Using "Tabo" While Making "Ligo"

Question:
How many people still use "tabo" and "balde" (balde = pail, bucket, tabo
= a small ladle-like instrument used to transport water from a
pail/bucket to pour over body) while bathing?
Are you also first generation Filipino? Second generation Filipino?
Spouse of a Filipino? Non-Filipino?
I'm curious since my born-American cousins still use tabo and balde
(sometimes). Since I'm a showering kind of gal, I still occassionally
use tabo and balde when I'm at my mom's house in Los Angeles. Is this
question too personal?

I'll try to answer your question my way. At one time, plastic products
were unknown to Filipinos so the tabo and balde were the popular
showering utilities. Later on the oil refineries provided the raw
materials to make plastics and nowadays we have plastic ladles, which
don't sink to the bottom of the balde, and also plastic pails and large
capacity water containers.
What plastic cannot replace yet is the wonderful water cooler made out
of baked clay and a water spout. Despite the hot weather, this ingenious
device is porous enough to cool the water inside by evaporation through
the walls. A Filipino invention that you can be proud of.
If you really miss the 'good old days' just open up a can of fruit
cocktail, empty it and rush to the showers.

i keep two mickey mouse tabos in my bathroom. i use them to wash the
epot off my pu-et whenever i run out of ass wipe. it's a cool thing to
do once in a while hooohooohoohiiihiiihiihiiihii.

My wife still uses the tabo routinely. I did too when we lived in the RP but
rarely do now. Back to the ol' (hot water) shower.

I simply use the "wisik-wisik" method. A process whereby you dip your
fingers into a puddle of cold water and you stretch out your fingers in
front of your face a couple of times....
Works great when you're on the go! :)

Come on now, be honest. It's not the
use of the tried and true instruments of
bathing, it's the rush you get when you
pump that freezing cold well water into
the bucket and pour that first ladle full
over your head. THAT is what it is all
about!!!

How about using tabo after making "pupu"? Sorry (I'm hiding my face), I
can't help asking. A lot of people stil use this for that purpose, huh?

I only do this nowadays when I wake-up late (which is most of the time)
and don't have time for a complete shower. I use a small plastic cup by
the sink to wash and shampoo my "bedhead" hair, so I can style it and go
to work looking as pogi as can be. Sure. . .I may smell a little since
I didn't fully bathe, but at least my hair looks cool! ;)

A couple of summers ago I was in Jacksonville IL visiting Filipina friend of
mine and her son. Anyway I spent the night at the house of some of her
colleagues (it was a real flashback to the UAE, a party with Filipinos and a
visiting Arab). Anyway I woke up and went to the shower and noticed a tabo.
I'm thinking my my my, old habits die hard! Anyway I get into the shower and
lo & behold, the shower is sira! So I just took a bath instead.

Now that you mentioned it, I'm beginning to get the urge to try this
again (tabo and balde). What I liked about it was the RUSH I got
when pouring the WHOLE "balde" all over me. Even better when it's
cold!
Another "bathroom item" I remember using back in the Philippines
was a "bato" to get all that nasty scum all over your body :-)

I'm not sure about this 1st/2nd generation terms (sorry!) but I
came to the U.S. when I was only 11. I'm 31 now.

Well, it's not too personal for Filipinos who've been here since
they're young, I guess. I'm not sure about native Filipinos or
new immigrants, though...baka nakakahiya.

When I was in Japan two years ago, I WAS surprised they use tabo and balde!!
I stayed with my two Japanese friend's house, and it totally reminded me of
the "good ol' days" growing up in Manila. I mentioned to my friends that we
also use those "gadgets" and they were really surprised. Now, the questions
is, who "invented" the tabo and balde first--us, or them....

that trip to Japan), and I must be ashamed of myself for not longing to use
them. Among my friend here in Oregon, I don't recall at all any
conversation on that topic. I shld. bring it up during one of those "pinot

I don't think any one culture invented "tabo" & "balde" or equivalent
bathing tools. I mean, before the development of the shower, there
really weren't that many ways to bring water over your head and wash
yourself. Either you fully immerse yourself in water, or use some
cup-like thing to bring it over your head. Or wait for rain to come.
