Where's the best quality/value pub grub in the County?
I'll start with the Royal Oak at Lostwithiel (try Mother Hine's world
famous cow pie & chips c.4UKP or splash out on a large grilled freshly
caught at Fowey dover sole for c.12UKP) or the Trengilly Wartha nr
Constantine (try the superb freshly cooked local sausages & chips
c.3UKP). The Halzephron Inn nr Gunwalloe is generally very good (try
the homemade salmon fishcakes & chips c.4UKP).

Yes, fair enough. However the beer is overpriced, the 'real' ales of
dubious quality, and the decor is naff fake antique. Anything on Earth
would be better than the Royal Talbot next door, though.

Try The Pandora at Restronguet. Downstairs is good for the smaller pocket,
but upstairs is really good and more expensive

Yes I know it well. Tend not to go there because of yachties and
absence of guest ales. St Austell HSD is worth drinking these days so
I might return. Seems a long way from the main road.
Another trusty eatery is the Wheel Inn at Tresillian. Good for its
scampi & chips- the chips are especially good for a pub. No decent
beer however!

I little unfair. I've never had to return a pint at the Royal Oak and
it does a fairly enterprising guest ale list most times. Remains
surely the best pubgrub/real ale venue in all Cornwall!
Another good eatery is that pub on the St Mawes side of the King Harry
Ferry which is unfortunate to be alongside a smelly farm! Can't
remember its name it's the one where the landlord committed suicide a
year or two ago- not because of the smell I suspect!
Anyone offer other recommendations?

If you like simple food and are in the big City (Truro) try the
"City Inn" up Pydar St. nearly under the viaduct. Also a little
pocket of culinary pleasure resides in the "Wig and Pen", pricey and
a small choice but very good.

Do you mean the Smugglers Inn? Trying desparately to think of any other pubs
within spitting distance of that side of the KHF. Surely the best cream teas
in the entire universe, they also have great food in the evening...

But (and this is a true story)... Some friends of mine had dinner there one
night. During their starter there was some commotion and a distressed Chinese
runs through the restaurant shouting "Man drowning, man drowning!". (For those
not familiar with the area the SI is at Tolverne, right on the bank of the Fal
where there are always a number of ships in mothballs, with accompanying
caretaker crews of various nationalities.) A couple of people made a hurried
run for their dinghy to effect a rescue and in true English stiff upper lip
tradition everyone else went back to their dinner. Twenty minutes later the
main courses had just been served, the door opened again and a second rather
damp and rapidly stiffening Chinese was dragged through the dining room and
out of sight. Once again there are a few pale faces but most folks persevere
with dinner. A little later on and it's time for desert - wait for it -
mandarin trifle.

Can I add a request for good food pubs that welcome young children (3
yrs and 1 yr). As an ex-pat Cornishman 'coming home' for a visit it
would be good to have a pasty and a local pint.

I think he's referring to something a wee bit inland. Visiting St. Mawes
last summer, we were taken to a rural pub off the road to KHF. The
outdoor bouquet was a mite unsettling as the scent of fresh pies -- of
the farmyard variety -- was wafting from the barns. A change of wind
direction would've made all the difference. Those brave hearts without
reservations [of either kind] ate al fresco, but we were honored with a
corner inside, and my pasty was, indeed, very good.

The name eludes me at the moment, but I've a watercolor of it, painted by
one of our hosts, Audrey Wheeler [of St. Mawes]. The farmhouse across the
road had round rooms at each end ["so the devil can't find a hiding place"],
as I recall.

Good grief, rural Cornwall being discussed by a someone under the shadow
of Oban's Folly and a escapee from the US' mid-west. An ever shrinking
sphere.

While I'm here, I'll risk mentioning a pretty fair pub in the US: in
Dunellen, Florida [! north of St. Petersburg, south of Tarpon Springs/
Palm Harbor], there's a place with a sign "British Pub" outside.
That may not be its actual name, but it's the dominant sign and its
ales and food have been great. Its steak and kidney pie is a favorite
of mine -- and I'm one of the masses loathing kidney-anything.

Pob hwyl -- sorry, Welsh is as close as I can get to Cornish... 8^)

Now I've made it home, and the lovely watercolor even has the sign in
front: Roseland Inn. Audrey's a great lady and a very fine artist.
Fortunately she took the artistic liberty to omit the bouquet.

I'm fed up with this... instead of ppl just going on and on about all the
wonderfull places to eat _real_ food in this universe.. could somebody
p l e a s e finally send me an offer of some telework.. (customer
support/translations.. any gawd damn thing.. as a britsh war disabled
pensioner the last 23 years with a 130US$/monthy pension I have had
600 + jobs anyhow.. of course.. or do *you* want to offer me a permanent
position under EU labour legal framework!? ;) ) - and then; me and
the Kid will actually be able to go travel again - even a day trip out of
bl**dy awefull COLD depressing Berlin here would be good. Since the
silly bl**dy wall has been taken away.. there are litterally millions
of mostly (like me..) overqualified ppl also willing to work for peanuts
streaming into this city..! What bl**dy chance does a person have of finding
somebody who is happy to exploit oneself like in the past?

Who wants to live from nearly 820 quids worth of various state support
from this and that european govt. where one has worked ones butt off in the
past.. and ...as a war disabled single father brit in Germany..
when there must be real jobs out there paying 750 quid (nett!) that one would
gladly take as an alternative! ;)

Is there anybody with a nice house in (e.g.) St Mawes or St Ives.. even
Newquay.. who needs a competent cornish male.. ex RAF - ex Civ. Security
official and chauffeur.. to come and look after it all expences paid
for a few months...? ;) <I know I know - wishfull thinking but!>

- or how about this.. u have a nice small... medium size hotel with
decent managers flat on or near the premisces.. and need a competent manager
to live-in and let you sit back and watch the profits soar!???
(Places without a decent clean phone line at least can forget it! ;)
- even as an employed person I still _need_ my net access! ;)

Ah well what do you expect for postings from a guy who has been at the
London Metal Exchange.. the night supervisor of cleaning services at
Hannover Airport.. hmmmm the comms operator for the Mc. Cartney lawyers
on Pall Mall (back then!) etc etc.. when he finds himself stuck here in
Berlin with nothing to amuse him or keep him occupied other than the leased
line to the internet! ;)

{Even the business of wiping the "diabolical evil of persisting
european Monarchys from the face of the earth" - is not enough to keep me
fully employed now that the matter seems to have gained a certain popular
momentum of it's own! ;)

Have a nice one folks - [..or 3 if u can get away with it! ;) ]

ron b
-and the son of a hunn - roddy...
