Verizon's PUBLIC statement is that demand is down. Which is somewhat
true. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. The "rest of the story" is
that Usenet generates over 95% of the abuse complaints that ALL ISP's get.
AOL dropped Usenet years ago. Several other providers have dropped off. One
of the problems is that when the wars that are generated on Usenet carry
over to complaints and the demands on dwindling resources of the carriers,
and complaints are not resolved in favor of the people issuing complaints,
they often form grudges against the carrier, and that distills down to
service attacks on the carrier, again making an unreasonable drain on
limited resources. Usenet has become the CB radio of the 21st century and
has attracted all of the mentally unstable people that dominated Citizen's
Band radio in the U.S. 30 years ago. Now it is international. Such as the
political debates that go on between socialism and democracy. This attracts
national computer vandalism from nations who wage computer wars. In short
being dragged into these wars unwillingly Verizon and the other carriers
just want to avoid the problems that come with it.
Thus far - I am still evaluating my participation post September 30th.
With my stalker and others -I must say this is just NOT worth it.
