Just...
Sitting here, drinking NZ red and thinking that the pub is about to
close for good.
Someone must have called in all the outstanding loans - same as the
wider economy.
S
Hell yes?
What did you have in mind ?
Always an excellent option.
Provided the place is air conditioned.
D
Nobody knows.
pjk
Seems, everybody pawned their computers and moved to Salvos.
pjk
P.S. All kudos to you. It's so comendable of you to support our
wine industry in these times of hardship.
In the true spirit of ANZAC I reciprocate by opening St.Andrews
Shiraz from Clare Valley I was given last week by an old friend
visiting from the Big West Island.
I just had a lunch and a pint of pilsener in one of my
usual watering holes. An old wooden railway station
converted to a brewery/pub. It has an excellent air
conditioning, couple roaring open fire fireplaces.
Ideal place for this time of the year, i.e. winter.
pjk
An air conditioned PUB?
Please, do not be facetious. It borders on an oxymoron.
Now that it's illegal to smoke in them, the air quality has improved,
but quite a few fellows still come in straight from the job sites, and
don't hold up well in places that are very warm.
Plus, they appreciate the cool, cellar atmosphere and it doesn't
diminish their thirst one bit.
D
You do realize that the unqualified absolutes like that sound
very parochial, don't you. :-)
Life is good.
An anti-smoker without an overweening social concern?
A healthy lifestyle individualist?
I’ll drink to that ;-)
Damn well might. I'll even buy a round or two - just to hold
up my end of the evening.
And I wouldn't go so far as to use the phrase 'healthy lifestyle'.
It's only smoking I don't go in for.
Most other pleasures and vices are open season here.
D
Happy to help.! ;-)

I happened to come across some Ata Rangi and Martinborough reds.
Quite tolerable, I'd say.
Cheers.
I can quite picture the place! No doubt they call you by your first
name there...! ;-)
> Ideal place for this time of the year, i.e. winter.
Yeah, but I'm not sure about the cold beer. That one's a decidedly
summer beverage!
If I were in Wellington in winter, I'd be drinking some nice scotch!
BTW, my wife reckons she is quite sure now she could never live in NZ
again, after attending a wedding in Queenstown, where the overnight
temperature dropped to minus 7!
Where's global warming when one needs it?
Of course you can picture it, it's the place I took you to when
you were visiting. :-))

When I am real cold in winter I get stuck into armagnac.
In one of my other watering holes they make hot mulled wine.
It's not as good as the gluewein I drank in Zermatt, Insbruck
or Zell um See but the air is not as cold as it is over there in winter.

Since the French stopped testing in the Pacific it's getting
colder every year. This year there was enough snow in
the mountains to ski in early May.

Talking about Martinborough...
Last week while dining with a visiting friend from Melbourne
I ordered Murdoch James Pinot Noir 2004. The waitress
brought Murdoch James Pinot Meunier 2002 instead.
When she showed me the label I didn't look too closely
to notice the switch. When she poured it we noticed it was
darker than pinot noir. It was a b s o l u t e l y divine!!!
See if you can get Murdoch James Pinot Meunier 2002
in Oz. Buy it if you want to impress any of your business
friends who fancy themselves as wine connoisseurs.
I have no idea how much it costs, they didn't have it on
their wine menu and charged us the cost of Pinot Noir.
pjk
I don't understand your comments. Perhaps you didn't get my
comment. My "unqualified absolutes" referred to your "illegal
to smoke in them" as if you assumed your country's laws
applied to the whole world, or as if the world ended at
the Mexican border. :-))

The following link
http://tinyurl.com/rxgsz5
reveals the average price as NZD45. Which doesn't sound bad at all, if
it's as good as you describe.
Now whether it is available in Australia is another matter. But thanks
for the tip; I'll hunt around!
Cheers.
Scrap that...at a closer look, that review was from 2004, so this
price would not be overly relevant today.
And the Murdoch James winery website has no mention of that particular
wine.
So it looks like you may have got lucky... ;-)
Cheers.
Yes, I saw some old review also from 2004 when I tried to
look that wine up when I got back from the restaurant.
It must have aged beautifully, the reviews don't hint at anything
spectacular. My friend who knows his wines was also
impressed, so it wasn't just that time of the month for me. :-)
Anyway, there should be more of the MJ Pinot Noir around,
you may find it easier to get in Oz on the other side of Tasman.
It is quite good too, I am familiar with 2004 vintage, and for that
one it's just about right time to crack a bottle or two open now
in 2009.

We are having another shitty summer in a row. It's July 06 and we have yet
to have a 30C day. Unbelievable. If this global warming thing goes the
way it's been going so far, we will be skiing in June in just couple of years.

Actually, you're on to something. Each time I go to the CZ, I start
coughing 2 or 3 days into my visit. This time it took me three weeks to
get rid of it after I returned.

For the younger ones:
Q: What did the owl say to the nose?
A: Who knows?
Cheers, Slavek(ZVK)
An owl would be unlikely to speak to a nose, but the response is
appropriate.
Maybe the owls are different where you are.
Here they won't even speak to crows.
Crows, by the way, enjoy beer. Owls won't touch it.
Form your own opinion from that bit.

Owls drink Retsina and Ouzo, when you bring them to Athens.
Talk to the hand.

Then it must be true -- that travel changes everyone eh ?
Oops, that's why they didn't drink it when I kept
bringing them to Newcastle (which one?).
Cheers, Slavek(ZVK)
Did you ascertain their bevvy was coal enough?
(Pro prespolni: bevvy = beverage, napoj, drink)
Why would you want to go to such personal expense as
to bring owls to Athens? From where you live, isn't it easier
to take coal to Newcastle?

Yes, that's what I was refering to. Merkins often speak in
parochial absolutes even when they must realize they talk
to people who do not live where they live. :-)

The thing that's amusing about this English translation
is just how completely it looses all its s^mrnc.
