One-man art show offers visitors an eyeful

THE EYES have it at Fremont's municipal art gallery.
What strikes the visitor are the eyes of the animal portraits by
Raymond Hu, a 23-year-old from Alamo.
The eyes of the lion, fox, pelican, mongoose, kangaroo, frog, fish, dove,
monkey et al are variously mournful, bright, surprised, intense, deep,
alert, noble, scary and even cross-eyed.
`Amazing. He has an amazing ability to draw animal forms,'' Mercury
News photographer Ron Burda informed me.
`He draws like an angel,'' said Kim Bach, the gallery director. (By the
way, this is her last show. She's off to become a curator at the San
Francisco library.)
Hu's one-man show at the Olive Hyde Art Gallery runs through next
Sunday. Forty-five of his paintings show his immense range over the
past nine years.

Hu started studying Chinese brush painting with artist Lampo Leong
nine years ago, says his bio at the gallery.
