TEHRAN (FNA)- German Chancellor Angela Merkel Thursday reaffirmed
support for direct talks between Tehran and Washington geared at
resolving the impasse over Iran's nuclear program.

Addressing parliament ahead of next week's G8 summit in Italy, Merkel
voiced "explicit support" for a direct dialogue between the US and
Iran.

She was quoted by the Islamic republic news agency as saying that her
country would back such talks.

Merkel pointed out that Iran's nuclear program would also be on the
agenda of the upcoming G8 summit.

US President Barack Obama pledged last month his country's readiness
to start a "serious dialogue" with Iran.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with Merkel in the eastern German
city of Dresden onJune 5, Obama urged Germany to help return Iran to
the negotiation table.

Bringing Iran to negotiating table "can't be done in isolation," but
needed the help of America's partners, such as Germany, the US leader
said.

Iran has repeatedly stated its nuclear program is solely for civilian
purposes.

Tehran has also made clear any military nuclear program would be in
clear violation of its Islamic teachings and laws.
