussion with any Greek in here.

Sorry, gogu, I don't know Richmond, NJ. I've only heard of
Richmond, Virginia.

In New Jersey I've been (on business) in the area adjacent to
Manhattan and frequently in Sommerville where the US headquarters of a
German chemical corporation are situated.

I do know the Garden State Parkway down to Cape May as well as the
Princeton University. In winter, I was, several times, skiing in Great

But, obviously, you meant Jersey, VA (between Washington, DC, and
Richmond).

I've once visited Washington (privately).

Otherwise I do know the USA from east to west and from north to south.

No, no, it means that I lived in Firenze when I was studying in Italy for
about 5 years ;-)

> Or perhaps you'd say that you visited Firenze frequently and you like

See above.

>> > In what type of business is your own company in?

> Well, that's tremendous!
> It's booming as well in Greece, I guess, as in the Eastern countries,

This is true.
Unfortunately in Greece it looks it will be a recession in the private
constructions sector for two reasons:

One, from the 1st of January 2006 VAT is introduced to the selling of
apartments, offices, etc. Until now any kind of transaction regarding
immobile was VAT exempt, there were only around 10-11% various taxes. Now
this is replaced by VAT, which is 19%... If with the application of the VAT
the
government will abolish/replace the older taxes, there will always be an
increase in prices of around 8-9%... And that's bad for business.

Two, the prices on which the tax is calculated are going to increase,
taxation will increase, people will buy with greater difficulty a house...
Prices on which taxes are calculated are part of a complex system; the
government puts an arbitrary price per square meter in every city or suburb
of Greece and then there are factors that increase or decrease this unitary
price: if house or apartment, which floor is the apartment, if it looks in
front or in the back of the block, year of construction, etc, etc, etc. So
if unitary prices are increased by the government (they are seeking to find
more money for the budget...), the final price of the house will increase,
taxes will increase, thus housing becomes more expensive for the average
Greek, = less people will buy a house, = recession in the constructions
business...

There is a last hope, the government is negotiating with the EU to reduce
the VAT for the "first house" to a low 4.5%, let's see if they'll succeed...

>> Similar.

> Thus, you are able to benefit from the family's traditional standing

From the know-how, yes, from their traditional standing, quite not.
They are in the public works, not in private constructions.

I understand that relevant problematic.

In Germany, too, we'll get a VAT increase after the next election in
autumn. And privately bought real estate (for the own family's use)
will most probably no longer get tax advantages over a 10 years'
period; and so on ...

Yes.
It is good though to have a local partner, too, especially in the former
communist countries.
We have a Romanian engineer to whom we gave a small percentage which for him
is actually too much, so he is taking care the more "delicate" problems of
our company there ;-)
My European partners OTOH, they are very helpful in certain sectors they
have better/greater experience...
Actually we have each one his own sector and our collaboration seem to work.
So yes, multinational partnerships looks like it works very well :-)

Ours will rise from now 16% to 18 or 19%. However, there are many
exemptions for special goods and services with a much lower rate.

At present, a German real estate buyer has to pay fees of about 10,8%;
i.e. tax for the object's acquiring 3,5%, legal contracting 1,5% and
real estate agent 5,8% (= 5% + 16% VAT). The agent's fee may be lower
in some cases. - It is not a legal necessity, though, to utilise the
service of such an agent, if seller and buyer are making the deal
directly among each other.

Well, to be more precise I lived in Firenze but I attended courses in Milan
and later in Rome...
I just liked Firenze and I decided to live there.
As my courses were asking to meet with a professor just once a week, it was
easy to stay in Firenze.

>> Maybe one of the best periods of my life...

> I've heard that many Greek co-eds (mostly females) are studying in

This is true.

> Is Firenze preferred, or what other cities, too?

Well, I'd say it's the less preferred as most of the Greeks are studying
medicine, economics, etc.
Only students who want to study architecture prefer Firenze but not only;
Venezia is one other pole of attraction for architecture students and Rome
and Milan are not coming shorter...

Yes.
England, France, USA, some of them Germany and Austria.

Nope, I am an Architect Engineer.

construct your "capolavoro" (:-)) the way you thought of it ;-)

Here the exceptions became rare lately...
Only food in the restaurant is 9%, also books and some services...

> At present, a German real estate buyer has to pay fees of about 10,8%;

Same here in Greece.
The total of the taxes on a real estate buy is around 11%.
With the implementation of the VAT they will abolish these taxes but housing
will still be around 8% more expensive if they will make the VAT 19%.
If the make the VAT 9% it will be a (theoretical) reduce of prices, but this
sounds like a good dream ;-)
The agent's fee is 2% from each part but it is calculated separately.
We, as constructors are paying just 1%.

During my studies (Economics and Business Administration) in Germany,
France and USA I've, unfortunately, never met any Greeks.

However, after my return from the USA, I had /professionally/ close
connections with two Greeks in a globally operating chemical and
pharmaceutical corporation (with about 150 subsidiaries worldwide).
It's been a) a chemist as the head of one of its diverse chemical
plants, and b) a chief logistics-software developer at the IT division.

Another fellow manager (a German chemist), chief of a special products
business area (Marketing, Manufacturing, R&D), with whom I used to
cooperate very closely, had been married with a Greek wife (a
publishing painter who had studied in Germany) whom I met rather
frequently, too, mostly after diverse events (i.e. conferences in
Bordeaux and elsewhere). Unfortunately, upon his retirement, they both
had a terrible accident - i.e. a gas explosion that was deadly for her
- on the Greek island where her family stems from. He (as survivor)
lives now in Germany in his house jointly with his - German born -
daughter.

I fully agree.

My experience is - business related though - with 'German speaking
Greeks' (see above) - and with some more in private contact - and
with people in or from France, Spain, UK, USA, Mexico, Japan, China,
India ... and /more privately/ Italy, Portugal ...

Big countries, many universities :-)
I believe that the second most preferred country by Greeks for studies is
UK, then maybe France, Germany and US.

American/Greek or "Greek/Greek" ?
I mean Greeks who were born there, American citizens, or Greeks who studied
there and then they decided to stay and work in the States ?

When we are talking about houses, we must separate it:
1) when you are building for the owner
2) when you are building on your own lot and then you sell them
In the first case you have to follow -more or less- the stylistic
preferences of the owner.
Of course you'll try to pass your own style but it depends on the owner: one
says "do it as you wish, I don't care, just do it beautiful and functional",
the other wants to control every detail down to the last brick, he thinks he
knows everything, he is a genius who unfortunately could no study because
the world didn't understand his genius ;-) First case best, second to
avoid...
When you are building on your own lot that's much easier but you have always
to follow the "personality" of the neighborhood you are building to... You
must always try to do something different if you don't want to make your
buildings look all the same :-) One thing I know, I detest post-modernism
;-)))

> Are they different in Northern Greek and e.g. in Romania?

Sure, quite a lot.
In Greece people ask for more modern and luxurious constructions, in Romania
those who can afford to buy a new flat they just want to use it to their
friends as a status symbol ;-) Many times they don't even know what to ask
for...
There are different needs in some part of the construction, the heating
system is different, many buildings do not use shutters as they don't have
such a strong sun there, etc.
Lately, there is this -late for us Europeans- mode of using plaster-board
(Knauff, etc) everywhere in their houses... I personally avoid to use this
material in private houses, it's so "cheap" and with a so "temporary"
look...

This is a new world and we must learn to live in it.
I was quite fortunate to live from very young abroad, so I have no
difficulties to live and/or work with foreign people.

Have a nice weekend, talk again next Monday.

This was reported from my 'German management experience' (after

Greece.

Do you mean this type of postmodernism?

Or even more way-out crazy-styled houses as they are known from
hypermodern architects for instance in Arizona or New Mexico (etc)?

Do you mean this type?
Or could you show another possibly more appropriate example?

How about using photovoltaic concepts in your architecture in Greece as
there is a lot of sun year-round?

*BP Solar* is an international leader (even though in that particular
Germany market) in PV systems; e.g.

http://www.bp.com/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=3050462&contentId=3060107

In the German soc.newsgroup on economics (dsw) we're currently
discussing such matters in a relevant thread that I had recently
initiated.

Christoph M. - an 'economics engineer' (Dipl.Wirt.Ing.) - has
given in this thread

http://groups.google.de/group/de.soc.wirtschaft/msg/e27896b338d8ba82

some examples (pics) on implemented PV systems on private houses in
(the German city) Ingolstadt:

Is this an architectural theme in Greece, too?

These are some of the "luckiest" examples of post-modernism :-)

Well, I am not sure what houses you have in mind -and may be some horrible
examples there as you say- but in Arizona and New Mexico exist some of the
luckiest examples of post modern architecture and not only !
In such a grade that even me who is a convinced anti-post modernist could
find to say a couple of good words about the architects who planned them ;-)
But I've seen also horrible houses in these 2 states, so I think I
understand your point...

Yes, you can see the "vulgar" richness around...
Uneducated people who made millions from dubious business, now they think
they know everything...
Sad...

Yes, Knauf, sorry for the double f.
Well, Knauf plasterboards are OK to use in offices but I try to avoid them
in houses.
But as I said, this type of plasterboards is the latest mode in Romania and
I am against it, they put it everywhere !
I acknowledge that they can be modeled in various ways and create a plastic
and attractive interior, but I believe that too much is ruining and has the
opposite -negative- effect...
You can also use "raw" gyps and make the forms you want in a mould and then
mount it to the place you want it (usually the ceiling).

> How about using photovoltaic concepts in your architecture in Greece as
> there is a lot of sun year-round?

Well, this is an interesting subject, long debated here but unfortunately
only in our universities and not in the society...
Greeks unfortunately do not show much respect for the environment, they
don't know and don't use in the extend they should the photovoltaic
elements.
OTOH, the heating of water from the sun is quite common, especially in the
islands.
I tried once to use photovoltaic elements in a villa I made for a friend in
Arta's mountains (that's in North-Western Greece) but there were many
insulation difficulties (-25 during the winter) as well as not specialized
workers, etc so we were forced to abandon our plan and change it...

Yes, it is strange that in northern countries people have such an evolved
(ecological) conscience regarding environment-friendly technologies using
the sun, the air, etc and us living in southern Europe with more than 300
sunny days a year are completely indifferent...

I am afraid it isn't...
Or to be more precise, there is such a theme but only among the specialists,
architects, etc and in a theoretical level...
Actually, the house I was telling you above was a solution much like the
3rd/4th/5th/7th/8th/9th pictures from the top.

I've watched, some time ago, a television report on that type of
architecture in these two US states. However, I didn't find (via
Google) appropriate websites showing some examples as I don't know
the special search-keywords. Are you able to present here some of the
'luckiest examples' that you appreciate?

I guess I do.

That's somehow equivalent to those self-made millionaires and
billionaires in the US. There, they are not admitted to the local
_country clubs_ -- an intricate-smart definition of who is
(society-wise) in or out.

But, I guess, in Romania such type of 'dubious greedy vulgar-rich
ones' might, at least, conquer the golf clubs (but not in conjunction
with country clubs or alike which probably don't exist there).

Yes, I understand.

Some examples:

We call it "Stuck" in German (gypsum made decorative parts). You
may see more of this type, e.g., at

To switch to more and more 'regenerative energy' on a long run is
not as much only for the sake of the environmental protection but more
in order to get away from coal, oil and gas as these resources will get
exhausted in the generations ahead.

The use of wind and bio-stuff is not so much growing as the
photovoltaic segment.

H2 is another option; - but is not as efficient (will be probably used
more in special cells and small aggregates).

Nuclear plants /as power stations/ are considered as too dangerous; -
at least in Germany under the present legislation period that is now
- after seven years - going to end (new election probably on
September 18).

The rapid development of the Chinese economy (3 billion people!) will
contribute to the shortening of mineral oil on the world market
especially.

Short of :-)

Exactly !
In these countries money can buy *everything*...
What brings tears in my eyes is the fact that many young people have them as
... symbols !
Sad...

Exactly !
And not only...
You can create entire arcs, concave forms, convex forms, etc.

I know but go tell it to the average "mediterranean" ;-)

Instead here in the islands wind generated electricity would be a great
thing, as we have rather windy islands !
As a matter of fact there are some windmill parks in a couple of islands,
the most known of them been in Chios if I am not mistaken.

I've read that the first plant producing energy from fusion will be made in
France !
Let's see what's going to be...

China is even worse than Greece in environmental pollution :-)
