Wine fiesta in Santa Clara
Santa Clara is all decked out to receive wine producers from different
parts of the country, who will meet in this city in the central part
of the island to celebrate the 10th National Festival of Manually
Produced Wines.
The wine fiesta, held once a year, will begin on November 29 and will
last until December 2. These meetings are the extension of similar
events in the country's municipalities and provinces, where the best
samples produced by aficionados of the art of wine making are chosen.
The participants compete in the varied wine categories: dry and
semidry, sweet and semisweet, red, white and vermouth. In addition,
workshops are held where the participants present their papers on the
recovery of the traditional forms of elaboration and exhibit
techniques for upgrading the wines' quality.
Santa Clara wine producers were the first to establish a club –
Cubanicay – on a national level in 1984 and they make wine from
tamarind, a tropical fruit.
In Cuba the provinces with the most stable work in the elaboration and
promotion of wine production are Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, Villa
Clara, Ciego de Avila, Holguín, Pinar del Río and Havana.
