[02] Cypriot MP's in OSCE session
Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- A Cyprus parliamentary delegation left today for
Copenhagen, to take part in the 7th Annual Session of the Parliamentary
Assembly of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The delegation comprises MPs Markos Kyprianou, Isidoros Makrides, and
Giorgos Lillikas.
The main issue of the session is the "Development of structures,
institutions and prospects of the OSCE".
During the three general committees of the session, as well as the
plenary session, discussions will be held on the current institutional
situation in the Organisation and the possibilities of further improving it,
in order to strengthen the trustworthiness and efficiency of the OSCE.
Special emphasis will be given to monitoring and maintaining faithful
compliance of the participating states to the principles and obligations of
the Organisation.
During the session, elections will be held for the presidency of the
Assembly, and the replacement of a number of Vice-Presidents, whose terms
end.

[03] Spanish university acquires new centre
Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- Spain's Granada University has acquired a Centre
for Byzantine, Modern Greek and Cypriot Studies.
The founding act was signed yesterday at the Granada University.
The Centre will operate as from the next academic year.

[04] Defence Minister to visit Russia
Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- Defence Minister, Yiannakis Omirou, starts tomorrow
a four-day visit to Russia for talks with his Russian counterpart Igor
Sergeyev.
Omirou, who announced the visit today at a press conference, said he
will discuss issues of mutual interest in the light of an existing
agreement for military and technical cooperation between the two countries,
dating to 1996.
Asked to comment on reports that Greek Minister of Defence Akis
Tsohatzopoulos will visit Cyprus soon, Omirou said "there are prospects for
such a visit", but this depends on Tsohatzopoulos' schedule.
Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides will also visit Moscow from 11-14
July 1998, at the invitation of Moscow Mayor Yuri Ruskov as guest of honour
at the World Youth Games, to take place in the Russian capital.
During his stay in Moscow President Clerides will meet Russian
President Boris Yeltsin.
The Cyprus government has ordered the Russian-made S-300 surface-to-air
missile system in 1997 in a bid to boost its air defence. Turkey has
threatened to take "necessary measures" if the system is deployed.
Asked whether Clerides' and Omirou's visits to Russia may be related to
the purchase of the missiles and thus lead to tension, Government Spokesman
Christos Stylianides said it was clear the government does not intend to
create tension itself.
The spokesman pointed out President Clerides will visit Moscow at the
invitation of the city mayor, while Omirou's visit is related to a
cooperation agreement. Turkish troops have been occupying 37 per cent of
Cyprus territory since 1974, in violation of repeated UN resolutions
calling for their withdrawal.

[05] Security Council appeals for direct talks
Nicosia, Jul 6 (CNA) -- The UN Security Council has called for the
resumption of talks between the leaders of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot
communities as soon as possible, according to the German News Agency (DPA).
The appeal was made in New York after the 15-member Council was briefed
by UN special advisor for Cyprus, Diego Cordovez, on his recent meetings
with President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.
Russian Ambassador to the UN, and current president of the Council,
Sergei Lavrov, told reporters the body "calls for the resumption, as soon
as possible, of the face-to-face talks between the two leaders."
Lavrov said Cordovez basically "touched base" with the two sides in
Cyprus to explore prospects for the resumption of direct negotiations.
Cordovez told a press conference here on Saturday he will return to the
island in September to start a dialogue and appeared hopeful he can achieve
this goal.
Denktash said last December he would not go back to the negotiating
table until his self-styled illegal regime in the Turkish occupied north of
Cyprus is recognised by the international community and until Cyprus
withdraws its application for accession to the European Union.
