The Newark Museum ( New Jersey) is opening an exhibition
"A Brush With History: Contemporary Artists and the
Chinese Tradition,'[1] which features contemporary art
made by three artist who were born in China but later
moved to the USA ( Zhang Hongtu, Er Tai Gao, and
Yun-Fei Ji ) and one American Born Chinese Nina Kuo.
Zhang Hongtu reinterprets classi 16th Chinese paintings
using 19th century French/Dutch Impressionist styles.
Yun-Fei Ji uses traditional Chinese painting styles
to portray modern subjects, e.g. modern warefare.
Nina Kuo's work mocks China Trade chinoiserie, e.g.
transposing a 19th century Chinese figure with a
cell phone. Er Tai Gao is showing four pieces -
three are white-on-black calligraphic version of
poems which tell personal biographical stories
in verse in the style mimicking that found in
a Buddhist cave near Dun Huang. The exhibit which
has only 14 works. The exhibit is being held from
April 23 2003 to July 6 2003. The show's curator is
Carmen Ramos.
