Before you begin to read the history of this surname please refer to
the story of the establishment of Zhou Dynasty (1134BC to 256BC).

King Wu3 delegated power to his 13th brother named Shu Zhen4 Duo2 to
rule a district called Cao2 (present day Ding4 Tao2 Xian4 in Shandong
province). He also bestowed him the title Bo2 (Count or Earl) which was
inheitable. He renamed it as the State of Cao2. Shu Zhen4 Duo2 surnamed
his children CAO2.

During the Spring and Autumn Period (722BC to 481BC) in 515BC Cao2
Wu3 became the ruler of the State of Cao2. He went to the State of Song4
(present day Shang Qiu Xian4 in Shandong province) for an official visit.
He was imprisoned by the ruler of Song4 and died in the prison. His younger
brother Cao2 Ye3 became the ruler of Cao2. However in 510BC the new
ruler's uncle Cao2 Tong murdered him and proclaimed himself the new ruler.
Four years later in 506BC Cao2 Lu3 the younger brother of the previous ruler
(Cao2 Ye3) took revenge of his brother's death and had the uncle
assassinated and became the new ruler.
These affairs of regicide were the ugliest events in the land. Seeing
the State of Cao2 was in turmoil, in 487BC the ruler of Song4 conquered
and annexed Cao2. No one protested not even the center authority of Zhou
Court.

Surname Cao2 was originated in an area called Qiao2 Prefecture
during the Han4 Dynasty (206BC to 220AD).
Qiao2 means : guard tower on top of a wall.
Prefecture means : an administrative district.
The present day location of Qiao2 Prefecture is in
Hao2 Xian4 in Anhui province China.
