What happened? 51 is an age for an accident not natural.
Sorry to hear. It is a difficult year. On a positive side - he taught
students, he left himself embedded in many many minds. In some sense -
made himself immortal.
VM.
One of the articles about his demise says that he died in his sleep.
Another one says that he died of heart problems. Recent photographs, e.g.
http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiedosto:Tapani_Hietaniemi.jpg, clearly
indicate that he was having serious weight problems.

I am just upset that brilliant people neglect "home cleaning" so that we
lose them, it doesn't take much effort - no revolutionary methods:
if you cannot quit smoking - do it slow - e.g. forbid yourself smoking
in the house - only outside, or at least 15-20 minutes after you woke up
and between. This is a psychological escape route - "I do not get rid I
just introduce rules." This way one can cut smoking in half or down to 1/3.
Drinking? No drink before Friday or if heavily burdened till 5 p.m. -
beer, till 9 p.m. liquor. Try Valeriana extract instead in the morning.
Fat food? - For two weeks a run on "green" - just two week and after
that tons of fats whatever.
It is just not fair that we lose brilliant minds to such neglect to
our body machine modest requests.
And of course exercise - till you really sweat. No heroism again, if it
starts really hurt - stop.

and also so many that we have lost to that ever present scourge of the arts:
depression > abuse > suicide.
