Bashir eyes Australia for Islamic state
The suspected spiritual leader of outlawed terrorist group Jemaah
Islamiah reportedly preached in Australia about setting up a local
Islamic state.
In an audio-recording obtained by The Sydney Morning Herald, Abu Bakar
Bashir reportedly told Sydney Muslims he supported jihad - meaning
struggle - to bring Islamic law to the world. He also backed conflict
and war in defence of faith, the newspaper reported.
Bashir reportedly said on the tape living in a non-believing nation
lowered the Muslim faith.
"The Islamic faithful in Australia must endeavour to bring about an
Islamic state in Australia, even if it is 100 years from now," Bashir
reportedly told the gathering.
However, the paper said the tape did not directly refer to any
terrorist actions.
It's believed the recording was made at an evening prayer meeting at
an unknown Sydney location in 1993.
If found to be genuine, the audio tape will be the first credible
evidence of Bashir's Australian statements.
