USAID funds marine laboratory project in
Dumaguete

MANILA, Aug. 29 (PNA) -- The United States Agency for International
Development (USAID) has committed to provide a P31-million grant to
fund the construction of a new Marine Laboratory project of the
Siliman University in Dumaguete City.

The United States Embassy in Manila said in information bulletin that
the grant is in recognition of Siliman University's "vital support for
Coastal Resources Management (CRM) Initiative."

The Siliman laboratory project will cost a total of P60.7 million. The
university put up the balance of the amount to supplement the USAID
grant.

USAID-Philippines director Kenneth Schofield led earlier this week the
groundbreaking rites for the Siliman project, which will form part of
the Center of Excellence in coastal Resources Management project.

Schofield said the CRM project will use Siliman University's marine
biological and coastal expertise and enhance linkages throughout
central and Southern Philippines.

USAID said the Marine Laboratory Project will be used for coastal
resources management support activities such as research, training and
environmental communications. (PNA)
