YANGON, 6 Jan—Over 1,200 members of the Myanmar Women’s Affairs Federation
and the Taninthayi Division Organization for Women’s Affairs met at the
gymnasium in Myeik, Taninthayi Division, yesterday morning.
On the occasion, MWAF President Daw Than Than Nwe delivered a speech, saying
that the MWAF has turned one year and the members made a tour of the region to
review implementation of the tasks and to find out the strong and weak points.
The federation is implementing its seven objectives, and it will continue to
carry out its basic principles effectively, she pledged. The government is
giving encouragement to social organizations in an attempt to enlist the
strength of the people for national progress and for perpetual existence of the
nation. Now, such non-governmental organizations as the Union Solidarity and
Development Association, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association,
Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Red Cross Society and War Veterans Organization are
playing an enthusiastic role in carrying out the five rural development tasks,
she said. The MWAF too is playing an active role in the tasks for prevention of
violence against women, trafficking in persons, and raising the life of women
in collaboration with related ministries, she added.
As is known to all, the government, upholding our three main national causes,
is putting the twelve objectives into practice day and night for national
progress. The members are to be fully aware of a wide variety of fabrications
manufactured by internal and external destructive elements with the intention
of tarnishing the prestige of the Tatmadaw and sowing hatred and discord among
the people. With the understanding of the State’s objectives, international
affairs, and prevailing evidences in the nation, the members will further be
imbued with patriotism and Union Spirit. The members are to make combined
endeavours to refute the groundless accusations and to lend themselves to
successful implementation of the seven-point Road Map, he noted.
In conclusion, she called on the members to make efforts to be able to stand as
a force of the nation, while contributing towards nation-building undertakings
in cooperation with social organizations.
Next, MWAF Vice-President Daw Khin Lay Myaint dealt with matters on trafficking
in persons; General Secretary Professor Dr Daw Khin Mar Tun, on promotion of
the women’s life; and second leader of organizing group Additional Director
of the Supreme Court Daw Thein Thein Nyunt, on the protection of women.
Six groups, each of which was made up of 30 members out of those present, held
frank discussions with members of the MWAF field trip on education, health,
economic and social sectors.
