Solo Art Shaw commemorative art contest
YANGON,31 Jan -Prizes were presented to winners in the art contest held in commemoration of U Lun Gywe Solo Art Show this evening at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel. Present were Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, heads of department, the rector of University of Culture, the principal of Art and Sculpture School, prize winning students and guests.
Minister U Win Sein gave a speech. U Lun Gywe presented K 1.5 million for preservation of paintings at the National Museum and for the welfare funds of students of Art and Sculpture School.
Minister U Win Sein accepted the cash. U Lun Gywe then presented an oil painting for the museum. Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe accepted it. Minister U Win Sein, Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt and Director-General U Myint Thein Swe presented prizes to winners in the art contest. Every first prize winner in oil and water-colour contests received K 10,000 plus art equipment, second prize winner K 7,000 plus art equipment and third prize winner K 5,000 plus art equipment. Minister U Win Sein presented certificates of honour to persons who rendered assistance to the art show. Director-General U Myint Thein Swe presented gifts to judges. (5) Course No 6 for management level officers of
Customs Department opens
YANGON, 31 Jan-Course No 6 for management level officers of Customs Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue opened at the training hall of Customs Department this morning.
Present were Director General of Customs Department U Tun Chun. Deputy Director-General Thiha Thura U Thein Tun Tin, directors and trainee officers. Director-General U Tun Chun said courses were conducted with the objectives of enabling the officers to understand the State s economic Police and cur rent economic situation, procedures and rules of the department and other related departments and to possess capability to manage staff and turning out junior leaders with good morale.
He said Myanmar is a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), World Customs Organization (WCO) and ASEAN and rules, procedures and agreements are to be practically implemented for the interest of the State according to the current situations.In so doing, the staff have to learn occupational knowledge at home and abroad and experience throughout their career. Management level officers will surely discharge mammoth duties in the future, he added. He urged the trainees to make efforts to possess skill, management, better qualifications and good morale. The two-month course is being attended by 20 trainees of Customs Department.

(6) Management, clerical staff courses opened
YANGON, 31 Jan- Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin addressed the opening ceremony of Management Course No 4 and Clerical Staff Course No 2 at the Central Training School of the Education and Training Department in Ward 51, Dagon Myothit (North) Township, this morning.
Also present on the occasion were directors-general, deputy directors-general of departments under the ministry, directors and officials. Altogether 60 staff officers and service personnel (Admin Grade-II) of State and Division and Township Development Affairs Committees are attending the management course and 60 clerks (Grade-II) and (Grade III) the clerical staff course. The two courses will last eight weeks.

YANGON, 31 Jan-The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Courses, is striving for national reconsolidating for the country to emerge a peaceful, modern and developed one.
Realizing that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation at all, remnant armed groups who understood the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

Similarly, Pvt Thang Oak of CNA armed group in North-West Command area, Pvt Nai Ta La Mon (a) Zaw Min of New Mon State Party armed group with a grenade in Southern Command area and captain level Kha Shan, organizer Aik Kywe and Pvt Aik Lin of Lahu armed group with one .30 carbine, one magazine and 14 rounds of ammunition in Triangle Region Command area exchanged arms for peace.
Officials warmly welcomed 29 persons who exchanged arms for peace at the respective military camps in December 1999 and fulfilled their requirements. More members of armed groups plan to exchange arms for peace.

(13) 1.3958 kilos of heroin seized in Lashio
YANGON, 31 Jan- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, lay in waiting near Yaykandaung Pagoda, Lashio, Shan State (North), and stopped and searched a white vehicle (1Ka/ 4917) which was on its way from Lashio to Mandalay, on 1 7 January. They arrested Cho Min Sein (a) Pho Cho, 35, son of U Kyaw Thein of Ward 7, and Than Zaw Win, 31, son of U Maung Win of Ward 9, Lashio, who were on the vehicle and involved in drug trafficking.
Further information led to the arrest of Kyaw Win, 31, son of U Kyaw Lwin, and Ma Khaung Nu, 30, daughter of U San Maung of Maunghan Village, Mohnyin Township, Ma Saung Naw, 42, daughter of U Daung Zaung of Hopang, Ma Thein Nwe (a) Ma Tin Tin Hla, 40, daughter of U Maung Ko of Ward 7, Lashio and Tin Than Oo, 42, son of U Hlaing of Mandalay, together with 1.3958 kilos of heroin hidden in 88 soap cases, at the house of Ma Than Than Oo, daughter of U Mya Hmwe of Ward 1, Lashio. Action is being taken against the culprits according law.

YANGON, 31 Jan-Eighty-one members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division. Eighty-one members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 13 October 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Central Command , the ministers, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and
Development Council and officials, paid obeisance to historic Shinpin
Sekkeinde Pagoda in Minbu Township this morning.
Senior General Than Shwe viewed alluvia plantation in Ayeyawady River from
the pagoda.
The Senior General presented donation to the members of the Pagoda Board of
Trustees.
The Senior General and party went to the site of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway)
and inspected bore piling.
Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein reported on the site
chosen, designating the site, preparations for the project and bore piling.
Superintending Engineer (Project) U Han Zaw reported on the project, Minister
for Construction Maj- Gen Saw Tun and Chairman Brig-Gen Thein Zaw gave
supplementary reports.
Senior General Than Shwe then gave guidance on work and inspected scale model
of the bridge and sample of earth.
Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) is under construction between Mingala Street in
Magway and Phayakoehsugon in Htaukshabin Village in Minbu Township.
The bridge is 8,989 feet long and 28 feet wide with two six-foot pedestrian
lanes. Lower part of the bridge will be built with reinforced concrete and
upper part with steel beams. The bridge can bear 60-ton loads.
The Senior General was briefed on agriculture in Mandalay and Magway
Divisions at Mann oilfield combined office of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise.
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint reported to the Senior General on the area of
Mandalay Division, total sown acreage, land use, rain fall, inflow of water
into the dams, irrigation capacity, cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy,
cotton, beans and pulses, edible oil crops, maize and kitchen crops,
reclamation of vacant and fallow lands, efforts to boost paddy yield, paddy
purchase and alluvial land cultivation.
In giving guidance, the Senior General stressed the need to make plans to
cultivate paddy on all suitable land to the full to ensure rice sufficiency
in the Division.
Col Thein Zaw reported on rainfall in Magway Division, sown acreage, land
under crops, existing dams and lakes and plans to extend more irrigation
facilities, land reclamation and cultivation of ten private companies which
had been granted to conduct agriculture in the Division, seasonal cultivation
on bank of rivers and streams, efforts to successfully implement tasks,
efforts to put land under monsoon paddy, summer paddy, cotton, beans and
pulses, kitchen crops and other crops as targeted and paddy and cotton
purchase.
Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin explained efforts
being made to boost paddy produce in Mandalay and Magway Divisions,
significant success being achieved in putting land under beans and pulses and
edible oil crops, cotton cultivation and purchase, implementation of
sugarcane farming to supply enough raw materials to sugar mills in the two
Divisions and regional greening undertakings.
The Senior General gave guidance on boosting per acre yields of crops
cultivated in the regions and extending sown acreage and irrigated acreage.

YANGON, 7 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council
Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected
construction of An Airfield yesterday morning.
Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western
Command Maj- Gen Aung Htwe, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and
officials reported on progress of work. The Senior General then gave
guidance.
The Senior General and party attended a ceremony to donate provisions to
monasteries in An Township the ceremony was held at Tooth Relic Dhamma
Beikman on Dhamma Rekkhita Hill.
Congregation received the Five Precepts from Presiding Sayadaw
Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Varalankara of Yangon Aungyamye Pariyatti
Sarthintaik.

YANGON, 7 Feb - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt inspected operations of Myanma Shipyards this afternoon.
Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Managing Director of MS U Percy Maung
Maung reported to the Secretary-l on building and repair of ships of
government bodies, private enterprises and organizations abroad and building
of a new shipyard with a docking capacity up to 12,000 tons. Secretary-l
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt gave suggestions.
Together with officials, the Secretary-l inspected repair of Myayadana cruise
ship of Anauk Pwasaw-ywa Tourism Service, Bagan archaeological region,
building of new vessel of a foreign organization and repair of yachts of
round-the-world tourney to their original design.

National Indoor Stadium-l, Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, this morning,
attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Secretary of MNOC Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint reported on
the choosing and forming of Myanmar selected football team, training
selection of the manager, coach and doctors, management affairs for the
football team, international sport events in Year 2000, assistance of the
football foundation, matters relating to upgrading the committee for
achieving success and medical support, committee into the sport and medical
support committee under the Olympic Committee, the giving of camp training to
athletes, the giving of annual fees to international and regional sports
federations and construction of the sports ground in Upper Myanmar.
Those present at the meeting took part in the discussions.

(7) Minister inspects factories in Magway, Sagaing Divisions
YANGON, 7 Feb - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by
departmental heads, inspected Pakokku Cigarette Factory No 2 in Magway
Division on 5 February.
The minister and party also inspects Virginia Tobacco Factory and gave
instructions on extended cultivation of Virginia plantations of the factory.
Yesterday, the minister arrived at Pakokku Dyeing and Printing Plant of
Myanma Textile Industries to be opened soon, and heard reports on the factory
by Managing Director Col Oo Thein Maung of MTI.
At Pakokku Textile Factory Project Office, Managing Director U Thaik Tun of
Myanma General and Maintenance Industries reported on progress in
construction of the road and the factory.

(8) 80 kilos of Ephedrine powder seized in Mandalay
YANGON, 7 Feb - Members of local intelligence unit while waiting on 35th
Street between 84th and 85th Streets in Maha-aungmye Township on 29 January,
nabbed drug traffickers U Nan(a) Nan Doe Thang, 49, son of U San Kho Hauk of
Panglong Ward, Kalay Township, and Maung Myint, 38 son of U Ba Taw of Buta
Myothit Ward in Kalay together with 17 packets of Ephedrine powder weighing
80 kilos.
The Ephedrine powder can be used in producing stimulant tablets.
According to their confession, authorities nabbed Thang Lyan Ha, 48, at
Kyaukhninsi Inn on 27th Street between 82nd and 83rd Streets in Chanayethazan
and Pa Thang, 27 at Myoma Inn on 80th Street between 25th and 26th Streets in
Aungmyethazan.
Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic
Substances Law.
