The fact that members of this soc.culture.greek bother to comment
about such garbage strikes me as another example of the decline of
Hellenic civilization. What criticism can be made of a film in which a
Hollywood prostitute plays the mother of Alexander, a talentless rent
boy plays Alexander and a concoction of other second rate actors try
to fill the gaps (Christopher Plummer as Aristotle is definitely worth
a laugh). The film is Lord of the Rings meets Ben Hur and the moral is
that Oliver Stone cannot conceive the ethos and culture of the period
(a lifetime of burgers and coke has compromised his mental faculties).
For him whether you talk about american soldiers in Iraq or the
greatest conqueror in human history its essentially the same: scandal,
sex and a lot of blood.
The only pertinent matter is: will the Hellenes be dupped to pay money
to Oliver and his cronies? This remains to be seen.

most of them are Celtic-Iberians and therefore racially, very close to
Greeks.

I never said he was gay. As for the rest, what you say is false as in
that region most were still Greeks, heard of magna greacia? hence why
they revered someone like Alexander. I would rather trust that, than

death to be far more credible than Claudius Aelianus who lived from c.
175 - c. 235

The Isus painting doesn't show him with "dark hair", at least by Greek
standards. More like a "medium/light brown", a shade that the ancient Greeks
would have probably classed as "xanthos". According to some experts, "xanthos"
denoted a tawny or dirty yellowish color and not a bleach blonde shade as seen
in Stone's Alexander, so the mosaic does not necessarily conflict with the
description given by Aelian. On a side note, Plutarch, in his biography of
Alexander, critisized a Greek artist for depicting him "darker than he was
naturally". Apparently, some Greek artists were ignorant of his pigmentation.
Perhaps the artist of the mosaic was also ignorant. But what about the
sarcophagus of Sidon? Wasn't Alexander depicted as bleach blond on that?

I trust the Macedonian image over the Roman 1, it's that simple. He just was
1 of the minority of Greeks with blonde hair. I see them almost every day in
Melbourne where they're less than 10% of the population.
Are you telling me Italians have a better image of Alexander than Greeks?
Also read Plutarch where he says that Roman mosaic makes him too dark and
swarthy as he was of ruddy and fair appearance - and 2,000 years before the
brunette Hitler and his brunette losers like Himmler and Goebels.

Probably nobody will ever know for sure what shade the color of his hair
exactly was. Maybe he treated his hair with some substance for some time,
and sometimes not. Also some folks' hair color changes when they grow up.
He may have looked different at different times.

Actually you could do it all with CGI. Look at Gladiator. Compared to The
Fall of The Roman Empire (which was exactly the same story) it was piss
because apart from the CGI everything was done in close up and indoors so
that it might as well have been filmed for TV. It cost the BBC peanuts to
film the docudrama Coliseum which was all CGI and ln the Footsteps of
Alexander the Great by Michael Wood also cost peanuts and unlike
Silversteins film was actually filmed on location. All you need to do is
film the background locations like they did for Walking With Dinosaurs and
then CGI in all the actors and extras. Should only cost about £6 million.

It is a roman COPY of a GREEK original Painting. A pianting thought to
be from either Philoxenus of Eretria of Appelles who were CONTEMPORARIES
of Alexander the Great. In fact the painting is in the Macedonian Style
similar to other Macedonian Painting found in tombs vases etc.. xupna!

Plutarch embellished things or changed the story, do the research and
see for yourself. I rather trust contemporaries that story tellers
hundrerds of years after the fact.

be true, Alexander is not holding a thunderbolt in the mosaic.

Whereas he was of a fair colour, as they say, and his fairness passed
into ruddiness on his breast particularly, and in his face. Moreover,

Anyway. i believe Appelles and Philoxenus anyday over Plutarch. Read
what is said about Plutarch:
Plutarch was not an eyewitness to the events he recorded. Although he
was a prominent scholar and civil servant and traveled widely, he spent
most of his life in Chaeronea in central Greece. Further, his subjects
all lived 200 or more years before him. He had a wide variety of
sources, but conflicting evidence and an occaissional paucity of detail
gave him ample opportunities to dramatize or embellish his work.
In his "Lives", Plutarch pursued two major themes. One was the tenacity
of Rome in war. Despite military setbacks, Rome always stayed the course
and prevailed in the end. Whether it was Hannibal, Pyrrhus, gallic
tribes or whoever, Rome outlasted them. The second was Rome's political
genius and ability to compromise. In contrast to the Greeks, who always
fought among themselves and brought about their own downfall, Romans
managed to put aside their differences and stand together when necessary.

styles, I would think Greeks and Romans were southern Indians. There are

It is a roman COPY of a GREEK original Painting. A painting thought to
be from either Philoxenus of Eretria or Appelles who were CONTEMPORARIES
of Alexander the Great. In fact the painting is in the Macedonian Style
similar to other Macedonian Painting found in tombs vases etc..
