EXHIBITIONS
Young artist -- Three young artists are presenting their contemporary
works at the Red Gate Gallery through August 28. They are Kang
Jianfei, Li Yanbo and Li Qiang.
A recent graduate from the Central Academy of Fine Art, Kang works in
the time-honoured woodcut tradition as well as making mixed media
abstract prints.
Harbin-born Li Yanbo will exhibit his mixed media paintings on paper,
a feature of which is the often quizzical juxtaposition of elements of
the symbolic with the banal.
Li Qiang's richly decorative abstract paintings in gold, red and black
provide a contrast of method and approach that typify the
individuality of each artist in the exhibition.

Ink and oil -- The Wan Fung Art Gallery is displaying representative
works of 40 ink and oil painters including Nan Haiyan, Lao Dao and Ma
Haifang.
The paintings on display include landscape, flower-and-bird and figure
paintings in different styles. They express the painters' profound
love for nature and the human world.
Most of the paintings are fusing western styles with oriental and
touch upon both ancient culture and real life. Time: 9 am-4 pm, until

Painting on porcelain -- A special exhibition will be held at the
Baihuarong Gallery inside the Bells Tower.
The show will feature some works of Yu Xiping, a ceramic artist from
Jingdezhen, China's porcelain city.
Yu will give lectures, showing how to paint on ceramic at the show.
Working as a ceramic artist since 1985, he has created many new
techniques in his painting and holds his solo shows in Beijing time
and again.

Oil painting show -- A two-man oil painting exhibition will be held
from August 22 at Beijing International Art Palace.
Entitled "Passion of Home," the show will feature 60-plus works of
Xing Guozhen and Shen Jiguang which are full of artists' love for land
and home.
Graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Central Drama
Academy respectively in 1960s, Xing and Shen have devoted themselves
to exploration of oil painting.

Folk painting show -- Organized by the Yanhuang Art Museum and Baoding
Collecting Association, a folk painting show is to be held from August
22 to September 5.
There are more than 100 works dating back from Ming Dynasty to New
China and done by acclaimed artists such as Ji Xiaolan, Ding Foyan,
Huang Yi and Mei Qing.

Dance --"Brilliant Dunhuang," a dance drama, will be staged on August
18-19 at the Beijing Century Theatre as an activity of the '97 China
International Opera and Dance Drama Year.
Inspired by the brilliant mural paintings of China's Dunhuang
Grottoes, the dance drama is created by Sendai Hanayagi, head of the
Japan Sendai Hanayagi Dance Institute. With superb performing skills,
beautiful costumes and unique stage designs, the dance drama "revives"
images of the mural paintings and expresses the desire of human beings
for peace, justice and the beautiful life. In 1994, the dance drama
was first performed in Tokyo and created a sensation among Japanese
audiences.
This time, the dance drama is jointly performed by the Japan Sendai
Hanayagi Dance Institute and the China Local Operas Institute.

Dance drama -- The National Dance Company of South Korea will perform
on August 23-24 to mark the fifth anniversary of the establishment of
diplomatic relations between China and the Republic of Korea.
Set up in 1962, the National Dance Company of Korea aims to revitalize
the traditional dances of Korea and keep pace with the fast-changing
world. With 60-plus first-class artists, the art company has done a
good job in popularizing traditional Korean dances by staging more
than 50 items and touring more than 60 countries.
It is the second time the art company will perform in China. The
programme includes a group of traditional Korean dances and a dance
drama entitled "Portrait of a Sorcerers." The dance drama is adapted
from the novel of the same name written by Kim Dong-lee, a pioneer of
Korean short stories. The choreographer is Kook Soo-ho.
The activity is sponsored by the China Performing Arts Agency (CPAA)
and organized by the CPAA Cultural Entertainment Company. After the
Beijing performance, the National Dance Company of Korea will tour
Shanghai and Changchun.

Short, short play --Beijing's theatre-goers have entertained
themselves this summer by watching "short short plays."
After "Green House," a drama trilogy on urban life, "Romance of All
Seasons" will be performed by the Beijing People's Art Theatre. It
tells three love stories in three seasons. To cater to modern tastes,
the play borrows some techniques from film and TV series. Xia Yu, a
promising actor, will star in the play.

Original opera --The Liyuan Theatre at Qianmen Hotel presents Peking
Opera in the original style. The theatre has revived the ambience of
old Beijing by setting up Ming-style tables so guests can sample
snacks during performances.

CONCERTS
Piano recital -- Wang Xiaohan's piano recital will be presented on
August 21 at the Beijing Concert Hall.
Wang, 17, is a fourth grader of the Elementary Music School attached
to the Central Conservatory of Music. He started to learn piano when
he was 4 years old. In the current piano recital, he will play the
immortal pieces by Beethoven, Bach, Schubert, Debussy, Scarlatti and

Teenager concert -- The Shenzhen Teenager Aiyue Chamber Music Troupe
will perform in Beijing Concert Hall on August 18 and 19.
Members of the troupe are aged from 10 to 14. Conductor Wang Jiayang,
a graduate from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, is "well over 60,"
according to the press release.

Vocal master -- Wen Kezheng, who has earned acclaim in the United
States, will give a solo concert. Singers Cheng Zhi, Yang Hongji, Wang
Xia, Wang Limin and Jiang Shan will co-perform with him.
Songs include "Great Wall is in My Heart," "On Songhua River,"
"Spanish Girls," "My Country and I," "My Sun," "Song of Changjiang,"
"I Love you, China" and "Ode to the Moon."

Korean music -- The Chinese Korean Youth Music Research Committee will
hold a concert of Korean music.
Musicians including Jin Yongzhe, Jin Hui, Jin Yan and Lin Jing will
perform such pieces as "Nobody Sleeps Tonight," "Dressed in Suits,"
"Want to be Back Home" and cello concertos.

Folk music -- The Central Ethnic Symphony Orchestra will hold a
traditional Chinese folk music concert, in an attempt to nurture music

Piano solo -- Wang Xiaohan, student of piano master Zhou Guanren will

Guitar night -- Guitarists Sergio Assad and Odair Assad will hold a
concert in Beijing on August 22.
Both hail from Brazil and have been recognized across the world for
their technical virtuosity, their uncanny precision of ensemble and
their musical and stylistic sensitivity.

Tea and jazz -- The Wide Angle Jazz Band will perform on the second

Saturday night at Sanwei Bookstore is a night for Chinese folk music.
Enchanting Chinese melodies will flow from the Chinese dulcimer,

ACROBATICS
Acrobatics -- The China Acrobatic Troupe is juggling, cycling and
tumbling every night at Chaoyang Theatre.
The 46-year-old troupe, one of the best in the country, has toured
more than 60 countries and won awards in international competitions.
The company's repertoire includes tightrope walking, martial arts and
traditional Chinese magic tricks.
Acrobats juggle, cycle and tumble on the stage, winning praise from
audiences both at home and abroad.
