Just when you say to yourself, "बेव्डा कुठे घेलो?" he makes an appearance.
Looks like Bevdabhai Surti had a good Thanksgiving, and is back trying
to needle people. Hey, welcome back. The only "entertainment" in this
newsgroup during your absence was your Pakistani brother J Ikball's even
more inane posts. I think he has just declared a "jihad" on his own
shadow, which he thought made him look Jewish.
Oy bevdya, is the paradise of bubonic plague still on the map? After
indoor plumbing was installed, I guess the non-daroowala holy people of
Surat now need cartographic assistance - Bharuch district is missing in
the map made by the Surat collectorate. :-) :-)
Is Bharuch part of Pakistan or has it been ceded to China in exchange
for Tawang? Wonder what caused this snafu? Daroo (which would be hooch
in a dry state :-)), or people simply out to lunch (likely), or maybe, a
"3m-m=3m" conspiracy? So issue a "fartwa" to rectify the situation
immediately, and if the geographically challenged bevdas of Surat cannot
do it, declare a cartographic "jihad," nayinte mon.
Not गेलो ?

What does बेव्डा कुठे घेलो mean?
You know what बेव्डा ~ बेवडा means, I suppose.
कुठे = where
घेलो if it is Malayalam influenced गेलो, then "did he go, has gone" etc
No. ThevaDi means bastard in Tamil.

I haven't heard of these. why not kidhar and gaya?
बेवडा of बम्बैया हीन्दी (and in Marathi, Gujarati, and every other
language of Mumbai) means tipsy, drunkard.

कीधर गया would be Hindi, कुठे गेलो is Marathi
Oooops, my bad. Must have kept the shift key pressed when I typed all of
this in a hurry - had to catch a flight to get to business meeting. That
should be गेलो and not घेलो. But looks like Bevdabhai has not bashed out a
one-liner response. :-)
Very likely a case of hyper-correction as speakers of Dravidian
languages are not accustomed to aspirates.
Not really. Tamil has no aspirates, Malayalam does have them, and they
are used too. :-)
If you are writing significant amount of Malayalam in devanagari you
can check if typing instead of one the other would become testable for
you. Every language has sound opposition (phonemic opposition) some of
which bear heavy load and some dont. Also the aspirates of Malayalam,
did they develope in the language or are of the borrowed words from
Sanskrit, is an issue.
I believe Malayalam is closer to Tamil than other two main Dravidian
languages.
In terms of grammar and vocabulary, yes, Malayalam is closer to Tamil.
However, unlike Tamil, Malayalam has been significantly influenced by
Sanskrit, and letters for aspirates were added to accommodate Sanskrit
words. I think this was around the 12th-13th century. Anyways, in its
present form Malayalam is closer (in terms of aspirated consonants) to
Telugu and Kannada, I think.
The Malayalam in Devanagari is an interesting exercise, but the
Devanagari lipi does not have some of the letters that correspond to
Malayalam ones. Maybe one can use diacritics to do the job.
Not being a linguist, I'll defer to Ranjit on this issue. He probably
has deeper insights into _both_ Tamil and Malayalam.
