yeah and not for a good reason either.

at least i will be with some friends and especially from a long time ago.
Lester knew him a little and I am trying to get him to go to the memorial.
We'll see

I leave in a brief while and I feel sick.  I don't want to deal with this
but I have to.

Back to your questions about real estate.  My parents' neighbors had a tiny
two bedroom house.  It sold for about 280K about 2 years ago, still way too
much. Probably because she has no heirs maybe? and
so the real estate people are pricing it at a max? they thought it would
come down to like 220
eventually no doubt. but it didn't.  I don't know if it is accurate to say
real estate is doing bad.  the real estate boom isn't as much of a boom as
people still wish it
was, like 5 years ago. because people aren't having their sales prices
ratcheted up insanely every time they turn over a property.  I am not sure I
w0uld call that bad market so much as stable market.

More irony

Packing for the plane.  I remembered we have restrictions on carrying
cosmetics and the like.  So I had to repack everything.

I can't believe that this terrorist stuff has evolved into them taking away
my cosmetics.

Cracks me up.  America Freaks Out.

see you in a few days

This market is sort of 'in jeopardy', though ;)

Good flight & pleasant meetings (aside of the memorial)!

bizarre

this HAS to be a joke?

Visited with the mom of the fashion girl I sat for.
We recently found a picture of her in People Magazine, sitting right in back
of Scarlett Johannson at a fashion show.  Can't remember which.
I'm really tired and will write more tomorrow

In the meantime, I keep wearing my clothes inside out accidentally at least
once a week.
Right before I fell asleep last night I saw Avril Lavigne perform on
"Saturday Night Live".
She was pretty good, but the tune was a bit more simplistic than what I had
heard her do as a younger teenager, when I saw her live in Atlanta in the
Olympic Square.  And probably more imitative of Alanis Morrisette.
She's got a new CD coming out and describes her process for picking her band
members for this one.

Interesting!

in the meantime, is anyone in Europe following the Wolfowitz IMF scandal.
Wolfowitz, a Bush appointee, is in a bit of trouble with regard to promoting
his girlfriend and giving her emoluments.

The other thing in the news today -- this is late breaking so I have no
details.
Largest university campus massacre at Virginia Tech University which is just
near Roanoke.
The body count is rising, was at 20, now over 30.
There were apparently two sites where shooting took place today.  No one
knows what went on yet.  Although someone by name of Jamal Abarghouti
provided cell phone video of some of the incidents.  I just don't want to
find out that I know anyone that got hurt.  It's been so much bad news this
week alone.

"Photograph"

If you want it, you can have it
But you've got to learn to reach out there and grab it

'Cause everybody wants some love
Shooting from the stars above
And though my heart will break
There's more that I could take
I could never get enough

If you need it, you should show it
'Cause you might play so monastic that you blow it

'Cause everybody wants some hope
Something they can barely know
And though my heart will break
There's more that I could take
I could never let it go

It's in the photograph
It's in the photograph
It's in the photograph of love

'Cause everybody wants a dream
Something they can barely see
And though my heart will break
There's more that I could take
I could never let it be

It's in the photograph
It's in the photograph
It's in the photograph of love

Yes, as far as I'm concerned (presently in Europe), I followed that
'scandal` from the first day, it appeared recently in the
international media. But, what should I comment on? Perhaps: The GWB
era is soon over (in 1 year). May we hope, that perhaps the Democrats
(if they'd win) would do better... or so...

Yes, we (in Germany) watch this in every (media available) detail on
TV etc ...

Horrible sequences

a) the Columbine massacre
http://history1900s.about.com/od/famouscrimesscandals/a/columbine.htm

b) the Erfurt massacre (16 deaths by 1 guy)
http://www.spiegel.de/sptv/special/0,1518,245253,00.html

c) Virginia Tech massacre
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usguns/Story/0,,2058596,00.html

I do (sort of) believe that strange (or rather weird) 'Hollywood
Movies' and, in addition, 'Computer Games' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_game
are to be made rather responsible (respectively the providers of such
stuff!) for those damn massacres.

I've been following it in the Washington Post daily.  It's big news in DC.

I don't think there should be any barrier to comenting on how do most
Europeans perceive it?  As a breach of ethics?

It will be intersting to see what the "disturbing mail" is in in the note
that the shooter left.

It's also intersting to note that this VT event comes exactly 8 years on the
anniversary of Columbine.

Avril Lavigne is on TV right now performing "Girlfriend."

so far I have not heard that anyone I know perished, but the identities
aren't all confirmed.

My neighbors from Roanoke, house on the left-- her brothers were engineering
lecturers who had been lecturing at Norris Hall but had fortunately left on
Monday.  Every major network in the US was calling them -- Katie Couric and
just everyone.

I did want to mention the convocation they had today, as a memorial.

The final speaker was Nikki Giovanni, who is a famous US poet that I have
met in person as a result of living in Roanoke.
In the past, I have mentioned her on the net.

I don't know if any of you watched DefPoetry Jam again

If you did, (I know there are reruns so catch it if you can)

they featured Stacy Ann Chin from NY, Jo Harjo (I think I got that name
right)

AND!!!!

Reggie Gibson.

Reggie won the (I think correct me if I am wrong) 1998 Austin Slam with
the poem he was shown doing on DefJam.
The Jimi Hendrix poem.

If memory further serves, Reggie was also on a second place Berwyn
Illinois winning team at some point.

Another place you can catch Reggie....
Rent "The Love Jones" starring Cutey Larenz Tate

The Love Jones is Reggie's life story.  You will get to hear some of
Reggie's poetry in this piece.
And you will catch him in a few cameos throughout.

If you cannot figure out which one he is -- just ask.

I think it was NBC that has now created a montage of the Virginia Tech
memories and set it to Levigne's new song "keep Holding on".
I've attached the lyrics at the end of the post.

A convocation basically is a gathering of folks to commemorate something.
The Convocation for the deceased of the VT massacre was held on campus
yesterday.

They had several speakers, apparently one each for each religion or similar
membership.

Most poignant was the reading of Ecclesiastes in English and Hebrew by
representatives of the campus Hillel association.

Ironically, one of the victims was a holocaust survivor.  He died as a
hero, taking actions that allowed many students to escape.

life-trying-to-save-his-students/
The irony is that he died on National Holocaust day which I think is called
Rosh Hashoah.
President Bush commemorated him separately today.

>The final speaker was Nikki Giovanni, who is a famous US poet that I have

Nikki was the final speaker at the convocation, although she was not
selected to represent a religion, but all suffering generally.  She's an
english professor at Virginia Tech.  This will contain a link to her speech
at the convocation.

I had here, joined a thread of folks who were talking about amusing poetry.
The limerick is a humorous 5 line poem with a particular rhyming scheme,
aabba

it's not a limerick unless the last line is a humour punchline, a witticism

Although I hadn't a limerick to share, I did mention Nikki.

BET is the "Black Entertainment Channel", and Sears a retail department
store.

I thought it was cute that she was giving away a calendar in an
advertisement for a retail establishment.  Not something that is usually
associated with a serious poet.

However, it was apparently a Black History month promotion.

"Def Poetry Jam" is a show that was started by Def Poetry Hip Hop promoter
Russell Simmons.  You may recognize his name from his record labels and
also, the Phat clothing line that is even now quite popular.

This is a very timely discussion actually because he is now being indicted
for supporting use of terms and language that is offensive to African
Americans.  It will be interesting to see that debate evolve.

The show is quite good and is featured on HBO.  It's out on DVD now.  It's
certainly possible to see Nikki's poetry set on DVD on this show.

>> On one episode, Nikki Giovanni -- Everyone Knows Who this Is
>>   said I-81!

Nikki performed a poem on Def Jam that included a reference to I-81.
I-81 is the road that cuts across most of Virginia.  The I stands for
Interstate.

When I saw her on national tv mentioning I-81, I cheered, because that is
how you get to Roanoke, and also, that is how you get to Virginia Tech.

Which now in retrospect, occurs to me is a poem she should revive for this
sad event.  It was probably a joyful poem and since I saw it quite some time
ago, all I can say is I like it but not what it was about.

>> Benjamin Bratt (Julia Roberts ex) performing a poem by Miguel Pinero
>> (one of the founders of the Nuyorican).  Bratt did a biomovie of this

I am sure you know who Julia Roberts is.
Benjamin Bratt is a famous actor here who used to date her.  In spite of his
deceptive name, he is very proud of his Hispanic heritage.
Although I haven't seen it and don't know if it is out yet, Bratt made a
movie of Pinero's life.
I have been to the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe in Spanish Harlem in NY.
It's a fantastic place -- a bar where ONLY literature is performed.  And a
great deal of it specifically Nuyorican (New York Puerto Rican)

It's now around 30 years old I guess.
Pinero who is now deceased is obviously historically important for the role
he played in founding such a place.

I met Jo Harjo  approximately the same time as Nikki Giovanni.
Probably at the same literature festival.
I met Stacy Ann many years later.  I think Stacy Ann is from the Nuyorican
but it's been too long for me to remember.

>AND!!!!

>Reggie Gibson.

And Reggie  I met many years after that in Chicago and was pleased to see
him in the show.  There's a story out there somewhere, that neither Reggie
nor I would remember any longer, about how I was walking around Pruitt Igoe
neighborhood and the residents kept coming up to me and telling me not to
walk around there alone because it was dangerous.  I was walking in high
heels and a fashionable skirt that might have got me in trouble.  And
apparently did.  So then I ended up at the Chicago performance venue The
Note.  Reggie and several others performed.   Reggie couldn't stop laughing
at me and then drove me back to my hotel so that I wouldn't keep getting in
trouble.

>Reggie won the (I think correct me if I am wrong) 1998 Austin Slam with

The Slam is a poetry contest.

Avril Lavigne Keep Holding On Lyrics
You're not alone
Together we stand
I'll be by your side
You know I'll take your hand
When it gets cold
And it feels like the end
There's no place to go
You know I won't give in
no I won't give in

Keep holdin' on
'Cause you know we'll make it through
We'll make it through
Just, stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you
I'm here for you
There's nothing you can say (nothin' you can say)
Nothing you can do (nothin' you can do)
there's no other way when it comes to the truth
So, keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through
We'll make it through

So far away
I wish you were here
Before it's too late
This could all disappear
Before the doors close
And it comes to an end
With you by my side
I will fight and defend (ah ah)
I'll fight and defend (ah ah) yeah yeah

Keep holdin' on
'Cause you know we'll make it through
We'll make it through
Just, stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you
I'm here for you
There's nothing you can say
Nothing you can say
Nothing you can do
nothing you can do
There's no other way when it comes to the truth
So, keep holding on
'Cause you know we'll make it through
[ Lyrics found on http://www.metrolyrics.com ]

We'll make it through

Hear me when I say
When I say I believe
Nothing's gonna change
Nothing's gonna change trust in me
Whatever's meant to be
Will work out perfectly
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah....

La da da da, la da da da da
La da da da da da da da da

Keep holdin' on
'Cause you know we'll make it through
We'll make it through
Just stay strong
'Cause you know I'm here for you

I am glad he didn't do any overt or subtle campaigning for any agenda.

There's this very strange campaign advertisement for the Philadelphia
mayoral election.  I can't remember the candidate's name, but he essentially
promises to rid Philadelphia of crime.

I don't know.... it didn't sound like they were joking in the campaign
ad....why would they put a JOKE in a campaign?

At the end of the promise sentence, he says Blah blah blah.
Seriously.
I thought I was imagining it the first time, but I wasn't.

Incidentally, I just found this fresh article:

barred him from purchasing the handguns he used in the Virginia Tech
massacre, according to federal regulations. But it was unclear
Thursday whether anybody had an obligation to inform federal

I'd be glad to hear more on that election and so on, occasionally...

the issue has certainly been an ongoing debate.
I see the point made by either side.

Virginia is notorious for having nearly the most liberal of all gun purchase
states.

Today, many people showed their support for the victims by wearing the
school colors, orange and maroon.
Since orange is one of my favorite colors, I enjoyed wearing that color.

I'd be glad to inform, but DC will have its own campaign, and may have other
issues and fun advertisements.
If I notice interesting stories, I'll share

That's the thing.  I like this city.  There's so much nice to do this
weekend, but I am exhausted, and have a dozen business things I have to do
including catch up on my sleep.  stupid taxes.
