Detriot- In April, 1994, the University of Detroit Mercy became the first
univeristy in the U.S. to offer a credit-bearing course in the Croatian
language.
Now, with the assistance of the Croatian community of the Detroit
Metropolitan area, this institution is proud to implement the program in
a distance learning format- in other words, a correspondence course.
We invite and encourage you to participate in this unique and exciting
program. Additionally, at the time when we are still battling with the
Administration over separation of Croatian and Serbian languages, a
thriving Croatian language program at a major university can be used as a
great argument in our favor. The course was officially started in the
presence of Croatia's Ambassador to the U.S., Dr. Petar Sarcevic, on
Sept. 16, 1996.
The course on 100, 200, and 300 level are taught by Ms. Snjezana
Franetovic, who holds degrees in Languages and Literature and in History
of Art from the Croatian University of Zagreb. She taught English at the
Zagreb Language School for 13 years, and now for a decade Croatian in the
Detroit area through community and business groups. She is a member of
the CFU, CCU, AMAC and Croatian Woman. She was a major force behind the
implementation of the program.
The fifteen-unit correspondence course can be completed in 8-20 weeks.
The grade is based on 5 tests. You will receive the course materials by
UPS upon registering and paying tuition. The costs of the course are:
tuition $450, $100 for course materials, plus optional $50 if you wish to
receive academic credit.
For more information please call 313/993-6204 and ask for the foreign
language coordinator.
