Silberminen-Metropole die bedeutendste Stadt zwischen Denver und San
Francisco. Heute leben ihre nurmehr knapp 500 Einwohner von den Touristen, die
Amerika einmal wie vor hundert Jahren erle
ben wollen. Anschliessend geht es zur Ponderosa-Ranch, dem ehemaligen Drehort
von "Bonanza", und dann weiter zum "Goldland" bei Sacramento, California und
das amerikanische Weinbaugebiet im Napa-Tal. In San Francisco am Pazifik endet
die Reise von "coast
zu coast".

Dur op. 73 von Johannes Brahms.

Im Dezember 1993 wurden im deutschen Ruhrgebiet auf der Steinkohlezeche
Nordstern die letzten Vorkehrungen fuer die Schliessung getroffen und der 1000
Meter tiefe Einfahrtsschacht mit Erde verfuellt. Die Schliessung der Zeche
folgt einem allgemeinen Nied
ergang des deutschen Steinkohlebergbaus, der bereits vor 30 Jahren begann.
Preiswerte Importkohle und Erdoel haben die deutsche Steinkohle immer weiter
vom Markt verdraengt. Von ehemals 140 Zechen, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg
foerderten, sind heute nur
noch 13 Schachtanlagen in Betrieb.

with it every morning, but he is also indirectly responsible for the company's

city in 1794, the home of the company's founder Wilhelm Muehlens was given the
number 4711. In 1807, the company boss used the number in his advertisements t
o distinguish his
product from those of the other cologne-makers in town. A household name, or
rather number, was born.

Durchquerung des gefaehrlichsten Seewegs der Welt. Als solcher gilt die Strass
e von Malakka. 1991 registrierte das International Maritime Bureau (IMB) in
London 203 Piratenueb
erfaelle, d.h. statistisch etwa alle eineinhalb Tage einen. Singapur, Malaysia
und Indonesien wollen enger als bisher kooperieren, um der steigenden Zahl der
Piratenueberfaelle Herr zu werden.

development site. Reinhard Schneider's film shows the former testing area on
the island of Usedom and listens to the tales of former employees of the Army
Proving Grounds.

own language and many of their traditions, but they are financially dependant

so they always return home to their village communities, becoming commuters

"On March 4, 1959, an airplane crashed for reasons unknown while attempting to
land in the Dresden area. All of the crew members lost their lives..."
This report appeared in the March 5, 1959 edition of the East German newspaper
"Neues Deutschland". The aircraft referred to was an experimental prototype
called the B 152. This turbo-jet plane was manufactured by the fledgling
aircraft industries of E
ast Germany in Dresden-Klotzsche. For East Germany's aircraft production the
crash meant the end of the line. Development was discontinued.
Technicians, researchers, engineers, and politicians who were involved in the
development of the GDR's airline industry give information on the background
and goals behind this ambitious billion-mark program.

Das, was der TueV fuer Autos ist, ist der Germanische Lloyd fuer Schiffe - ein
e technische ueberwachungsorganisation, die dazu beitraegt, die Sicherheit der
Schiffe auf See zu ueberwachen, zu erhalten und, wo es moeglich ist, zu
verbessern. Neben gut 500
0 deutschen See- und Binnenschiffen betreut der Germanische Lloyd ca. 1000
Schiffe auslaendischer Reeder. In einer Zeit, in der schwere Schiffsunfaelle,
insbesondere Tankerunfaelle, sich haeufen, gewinnt die ueberwachungsarbeit an
Bedeutung. Zusammen mit
anderen grossen Klassifikationsgesellschaften im Ausland kaempft der Germanisch
e Lloyd fuer einen einheitlichen Sicherheitsstandard aller Schiffe auf den
Weltmeeren.

The history of the Ju-52 plane begins in Dessau, about 100 kilometers south of
Berlin. In 1929, the Junkers factories began the construction of this
single-engine aircraft which was originally designed to be a cargo plane. The
first Ju-52 was introduced
to the public at Berlin's Tempelhof Airport in February, 1931. Just one year
later, the German Lufthansa received its own custom-made triple-engine Ju-52,
and by 1937, Lufthansa's fleet had grown to include 110 of them. But its
triumph is no cause for gl
orious memories: it was used as a fighter plane for the first time during the
Spanish Civil War, and during World War II, 552 of them were prepared for the
attack on Poland. Hitler even had his own Ju-52, which they called the
"Fuehrer's plane", bearing the number D-2600.

The airplanes developed by Willy Messerschmitt (1898-1978) all share the same
distinctive hallmarks: minimal air resistance, and light-weight, simple
construction. In the 1930s, Messerschmitt outbid other aircraft manufacturers
like Heinkel, to land the
contract to build the German Air Force's standard fighter plane. And so
Messerschmitt's Me 109 achieved a tragic fame as the most-built aircraft in
World War Two. After the war, Messerschmitt designed houses, cars and, from
1952 until his death, was once
again developing airplanes. The broad production spectrum of Mes-
serschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm Inc. - founded in 1969 - offered Messerschmitt the
opportunity to turn his new ideas into reality.

Our camera team braved the flight in the Beech-18 over the Atlantic from
Chicago via Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and on to its final
destination, Hartenholm, Germany.

A few months ago the Schifelbeins, a family of German descent, emigrated from
northern Kazakhstan to Germany. Three generations of this extended family are
now trying to put down roots in Potsdam, near Berlin. The Schifelbeins share
a common fate with
many of their countrymen: deported during the war, sent on forced labor details
,
to internment camps and then beginning anew in faraway Kazakhstan. Isolated
and rootless in the former Soviet Union, the family is now isolated here in
Germany as well.
Centering the Schifelbeins as an example, our report probes the alienation of
this group of people who for decades have been in search of their national
roots and identitity.

Der deutsche Universitaetsprofessor Rainer Schoewerling entdeckte 1983 durch
Zufall die wohl bedeutendste und umfassendste historische Privatbibliothek
Deutschlands: das in Nordrhein-Westfalen gelegene Schloss Corvey.
Reisebeschreibungen und Biographien,
Magazine und Memoiren, Dramen und Lyrik, vor allem aber ein reicher Bestand an
Unterhaltungsliteratur des 18. und fruehen 19. Jahrhunderts machen diese
Bibliothek zu einem Denkmal europaeischer Buchkultur. Eine Arbeitsgruppe von
Germanisten hat mit der w
issenschaftlichen Erschliessung der Bibliothek begonnen.

ears earlier, the western power was their capitalistic arch-enemy, against whom
they were to defend their socialist values at all costs. Before being accepte
d into the western ranks, their understanding of democracy and even their level
of professional skill was called into question.
Our film examines the difficulties involved in integrating personnel of
conflicting ideological convictions. Three successfully "integrated" officers
report on their experiences then and now.

Staatsbuergerschaft, d
a sie - ganz unter dem Eindruck des Kalten Krieges - seine politische Bindung

in the last few years. Coal mining is concentrated in the north, the iron and
steel industry is reorganizing its production, and high-tech industries are
moving in. It is preci
sely this transformation which is opening space for new ideas and visions such
as Emscher Park, the brainchild of the "International Building Exhibition
Emscher Park", IBE for short.

- hier begann aber auch der grosse Freiheitskampf Osteuropas mit den Streiks
auf der ehemaligen Leninwerft.

The town founded under the name "Stalin City" - after 1961 it was renamed
"Eisenhuettenstadt" (Iron Foundry City) - was an integral part of the Communis

h were applied. Instead of churches and department stores, it was the factory
which achieved pre-eminence. Since German unification, the dismantling of the
foundry has led not only to a loss of jobs, it has also resulted in a loss of

r many people has given rise to a yearning for the past. Eisenhuettenstadt is a
film which realistically captures the nature of society in the former GDR and
the frustrated hopes associated with it.

Eisenhuettenstadt
The town founded under the name "Stalin City" - after 1961 it was renamed
"Eisenhuettenstadt" (Iron Foundry City) - was an integral part of the Communis
t
Party programme. This was true of both the building work itself and the
architectural concepts whic
h were applied. Instead of churches and department stores, it was the factory
which achieved pre-eminence. Since German unification, the dismantling of the
foundry has led not only to a loss of jobs, it has also resulted in a loss of
orientation which fo
r many people has given rise to a yearning for the past. Eisenhuettenstadt is a
film which realistically captures the nature of society in the former GDR and
the frustrated hopes associated with it.

los soldados alemanes
ca!dos en combate. Las tumbas de estos #ltimos pasan inadvertidas, mientras qu
e
varios monumentos recuerdan el hero!smo de los primeros. Los habitantes de
Oderbruch, bajo la direcci"n del PSUA (Partido Socialista Unificado de
Alemania), lograron suprimir
partes de la historia, entre ellas los falsos ideales del nacionalsocia lismo,
con los que, convertidos ya en ciudadanos de la RDA, pensaban que no ten!an
nada que ver. Pero el presente transforma siempre la historia al ponerla bajo
otro prisma, pues es
precisamente ahora, con la desaparici"n de la RDA, que la gente de Oderbruch
tiene la posibilidad de enfrentarse a su pasado nacionalsocialista.

erreicht ist, wird man wieder von vorne anfangen muessen - eine Sisyphusarbeit
im wahrsten Sinne des
Wortes.

In 1934 it was decided to name Germany's major highways and assign them
numbers. The road connecting the German city of Eydtkuhnen on the river Memel,
in the eastern part of the German empire, with the imperial city of Aachen on
the German-Belgian-Dutch
border in the west became "Reichsstrasse 1," or Imperial Highway 1. Anyone who
travels along this road today crosses both the Russian-Polish border and the
Polish German border. Probably no other road in Europe provides evidence of th
e
aftermath of the Se
cond World War and the Cold War as well as this one. Relevant photos and
archival material document the history of this artery and the changes which
have taken place alongside the road.

02:30 Feature: Georg Grosz - His Colours Were Black, White and Red

Artist George Grosz (1893-1959) grew up under the militantly nationalistic
reign of Wilhelm II in Germany. The bitter experience of WW I brought his
Prussian patriotism and his fervent jingoism to an abrupt end. His paintings
and graphics became politica
l: he joined the Dada movement, postulated radical art theories and lashed out
fiercely at the social conditions of the 1920's with his scathing caricatures.
In 1925, Grosz wrote about his works, which were part of the "veristic" art
movement: "The Verist
shoves his contemporaries' faces into the mirror. I drew and painted out of
protest and through my art I tried to convince the world that it is ugly, sick
and hypocritical." The program portrays a contradictory artist, who really
would have preferred to
have been an aristocrat, a cosmopolitan, a revolutionary - and most of all, an
American.

children. The pupils here learn to function with their disability. Initially

they build confidence in elementary exercises at school, in their homes and on

their training goes beyond the basics. Thirteen-year-old Svena was born blind
and has an orange belt in Judo -- and she's no exception among the pupils at
the Carl Strehl School. None of these kids want to be outsiders. A Deutsche

Alltags und von Perspektivlosigkeit gepraegt ist. Wie die meisten Menschen in

Der Film stellt Frauen vor, die viele Jahre unschuldig in Gefaengnissen
verbracht haben - Frauen wie z.B. die Journalistin Jutta Giersch, die 1949 auf
offener Strasse verschleppt und eingesperrt wurde.

anualmente a decenas de miles de brasile$os.

Por ejemplo, el software necesario, un programa de dibujo, datos de orientaci"

y gran cantidad de informaci"n son suficientes para que el ordenador simule un

Roland Garve, Jahrgang 1955, heute erfolgreicher Zahnarzt in Lueneburg, hat es
geschafft.
Aufgewachsen ist er in der DDR, doch hier stiess sein Wunsch, Ethnologe zu
werden, sehr bald auf sehr reale Grenzen.
Ein Fluchtversuch brachte ihm 20 Monate Zuchthaus ein.
Seit seiner uebersiedlung in die Bundesrepublik 1984 hat Garve seine Traeume
verwirklicht. Er unternahm 15 Expeditionen zu den wenigen noch lebenden
Naturvoelkern, u.a. nach Venezuela, Kamerun, Brasilien und Thailand. Bei seine
r
letzten Expedition zu den
Hoehlenmenschen des philippinischen Regenwaldes entstand Filmmaterial von
Seltenheitswert.

Rumaenien und Russland. Wie eine offene Wunde zieht sich die Grenze durch das
Land: auf der einen Seite Rum
aenien, auf der anderen die Republik Moldawien, die bis vor ein paar Jahren zum
Sowjetreich gehoerte und nun unabhaengig ist.
Jahrzehntelang war diese Trennlinie eine Art 'Eiserner Vorhang'. Die Menschen
beiderseits der Grenze konnten nicht zueinander kommen. Und dennoch fanden sie
einen Weg, sich nahe zu sein: Die Frauen sangen ueber den Grenzfluss hinweg
Lieder, deren Texte v
om Leben und Leiden erzaehlten. Von diesen Frauen und ihren Liedern berichtet

In Israel wurde Oskar Schindler (1908-1974) nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als
"Gerechter aus den Voelkern" hoch geehrt, in den USA wurden Strassen nach ihm
benannt, in Deutschland blieb er weitgehend unbeachtet. 1939 hatte der
Sudetendeutsche eine bankrotte
Emailfabrik in Krakau aufgekauft und dort ueber tausend Juden aus dem Krakauer
Getto und dem KZ Plaszow beschaeftigt. Mit seinen Beziehungen und mittels
Bestechungen von NS-Wuerdentraegern verhinderte er, dass seine Arbeiter
deportiert und ermordet wurde
n. Dabei setzte er wiederholt sein Vermoegen und sein Leben aufs Spiel. Der Fil
m
zeichnet mit Hilfe von ehemaligen Fabrikarbeitern, Freunden und Bekannten ein
Portraet des Unternehmers, der ob seiner Neigung zu schoenen Frauen und
alkoholischen Getraenken
als Bonvivant galt.

The latest government reports on the destruction of Germany's forests contain
some alarming statistics: less than 1/3 of the forest is healthy and more than
a quarter of the trees are diseased or already dead. These casualty figures
are increasing at an
overall average of two percent a year, and in the case of the beech forests,
ten percent.
The causes behind the death of the forests are known: nitric oxides from
exhaust fumes, and agricultural overfertilization are to blame. What is being
done about it? More research. Over 800 studies went into the federal
government's "Report on the cause
s of forest destruction", at a cost of 360 million marks. What practical steps
were taken? Virtually none.

In Germany, military service is mandatory. Every able-bodied citizen is
obligated to defend his country, even at the possible cost of his own life.
The plausibility of the general mandate, idealistically defined as the
democratic responsibility of each
citizen to guard the freedom and peace of the land, has recently come under
crossfire. Now that the east-west conflict has faded, there are no real
enemies left outside of German borders. And since the ranks have been reduced
,
only around fifty percent
of those eligible each year are actually called into the barracks. The result
is that even the constitutional definition of eligibility is no longer
realistic. But the alternative idea of a career military is also being
criticized. German security is
undergoing a change of strategy.

n. Die Ermordung des Pazifisten gab den Anstoss zur Ausrufung der bayerischen
Raeterepublik. Als Sauerbruch die Revolutionsregierung als "Sauregierung"
beschimpfte, wurde er von einem Revolutionsgericht zum Tode verurteilt und
entging nur knapp der Hinric
htung. Waehrend der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus konnte Sauerbruch unbehelligt
arbeiten. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war er im Berliner Magistrat kurze Zeit
politisch taetig.

The "Gorch Fock" is the official sailing vessel the Federal Navy trains on.

prestigious symbol for the federal forces. An official marine document states
that "on no other ship of the German fleet is military service tougher than in

"Internationalen aerzte fuer die Verhuetung des Atomkrieges" (IPPNW) in
Zusammenarbeit mit den Berliner Festwochen ein Benefizkonzert in der Berliner
Waldbuehne, das Deutsche W
elle tv direkt uebertraegt. Die Organisation, die 1985 den Friedensnobelpreis
erhielt, versteht die Veranstaltung als "Friedenskonzert zur Erinnerung an die
Opfer des Zweiten Weltkrieges".
Auf dem Programm steht das Requiem von Guiseppe Verdi. ueber dreihundert
herausragende Musiker aus renommierten Ensembles der ganzen Welt bilden
Orchester, Chor und Solisten. Die Leitung hat der britische Dirigent Rudolf
Barschai.
Das Konzert in Berlin ist der Auftakt einer Tournee, die in Paris und Moskau
fortgesetzt wird und deren Erloes der UNO- Fluechtlingshilfe zugute kommt.

Frieda Albertine Knef's career took off in Germany with a scandal. In Willy
Forst's film "The Sins of a Woman", audiences caught an unadulterated glimpse

gh to offend the prudish eyes of the 1950's.
Born in Ulm in 1925, she went on to act in 50 films and began a second career
as chanson singer in 1963. 7 years later, her autobiography was published and
created a sensation.

Zu ihrem letzten Konzert vor der Sommerpause ziehen die Berliner Philharmonike

das sonst nur selten in klassische Konzerte geht. In diesem Jahr ist das
musikalische Leitthema d
ie oesterreichisch-ungarische Donaumonarchie. Unter der Leitung des russischen
Dirigenten Maaris Jansons erklingen in der "Nacht der Donaumelodien und des
Walzertaktes" Werke von Franz von Supp , Bedrich Smetana, Richard Strauss und
Franz Liszt.
Die Waldbuehne in Berlin ist eine der reizvollsten Freilichtbuehnen des
Kontinents. Im Sommer ziehen die Berliner mit Picknick-Koerben, Kissen, Decken
und manchmal auch mit Regenschirmen in die Arena neben dem Olympiastadion. Wer
einmal erlebt hat, wenn
20.000 Zuschauer zum Sonnenuntergang ihre Wunderkerzen anzuenden, wird dieses

Chemnitz is Saxony's oldest manufacturing town. It was the centre of the
textile industry, of locomotive and machine-tool construction, and the
automobile industry. In short, Chemnitz was the most important industrial city

n the GDR. As a consequence of economic policy after unification, the majority
of jobs in these industries were wound up on grounds of unprofitability. Since
a large part of the working population is no longer allowed to contribute to
the gross national p
roduct, they are now turning their attention to the glorious past. For lack of
anything better to do, they are transforming the town into an industrial
museum, a project which readily suggested itself in view of the old industrial
architecture and the man
y industrial products that are of historical interest. A grim report on the way
things are against a beautiful but unwholesome background.

Prohibited Zone #1 is a 30,000 hectare area in the Namibian desert. Huge
diamond finds lie near Oranjemund, just north of the Oranje River. Some 5,000
people work here. Running the mine costs nearly a million marks a day. Work
continues around the clock.
Thirty tons of rock have to be pulled apart, shaken and washed to extract just
one carat of diamonds. Although the mine is well-guarded, experts estimate tha
t
about 10% of production in Oranjemund is smuggled out illegally. Favorite
hiding spots include
shoe heels, stomachs and intestines.

The Meerfelder Bruch in Muensterland, Westphalia was once untamed marshland.
Today it's what we call "cultivated landscape" - not really a place for wild
animals. Still, the de Croys, the ducal family that owns the land, established
a wildlife preserve o
n 300 hectares back in 1840. Willows and bogs, clumps of birch trees and a
timber forest create an ideal refuge for rare animals. Like wild horses, some
330 of which live here. The animals are left completely to themselves: no
veterinarian ever sets foot
on this land, and stalls are nowhere to be found. "The Duke's Herd" - a feature
about horses and that breath of freedom so seldom found in Germany.

play a part in it. Not only did he generously annoint his head and shoulders
with it every morning, but he is also indirectly responsible for the company's
moniker when the f
ield marshall ordered his soldiers to establish a postal system in the occupied
city in 1794, the home of the company's founder Wilhelm Muehlens was given the
number 4711. In 1807, the company boss used the number in his advertisements t
o
distinguish his
product from those of the other cologne-makers in town. A household name, or
rather number, was born.

The town founded under the name "Stalin City" - after 1961 it was renamed
"Eisenh ttenstadt" (Iron Foundry City) - was an integral part of the Communist
Party programme. This was true of both the building work itself and the
architectural concepts which
were applied. Instead of churches and department stores, it was the factory
which achieved pre-eminence. Since German unification, the dismantling of the
foundry has led not only to a loss of jobs, it has also resulted in a loss of
orientation which for
many people has given rise to a yearning for the past. Eisenh tten stadt is a
film which realistically captures the nature of society in the former GDR and
the frustrated hopes associated with it.

Artist George Grosz (1893-1959) grew up under the militantly nationalistic
reign of Wilhelm II in Germany. The bitter experience of WW I brought his
Prussian patriotism and his fervent jingoism to an abrupt end. His paintings
and graphics became politica
l: he joined the Dada movement, postulated radical art theories and lashed out
fiercely at the social conditions of the 1920's with his scathing caricatures.
In 1925, Grosz wrote about his works, which were part of the "veristic" art
movement: "The Verist
shoves his contemporaries' faces into the mirror. I drew and painted out of
protest and through my art I tried to convince the world that it is ugly, sick
and hypocritical." The program portrays a contradictory artist, who really
would have preferred to
have been an aristocrat, a cosmopolitan, a revolutionary - and most of all, an
American.

tion. Oresteia is about the birth of a constitutional state following a bloody
struggle for power. Just as in ancient Greece, democracy in Russia is young,
and the confusion is great. But unlike events of the play, there is no divine
hand to intervene
here. Our report documents the final stages of rehearsal in Moscow in January
of 1994.

Service in Germany

In Germany, military service is mandatory. Every able-bodied citizen is
obligated to defend his country, even at the possible cost of his own life.
The plausibility of the general mandate, idealistically defined as the
democratic responsibility of each
citizen to guard the freedom and peace of the land, has recently come under
crossfire. Now that the east-west conflict has faded, there are no real
enemies left outside of German borders. And since the ranks have been reduced
,
only around fifty percent
of those eligible each year are actually called into the barracks. The result
is that even the constitutional definition of eligibility is no longer
realistic. But the alternative idea of a career military is also being
criticized. German security is
undergoing a change of strategy.
