JAMAAT WON THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION POLITICS?

The Weekly BIKRAM of October 7-13, 1991, issue, (p. 7) Dhaka reports
a very interesting development in Bangladesh politics. This is
a surprize for many observers in Bangladesh politics. Here is the brief of the report:

1. The presidential candidate from A.L., Justice Badrul H. Chowdhury
went to Professor Golam Azam, defacto Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh,
(he lost his citizenship for his unequivocal support for Pakistan in 1971
and still holds a Pakistani passport but has been living in Dhaka since
1978) for his support in the election.

Professor Azam did not assure him of his party support but advised him
to continue his efforts to serve the nation. Justice Chowdhury expressed
his concern for not giving Professor Azam's citizenship back. He also
criticized those who oppose his citizenship.

2. Mr. Abdur Rahman Biswas, the then BNP nominee for presidency also
went to Professor Azam's residence and asked for the support of Jamaat
PM's in the parliaments. He also expressed similar sympathy for the
the hidden Ameer of Jamaat.

More exciting............

3. The leaders of A.L., an arch political enemy of Jamaat, and those
of Jamaat had a four-hour closed door meeting in the parliament house.
This may be a turning event in the politics of Bangladesh for the
A.L. acceptance of Jamaat in exchange for it's support in the anti-BNP
move of A.L. Jamaat not being able to get its return from the BNP for
its support in the early stages of the formation of BNP Government
might have extended its support for anti-BNP A.L.
Both parties agreed to continue talking to improve relationship.
