UK News
-------
The government had a comfortable majority at the end of the emergency
debate on the economy last night. However, the signs are that the
government will come under further pressure from some conservative MP's
over relationship with Europe. Mr Lamont was clear about the policy of
keeping down inflation and control of public spending.
David Mellor is to make his resignation speech today following his
decision yesterday to step down as Heritage secretary. In a letter to the
PM, he gave his reasons as wanting to stop the barrage of criticisms from
the tabloid press from damaging the party and the government. Many people
have expressed regret at his departure.
The PM will meet the Irish PM today to discuss the progress of the talks
on Northern Ireland.
A British tourist was amongst those who died in the french floods. He
suffered a heart attack after seeing his caravan swept away by the flood
water.
European News

The EC president, Jacques Delors has warned that Britain could find
itself part of the second tier of a "2-speed" Europe if it does not
ratify the Maastricht treaty. He also said that it should be possible to
add to the treaty to satisfy the Danes.
International News
------------------
The leader of the ANC has announced that he will be re-opening talks with
Pres. de Klerc in the next few days. The news was given by the UN
Secretary General in New York.
Russia has said it will sell two nuclear submarines to Iran, despite the
objections of the USA.
Three admirals are to be replaced after being involved in a cover up over
allegations of sexual harassment at a US Navy social event.
Following the severe drought, there is now a new threat in Somalia from
the rains. Many people, especially children, are too weak to cope with
the wet weather.

I LOVE IT !!!
However, I daresay that, in common with the very many previous such incidents in
which erect pillars of the Tory establishment have personified the ethics of
conservativism, both this and the recent currency debacle will be completely
forgotten within a couple of years (and certainly long before the next election).
David Mellor will probably be back in the Cabinet (preferably without air-holes).

P.S. Who was the Home Sec/ Foreign Sec/ other senior cabinet member who was
nailed for drunk driving a few years back (1980 ish ? I seem to remember: 10mph,
bumping into the kerb every now and then around St. James's Park) ??

There are two possible candidates here. One is the fictional Home Secretary in the last episode of Yes Minister which saw Jim Hacker elected party leader and hence became PM and so the series changed its name to Yes Prime Minister. The other candidate is Sir Gerald Nabarro (spelling ?), a Tory minister in the seventies. I don't think he had a particularly high office, may be just transport minister.

This thread can go on for ever: there was Ernie Marples (who
remembers HIM) Transport minister in the Macmillan gov, who was done for
drunk driving, and George Brown Foreign Sec under Harold Wilson,
photgraphed on his back in the gutter, a scene which provoked the
memorable remark in a TIMES editorial "better the Foreign Secreatry
drunk than the Prime Minister sober" - about the only funny remark ever
made by the TIMES.
But are you sure Nabarro was a minister at all: I thought the
point about NAb was that he was the eternal eccentric back-bencher
He had severa cars with registration numbers NAB1 NAB2 NAB3 etc and when
he had to sell one of them, there were moves to bail him out as a
national institution.

You're right - I think the 10mph bit was Yes Minister. A program that was,
apparently, remarkably true to life.
