After a recent dance-theater performance of Chitra Divakaruni's "Arranged
Marriage" near Boston, MA, the artists and the audience held a brief
discussion.
During the discussion, it became clear that larger numbers of South Asian
Americans were getting involved in the arts and literature in North America.
Some of these artists/writers took traditional approaches, while others
explored innovative fusions with other cultures.
At the same time, there was NO unique forum in which these artists or
students could publicize their events, solicit advice, seek teachers, or
contact event sponsors. The forums that currently exist are either too
broad (general news, etc.) or too narrow (focused on the culture of one
particular subgroup in South Asia).
Here, then, is an effort to bridge the information gap between
artists/writers, audiences/readers, event sponsors, and anyone else
interested in the cultural productions of S. Asians and S. Asian-Americans
in North America. Please subscribe to this list, and post any information
related to South Asian Art and Literature in North America. Since this is a
moderated discussion group, we can avoid cluttering our mailboxes with
irrelevant posts/replies.
