Preliminary Announcement and Call for Papers :

Workshop on the Use of Electronic Mail in the Philippines

Date: March 29-31, 1994
Venue: University of San Carlos, Talamban Campus
Organized by: College of Engineering, University of San Carlos,
Cebu City, Philippines

It is recognized that the number of email users is growing rapidly in the
Philippines but there still exist numerous potential users in academe,
industries, government and NGOs, who are either unaware or are unable to
gain access to existing email facilities.

The purpose of the Workshop is to gather providers, users, and potentail
users of email services to present and discuss the current status and
availability of email services and how they can be used for various purposes.
Focus will not be directed towards the technical details of how electronic
mail systems can be organized and operated. Rather, Workshop sessions will
discuss various issues related to the role of email in improving information
exchange and communication between academic and industrial communities,
how it can be integrated with the national plan to be a newly industrialized
nation by the year 2000, etc. Working groups will be formed to act on
identified problems in the use of email, to organize user groups and to assist
potential users to take full advantage of the benefits of email.

Opportunities will be made available for the demonstration of email systems
at the workshop venue.

CALL FOR PAPERS

Papers (30-45 mins) and short presentations (10-20 minutes) are welcome on
any topic related to the following subjects:

* Email services and other low cost email systems within the Philippines
* Descriptions on how email is used by specific interest groups
for health, environment protection, agriculture, forestry, management, etc.
* Email as an adjunct to education and training

Accomodations and Conference fee:
Details of available accomodation facilities will be announced later.
However there are many quality hotels close to the Talamban campus, and
on-campus facilities may also be available. It is expected that all participant
will cover their travel and living costs, and there will also be a nominal
conference fee.

Remark from organizers:
The above preliminary announcement is directed especially to potential
international attendees. It is recognized that if the Workshop is to be
successful, a significant number of attendees must be developed from within
the Philippines. That announcement will occur at a later date when
cosponsorship from other academic, industrial and governmental
organizations has been finalized. The programme and organization of the
Workshop will be further discussed by the organizing committee (to be
established) and thus will be refined and detailed.

Your response and indication of interest to participate is important to the
planning of this Workshop, and it will be helpful in advertising the
workshop within the Philippines. Please address all responses to:
