This is the history of surname Jin.

Before you begin to read the history of this surname please take a
glance of the brief account of Yellow Emperor.

His son Yi3 Zhi4 succeeded him. On the day when he was installed as
the leader, a golden phoenix flew down and perched on top of a house right
opposite where he sat. His followers reckoned it was an auspicious
beginning. They decided to use gold as the emblem of their tribe. Since
he was their leader they titled him Jin Tian Shi4 (golden skys) and the
name of their tribe was known as Jin Tian Tribe whose settlement was in
Qu Fu4 (present day Qu Fu4 city in Shandong province). Yi3 Zhi4 died in
2515BC. Some of his descendants adopted JIN as their surnames and left
off the words Tian Shi4 (skys).

Surname Jin was originated in an area called Peng2 Cheng2 Prefecture
during the Han4 Dynasty (206BC to 220AD).
Peng2 means : plenty; strong and huge.
Cheng2 means : city-walls; a city; a town.
The present day location of Peng Cheng2 Prefecture is in
Tong2 Shan Xian4 in Jiangsu province China.
