Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin told reporters that "If he wishes to
study overseas, as a Chinese citizen, he can, like any other Chinese
citizens, process relevant procedures with relevant departments
through normal channels in accordance to the law."
China Daily carried a similar report saying: Chen Guangcheng, a
Chinese citizen, may apply to study abroad according to laws with
relevant departments and through the same channels as other Chinese
citizens." (see website below)
Chinese President Hu Jintao whom Obama had honoured with a state
reception when he last visited the White House, must have returned
this diplomatic quid pro quo, as this gesture to his graceful host
President Obama. Now, on the surface, Obama has scored a diplomatic
victory...for the USA...for human rights. It will go a long way
towards Obama's bid to win another term.

The main issue is about China and US relationship
within the backdrop of the export of US values to
other countries (including China).
Though not the overall main player...Chen is one of
the front man in China...on human rights.

In olden China, a man lose face if he had to give away

Chen a western pawn. It is natural that different people will reach
different conclusions concerning Chen or any other activists. One
should at least watch the video clip he had made and keep in mind
that he was blind and hence could not really tell whether he was
actually under watch as he had described in his video.
IMO, he has good reasons to be unhappy for being harassed, real
and imagined. However, the root cause is local and personal. On why
the central government did not take action to help him, it is a
legitimate
question. However, every government has to prioritize and solve its
biggest
and most urgent problem first. Take a good look at him. He is very
healthy
and living relative well for a blind 40 years old. In contrast,
millions of
Chinese are living under worse situations. Individuals can see the
tree and
forget the forest. A government cannot, else it is not doing its job.
I don't think he is any kind of traitor. However, in the sense that he
forced
the central government of divert time and energy on other more urgent
matters,
he is not doing the country a favor. Of course, many will blame him
for giving
foreign powers an excuse to deny China's rightful place in the world.
And I
think they have a point.
