U.S. citizens and legal residents, YOUR TAXES funded the following
"works of art:"

- A photo of a woman breastfeeding an infant, titled "Jesus Sucks."

- A photo of a newborn infant with its mouth open titled to suggest
the infant was available for oral sex.

- "Fuck a Fetus" poster showing an unborn baby with the caption: "For
all you folks who consider a fetus more valuable than a woman, have a
fetus cook for you, have a fetus affair, go to a fetus' house to ease
your sexual frustration."

- Performance of giant bloody tampons, satanic bunnies, three-foot
feces and vibrators.

- A novel depicting the sexual molestation of a group of 10 children
in a pedophile's garage, including acts of bestiality, with the
children commenting on how much they enjoyed the pedophilia.

- Crucified Christ submerged in a jar of urine.

- A female performer inserting a speculum into her vagina and
inviting audience members on stage to view her cervix with a
flashlight.

- A performance of large, sexually explicit props covered with Bibles
performing a wide variety of sex acts and concluding with a mass
Bible-burning. (canceled by the venue in response to citizen protests)

- A show titled "DEGENERATE WITH A CAPITAL D" featuring a display of
the remains of the artist's own aborted baby.

- A play titled "Sincerity Forever," depicting Christ using
obscenities and endorsing any and all types of sexual activities as
consistent with Biblical teaching.

- Essay describing then-New York Cardinal John O'Connor as a "fat
cannibal from that house of walking swastikas up on Fifth Avenue." Also
photographs of men performing oral sex, anal sex, oral-anal sex and
masturbation.

Why should their freedom of expression be paid for by taxpayers' money?

Unfortunately people have the wrong idea, the artists were sponsored to
study, and a grant is given for him/her/it to do so. Their one year
efforts were displayed, the committe that gives the grants have no idea
what the results would be.

Some turns out to be horrific, some are excellent. Some were just so-so,
over-all the artists is given a chance to sharpen their skills, some a
chance to experiment. Some to pursue something that they would not be
able to do without any help.

The grant also pays for the person who would help, like for example a
musician friend of mine got a year long to study with a famous jazz
artist, the grant paid a year's salary as an instructor to the master
and a year's pay for the student.
My friend is still not famous, but he was able to do that without
sacrificing his own ability to make money.

Is it worth it? After so many years and so much of the program having
graced our richness, you give examples that is so small in comparison to
that richness.

I can understand the thinking, most people ignore the arts, that is
fine, when the country is suffering the arts is the first to suffer
after all it would not put bread on your table.

Are we as a people suffering that much that we cannot afford art?

If I have a chance to take a year of my work, and devote it to my
art<without going bankrupt in the process> I would.

suppressed if taxpayer money were diverted away from artistic endeavors.

The one and only reason why you would call a person an artist is when
you cannot suppress his expression, an artist would make art even with
cow dung, or his own piss.

Only in idealistic countries where artists were really supressed since
an artist would express his feelings and vision no matter what form of
goevernment he lives in, I have seen it in my lifetime.

Example:
1. Western style musicians in PRC was arrested since they play music
that does not reflect China's own culture.
2. Rock and roll musicians in Cuba.
3. USSR banned paintings that does not pass the censors and their
opinions, that is the same in PRC.

Mao's own saying speaks against art that does not serve society. IMO if
the art looks good, it does serve society because that is all what art
is, but PRC officials made a policy that paintings like Diego Rivera
showing nationalism and the workers is the only accepted paintings style.

Our right wing in the US have expressed the very same idea and something
I could not believe, but then again, like I said before, in a circle
somewhere, opposing ideals meet.

Thanks,
My materials are, computers, silcon, and silicone<shall we say> and
whatever garbage I got in my backyard.
The goal of art is to look good, inspite of the material and subject. I
looked at the Maplethorpe photographs of homosexual acts, I thought that
the photography is excellent, technically and artistically... yes, I
agree that the subject matter is not for everyone, not for me as well.
One of those on your list.

One recipient of NEA was a teacher who teaches art to students from all
over the world, first generation immigrants from Asia and Africa. The
money the teacher received enabled the instructor to help the students
express the way religion is expressed in their countries.
The students did not get the money, the teacher did, that is that art
you detested in your view an insult to your religion. Another one on
your list.

So we will never forget, can you please rewrite your statement above by
dipping your finger in your own shit? If too thick, dilute with a
friend's piss. Of course you may use any or all walls of your house to
express such grand artistry. Thank you. BTW, you don't have to take
down that Sacred Heart hanging up there. Just write through it. And
don't forget, MAKE IT LOOK GOOD so it will serve society.

Let us also not forget that an artist does not always create something
with the intention that "it looks good". He could, intend to shock.
He could be expressing how horrible he feels. He could be expressing
something truly ugly.

I think you got it right when you said that an artist will make art no
matter what.

NEA exist to help artists who normally would be destitute.

You will notice, I got this offer from the pig even tho' my art has not
been seen yet, NEA also have this delima when they decide, altho' the
body of work they will see and make decisions on, the weight of their
decision depends upon the proposal and using that body of work as basis.

They have no idea what the result wold be in the end of the project,
sometimes it is literally the shit, or like Maplethorpe's x-rated, but
the agreement includes showing their pieces.

Caveat:
Continue but with certain restraints, of course this part I have to
agree on...
It has to be the kind that you can display to the majority of people,
they may not agree on it, but it has be displayable, Malethorpe's for
one is not one you would show your children.

Art is part appearance, part medium and part display. ANYTHING made of
or with shit and urine and aborted fetuses, however "beautifully"
packaged and presented, is STILL SHIT. I may stand in front of it, but
from ten miles away as pigs fly. Which is good, because if I come
closer I may contribute my spit to the objet d'art's innate beauty.

Precision spitting is an art form too. He-he.

Any artist who chooses to use shit, gore and urine as medium deserves to
starve. Maybe their mummified corpses can be used by other destitute
artists.

I do not equate perversion with artistry. Perverted works of art have
very limited audiences and should seek private sponsorships. My tax
money ought to be used for the benefit of the most number of people, be
they artist or audience, teacher or supplier, not just for those who
appreciate piss-n-shit art.

I agree with you on that one.

We should move away from pseudo artistic bull, and encourage those
graffiti artists into better areas to display their work.

Instead of declaring war, some communities provided spray paint and
masking tape to graffiti artists with the understanding that all
vertical surfaces except transparrent ones will be painted over and work
will be proudly signed and dated. The kids produced blocks of wonderful
murals that attracted tourists, art students, sociologists, the
Azmik-type bureaucrats and the media. Property values actually
skyrocketed and the graffiti-"victimized" communities experienced
revivals. Lots of kids got art scholarships to good schools, PROVIDED
they finished high school. Win-win situations that NEA should explore
and exploit.

Yes, they do that also. There is not enough money tho' and those that

I understand the concern, believe me, even the artist community is
reblling. But their solution is better than what a lot of people in
congress is giving the community.

just followed their inner voice which told them to paint, no matter what.
Some of their paintings are fascinating nonetheless.
