(1) Senior General Than Shwe Sends Message of Felicitations to Maldives
On the occasion of the 37th Anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic
of Maldives, which falls on 26 July 2002, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of
the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a
message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President
of the Republic of Maldives.
(2) Secretary-1 Receives CITIC Chairman and Party
Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt
received visiting Chairman of the China International Trust and Investment
Corporation (CITIC) of the People’s Republic of China Mr. Wang Jing and party
at the Ministry of Defence on 25 July.
(3) Diplomacy Course No 4/2002 Concludes
The Diplomacy Course No. 4/2002 for officers, organized by the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, concluded at the ministry on 25 July. A total of 40 trainees
from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of National Planning and
Economic Development, the Ministry of Commerce, Yangon University, the Supreme
Court, Central Institute of Civil Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
attended the course which lasted 16 weeks.
(4) Seminar on Ship Safety and Management Held
Minister for Transport attended the seminar on ship safety and management held
at the Sedona Hotel in Yangon on 25 July. Minister addressed and pointed out
the fact that the SOLAS 74 being practiced in Myanmar, International Safety
Management Code (ISM) must be adopted to ensure that ships can navigate safely.
According to the code, ship owners and organizations need to obtain the
certificates issued by the authority concerned. Services can be improved by
following the instructions, and so can the standard of ship’s security. The
seminar was sponsored by Ferriby International (UK).
(5) Applications Invited to MMU and MAEU
The Myanmar Maritime University (MMU) under the Ministry of Transport will be
opened in December 2002. A total of 100 students each for six — five-year
courses for BE (Naval Architecture), BE (Marine Engineering), BE (Port & Harbor
Engineering), EB (River & Ocean Engineering), BE (Marine Electrical System &
Electronics) and BSc / BSc (Hons) (Nautical Science) will be admitted to the
university.
The Myanmar Aerospace Engineering University (MAEU) under the Ministry of
Science and Technology will be opened in December 2002. The university will
accept 100 students each for three — five-year courses for BE
(Aerospace-Propulsion & Flight Vehicles), BE (Aerospace-Avionics) and BE
(Aerospace-Electrical Systems and Instrumentation).
(6) Italian Tourists to Visit Myanmar
As Myanmar is becoming popular year after year among European tourists due to
her peaceful, pleasant and beautiful itineraries, more Italian tourists are
visiting Myanmar.
As a special arrangement, some 90 Italian tourists will arrive in Yangon by
chartered flight on 1 August under the sponsorship of Myanmar Lotus Travel &
Tour Co Ltd based in Myanmar. The tourists will visit Bagan, Mandalay and Inle
and will leave Yangon for Phukhet on 8 August.
(7) China Yunnan Airlines Spreads its Wings between Kunming and Mandalay
China Yunnan Airlines of the People’s Republic of China launched its air
services between Kunming in Yunnan Province and Mandalay on 1st April. China
Yunnan Airlines starts Kunming-Mandalay-Kunming flights, it is the first step
taken to link Mandalay International Airport with destinations such as Yunnan.
