The fact that members of this soc.culture.greek bother to comment
about such garbage strikes me as another example of the decline of
Hellenic civilization. What criticism can be made of a film in which a
Hollywood prostitute plays the mother of Alexander, a talentless rent
boy plays Alexander and a concoction of other second rate actors try
to fill the gaps (Christopher Plummer as Aristotle is definitely worth
a laugh). The film is Lord of the Rings meets Ben Hur and the moral is
that Oliver Stone cannot conceive the ethos and culture of the period
(a lifetime of burgers and coke has compromised his mental faculties).
For him whether you talk about american soldiers in Iraq or the
greatest conqueror in human history its essentially the same: scandal,
sex and a lot of blood.
The only pertinent matter is: will the Hellenes be dupped to pay money
to Oliver and his cronies? This remains to be seen.
They gay bit has me worried though since I've heard about the lawyers and
the rest. I always thought it was best to leave a person's sexuality out of
it.

Hellenic civilization started its decline the second your alleged ancestors

The ethos and the culture of the period was such that homosexuality was not
at all uncommon. On the contrary!

Alexandros was not blonde

The Alexander Mosaic is a copy of an original mosaic completed around
300 B.C. The scene depicts Alexander the Great leading his troops in the
Battle of Issus (333 B.C.) against the Persian king, Darius. Composed of
minute stone and glass pieces, this mosaic is one of the largest and
most significant works of art that survives from antiquity. This
particular mosaic was found in the city of Pompeii in 1831, where it had
been submerged for centuries after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Most
of the left side of the work was destroyed in the event.

Why can't the Greeks themselves make blockbuster movies about their

I never said he was gay. As for the rest, what you say is false as in
that region most were still Greeks, heard of magna greacia? hence why
they revered someone like Alexander. I would rather trust that, than
your Hitler, Nordic blonde hair ideologies.
I find what an original copy of a painting at least 33 years after his
death to be far more credible than Claudius Aelianus who lived from c.
175 - c. 235
Various History— for the most part preserved only in an abridged form—
is Aelian's other well-known work, a miscellany of anecdotes and
biographical sketches, lists, pithy maxims, and descriptions of natural
wonders and strange local customs, in 14 books, with many surprises for
the cultural historian and the mythographer.
Also bear in mind that the mosaic I posted is thought to be based of a
copy from Apelles.

The Isus painting doesn't show him with "dark hair", at least by Greek
standards. More like a "medium/light brown", a shade that the ancient Greeks
would have probably classed as "xanthos". According to some experts, "xanthos"
denoted a tawny or dirty yellowish color and not a bleach blonde shade as seen
in Stone's Alexander, so the mosaic does not necessarily conflict with the
description given by Aelian. On a side note, Plutarch, in his biography of
Alexander, critisized a Greek artist for depicting him "darker than he was
naturally". Apparently, some Greek artists were ignorant of his pigmentation.
Perhaps the artist of the mosaic was also ignorant. But what about the
sarcophagus of Sidon? Wasn't Alexander depicted as bleach blond on that?
"death to be far more credible than Claudius Aelianus who lived from c.
175 - c. 235
"
His description of Alexander is in all likelihood based on earlier sources that
did not survive, quite possibly comtemporary accounts.

mospėlqim, dislike, from pėlqim, liking;
pa-: this prefix has the effect of changing a word's meaning to the
opposite (creates an antonym).
Examples:
i palarė, unwashed, from i larė, washed;
i pavlefshėm, invalid, from i vlefshėm, valid;
i pathemeltė, unfounded, from i themeltė;
Oh, nice. However, that still leaves us with the problem of you addressing
the following issues:
I trust the Macedonian image over the Roman 1, it's that simple. He just was
1 of the minority of Greeks with blonde hair. I see them almost every day in
Melbourne where they're less than 10% of the population.
Are you telling me Italians have a better image of Alexander than Greeks?
Also read Plutarch where he says that Roman mosaic makes him too dark and
swarthy as he was of ruddy and fair appearance - and 2,000 years before the
brunette Hitler and his brunette losers like Himmler and Goebels.
Blockbusters cost a couple of 100 million. You need an economy of scale to
do movies like this. Then you need people to pay to see it. Do you think
Americans would pay to see a Greek or other foreign movie? They want to see
some hunk like Pitt or Farrell rather than some unknown European. Still I
suppose Greeks could hire the likes of Pitt, Farrell etc. and do it.
May I suggest something less intellectually demanding for our confused
friends in the FYROM?

Probably nobody will ever know for sure what shade the color of his hair
exactly was. Maybe he treated his hair with some substance for some time,
and sometimes not. Also some folks' hair color changes when they grow up.
He may have looked different at different times.
Actually you could do it all with CGI. Look at Gladiator. Compared to The
Fall of The Roman Empire (which was exactly the same story) it was piss
because apart from the CGI everything was done in close up and indoors so
that it might as well have been filmed for TV. It cost the BBC peanuts to
film the docudrama Coliseum which was all CGI and ln the Footsteps of
Alexander the Great by Michael Wood also cost peanuts and unlike
Silversteins film was actually filmed on location. All you need to do is
film the background locations like they did for Walking With Dinosaurs and
then CGI in all the actors and extras. Should only cost about £6 million.

Are you illiterate??????
It is a roman COPY of a GREEK original Painting. A pianting thought to
be from either Philoxenus of Eretria of Appelles who were CONTEMPORARIES
of Alexander the Great. In fact the painting is in the Macedonian Style
similar to other Macedonian Painting found in tombs vases etc.. xupna!
> Also read Plutarch where he says that Roman mosaic makes him too dark and

Plutarch embellished things or changed the story, do the research and
see for yourself. I rather trust contemporaries that story tellers
hundrerds of years after the fact.
Plus if you read it and looked at the mosaic, even if you accepted it to
be true, Alexander is not holding a thunderbolt in the mosaic.
. . . Appelles, however, in painting him as wielder of the thunder-bolt,
did not reproduce his complexion, but made it too dark and swarthy.
Whereas he was of a fair colour, as they say, and his fairness passed
into ruddiness on his breast particularly, and in his face. Moreover,
that a very pleasant odour exhaled from his skin and that there was a
fragrance about his mouth and all his flesh, so that his garments were
filled with it.
Anyway. i believe Appelles and Philoxenus anyday over Plutarch. Read
what is said about Plutarch:
Plutarch was not an eyewitness to the events he recorded. Although he
was a prominent scholar and civil servant and traveled widely, he spent
most of his life in Chaeronea in central Greece. Further, his subjects
all lived 200 or more years before him. He had a wide variety of
sources, but conflicting evidence and an occaissional paucity of detail
gave him ample opportunities to dramatize or embellish his work.
In his "Lives", Plutarch pursued two major themes. One was the tenacity
of Rome in war. Despite military setbacks, Rome always stayed the course
and prevailed in the end. Whether it was Hannibal, Pyrrhus, gallic
tribes or whoever, Rome outlasted them. The second was Rome's political
genius and ability to compromise. In contrast to the Greeks, who always
fought among themselves and brought about their own downfall, Romans
managed to put aside their differences and stand together when necessary.

blonder as he grew older is ridiculous.

I believe the image in Pella, pure and simple. The Roman copy is in an
almost Byzantine stylised copy and if I were to believe the Byzantine
styles, I would think Greeks and Romans were southern Indians. There are
other images of Alexander with fair hair and why would Plutarch make an
issue of such a matter if it were not true. It's like watching a movie with
Hitler having blonde hair - it would seem peculiar as we all know he is a
brunette.
Ever heard of sun-bleaching??? Happens all the time. Brown can even go
blonde with enough of it.
I may consider it, Lord know they're in need of some dire help.
True. You could do it and they have with Spartacus (2004), with a Croatian
lead actor and some very nice British actors like Angus McFayden, BUT and
it's a big but, to capture the obese, "I
hate-myself-and-want-to-be-somebody-else" JewSA market, you need an actor
like Brad Pitt and they come with a price tag like $USD25 million. So your 6
million GBP now becomes about $USD40 million.
Anyway, since Michael Wood and others did similar things why bother? True,
Brad Pitt would have the sluts, that think of nothing but their fanny,
drooling, but are they of any consequence past age 30?

Bollywood has a lot to offer believe me. Better than a culture killer like
the JewSA.
> BTW have they even got Roxanne's skin colour and facial appearance right ?
Oh yeah. As far as I can remember, Roxanne looked just like that. Had her
photo somewhere.
It doesn't apply to my cousin. His hair is now black and there is more sun
in Cyprus than in Macedonia. The mosaics showing Alexander with light hair
show him when he was young. Sliverstein has got it all wrong because of his
Anglo-Saxon prejudice.
Forget Anglo-Saxon prejudice. They're mostly dark-haired anyway. Silverstein
sounds Jewish and Stone is half Jewish.
> BTW have they even got Roxanne's skin colour and facial appearance right ?
I don't know? Have they?
...he "was" a brunette...he's dead! ;-)
That was when he was younger. It was found in Phillips tomb.

So if you say it looks Byzantine then of course as Byzantines were Greek
anyway.
But their Alexander gained his "greatness" by conquerring other
peoples from Balkans all the way to India, invading their lands,
plundering their peoperties, enslaving and selling them in slave
markets, forcing them to work in slavery for nothing.
Does this really make a person great in the real sense of the word, or
a tyrant and a murderer????
In my opinion, he was a tyrant and a murder in today's moral values as
well as then. But in the infamous Greek Un-civilization, it is
different. One is considered in the Greek Un-Civilization more
valuable, accomplished well and a more distinguished Greek if one
conquers other peoples, invades their lands, plunders their
peoperties, enslaves and sells them in slave markets, force them to
work in slavery for nothing.
When somebody says the Greek Alexander the Tyrant was also a
homosexsual, Greeks get really pissed even though homosexsuality in
ancient Greece as well as in ancient Rome, was a national pass-time.
And today, homosexsuality is a perfectly good and normal choice of
life-style, the homosexsual people are supposed to be equal citizens
of any European country according to the constitution of EU.
Are Greeks using double standards: one standard is to get mad at the
people who says Alexander the Tyrant was a homosexual as if
homosexuality is something very bad, and the other standard, the
constitution of EU, which assumes homosexuality is a perfectly normal
life-style???/

Dear marko anger is a completely normal, usually sick, Turkish emotion.
But when it gets out of control(you feel like killing a few Kurds) and
turns destructive(burn a Kurdish village or two), it can lead to
problems—problems at work(you can't keep a job), in your personal
relationships(your male companion drops you for Raj Kaput), and in the
overall quality of your life(can't take a bath). And it can make you
feel as though you're at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful
Greek person.(Dorian West,Jason L.,etc.)
Poy, whare tid you lern to spehell lake tihs?
What is more titilating for you? That Alexander slept with boys? That
Clinton liked his secretary to suck his dick? There is no reason to
get upset, Hollywood is going to serve you that and more.
But if you want - for a moment - to forget what your dick tells you,
read books and listen to your head. You see Achilles loved Patroclos
but in a different way than Elton John loves his boyfriend. Please
understand that your world today has nothing in common with the world
of Alexander. In that world a leader did not send working class boys
to die for Halliburton; in that world a leader was someone who rode at
the front and dared losing his life for his cause. In that world
leaders died young.
Now put your thumb in your mouth and go to sleep. It all right; Oliver
Stone is gonna give you some gay sex...

How do Persians look like? I mean, how do you distinguish them from Greeks?
Persians are a white race of people and therefore can look blonde to
dark-swarthy. Which is it? I bet she's fair haired and that riles you, but
it shouldn't. Persians are Aryan = Iran.
See my previous post. From Greeks? Greeks are usually fairer of skin and
hair. Both are white Aryan races. The best way to distinguish them would be
skull and facial structure. Classic example is the Slav, a so called white
race with lots of blonde/blue people, but etched with Asiatic Mongoloid
features like high-cheekbones, triangle-head and a penguin gait.

It was a Greek team of monkeys, wasn't it? It's ridiculous really. Why would
I weep?
BTW: that still leaves us with the problem of distinguishing Greek monkeys
from Aryans. No, wait, we got that beat: Persians have fair hair and
complexion, Greeks have dark ones. Case closed.

No need. I know how. Persians don't look like monkeys.
What a putrid waste of a puny penis you are! You should face legal
action for your attempt to impersonate a man, you ridiculous little
mascara face-painted Monkey-In-The-Box. It's easy to tell why you are
celibate, you cantankerous, foul-tempered, self-loathing nonentity
Not that skin colour or 'race' are in any way determining factors in matters
such as humanity, decency and so on.
Only unintelligent and illogical racists believe otherwise - and
unscientific belief it is.
Henry.
They've made her look African American from what I've heard.
Listen to Doreen, he's a trainee hairdresser !

Mate! You are weeping and seething or else you wouldn't be here in these
Greek NGs. Now a word of advice, don't be so jealous of your superiors in
every way, the long term affects may lead to development of cancer and we
wouldn't want you to burden the medical infrastructure of whatever 3rd world
hell-hole you live in. Case is still very much open.

Oh shit!!! Now that's ridiculous and an insult to the intelligence of

or Asia?

OK. Which is it then, chimps or gorillas?
Oh, but we are. We kicked your arse yet again. You had to abandon your
precious Grease and go all the way to Australia because of us.
That's what Dorian West believes. I don't know about "Iztok" (I don't think
I've read his posts), but whenever I have attempted a meaningful discussion
with Dorian West about anti-Semitism and racism he just mutters a few
puerile attempts at insults and then runs away. He just doesn't have any
argument to support his hatred of people because of the colour of their
skin.
Dorian West is thus typical of unintelligent racists everywhere.
Henry.
You think IZTOK sounds like a real name, good thing you don't live in
the US.The immigration will send you packing back to Moldava, where they
keep all the slavic freaks.
IZTOK- that sounds like it was created by a cheap crashed
computer.WTF is an IZTOK-is it real or artificial?
Dear Harry you missed IZTOK's post where he calls Greek people monkeys-
how conveniet of you.
That's not an issue here. The issue is that Greeks had their arses kicked so
badly that they landed in Australia.
I'm sure I've missed many similar provocative utterances by the likes of
Seanie (in one of his many guises), mark rivers et al.
And you are right: it is very convenient not to bother to read every one of
these moronic comments by these morons. To read them all - and worse: to
respond to them - is not just a waste of time, it also gives credence to
their flaming attacks.
As we know, Seanie wants a reaction to his regular diatribe. Any reaction.
Anything that can further lower the tone here, that can paint his opponents
as crude and unimaginative hoodlums is grist to his anti-Greek propaganda.
Hence neither gogu not I rise to his bait very often. He cannot be flamed
away from here, he is 'winning' by his own impoverished standards because he
keeps attracting all this attention: attention is his one and only aim. And
he is still succeeding, not least thanks to the help and assistance in
drawing attention to himself that amongst others you provide, Jason.
Henry.
I am Australian moron. Does it bother you that I saw the light and recognise
you slant-eyed things for what you are - a danger to Europe, Australia and
the whole white world???
Tell me something I don't know.
> Does it bother you that I saw the light and recognise you slant-eyed

You call Australia "white world"?
Dorian West likes to boast of his "superior intellect".
Was this yet another brilliant example of this phenomenon?
Henry.
