Tarique's humble days begin in jail
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Tarique Rahman, who is used to a
posh lifestyle, passed his first day in jail hospital very ordinarily.
He was sent to Dhaka Central Jail on Monday night from where he was
shifted to the jail hospital for treatment.
"The civil surgeon of the jail hospital will visit Tarique today and
then the next course of steps regarding his treatment will be taken,"
Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Shamsul Haider Siddique told The
Daily Star yesterday.
Sources said a medical team, led by the civil surgeon of the jail
hospital, will examine his heath condition and as per their suggestion
it will be decided whether Tarique will be in the hospital or in the
cell with other general inmates.
Tarique had two pieces of bread with vegetables for his breakfast
yesterday. He was served with a piece of Pangas fish at lunch with
rice and pulses. Sources said the menu for the dinner was the same.
Meanwhile, Tarique's remand for interrogation in an extortion case has
been challenged in the High Court.
Azizur Rahman Dulu, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, yesterday filed a
writ petition challenging the legality of the remand, granted by the
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court, Dhaka, on March 8, according to
the UNB.
The writ petition is likely to be moved before a regular High Court
division bench on Sunday (Mar 18), court sources said.
The law enforcers secured a four-day remand for interrogation in an
extortion case when Tarique, senior joint-secretary general of BNP,
was produced in the CMM's Court on March 8. He was arrested on March 7
midnight from his mother's cantonment residence.
The home secretary, the inspector general of police (IGP), the DMP
commissioner, the officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station and the
investigation officer (IO) of the case have been made respondents.
When contacted, a senior counsel for the BNP told the news agency that
they knew nothing about the move.
Tarique's wife Zobaida Rahman, his younger brother Arafat Rahman and
another person met him at the deputy jail superintendent's office at
5:45pm. They were there for 20 minutes, jail sources said.

..... The prison officials said Tarique had been taken to the jail
hospital at about 11:30pm Monday, but nothing serious was found with
his health during primary check-up the next morning.
Tarique will have another check-up and if no major problem is
detected, he would soon be shifted to a cell, said a high prison
official. .....
..... Before taking him to hospital, the authorities registered the
name, address and belongings of Tarique.
He was arrested at his mother's house in the Dhaka cantonment early
March 8 and was charged with extorting Tk 1 crore in a case filed by a
businessman.
Haider said neither any family members of Tarique, nor his party
men inquired of him on Tuesday. 'He can get food such as fruit and
bread from his family.' .....
..... As Tarique is an ordinary prisoner, he is provided with
ordinary food. 'An ordinary prisoner gets two pieces of bread with
potato and tomato fry and rice, dal and fish for lunch and dinner.'
He, however, can get cake, biscuit and bread from the prison's
cafeteria for money.
'We cannot give him special treatment as he, as per the prison
code, is an ordinary prisoner,' Haider said, adding only the court can
give him division.
'His status does not fall under any of the 18 categories mentioned
in the jail code as per the warrant of precedence for getting
division.'
As Tarique is an important politician and son of a former president
and a former prime minister, round-the-clock security has been put in
place for him in the prison hospital.
The Gulshan police was, meanwhile, verifying the case filed against
him and the evidences and information they received on Tarique's
overseas bank accounts and extorting Tk 1 crore from the Al-Amin
Construction Foundation of Ahmed Amin.
During interrogation, the police claimed, Tarique divulged some
important information which indicated his involvement in the
extortion.
The police were framing the charge sheet against Tarique. If he is
proven guilty, he would be imprisoned up to five years. .....
