Asian art

Having seen the recent message about Asian Americans not being
interested in "traditional" Asian Art, I was wondering if some of
you out there could name some contemporary Asian or Asian American
artists worth checking out? We are avid fans of Asian art, and
always looking for new names.

Had you asked two months ago, I would have been hard-pressed to name any
Asian American artists, but while on vacation in Boston, I stumbled on an
exhibition at the MIT media center entitled "Asia---America: Identities
in Asian American Art." It was fabulous! I'm not sure if it's a touring
exhibit or not, but perhaps you can check out these names at other shows.
Each one is worth seeing, some, of course, better than others, imho.

Yong Soon Min is a great Korean American feminist artist.
Theresa Hak Kyung Cha is a Korean American feminist artist / writer.
She wrote an important book called Dictee, and it's a mix of poetry, art, literature, etc.

The show is a traveling show that will be at Blaffer Gallery,
University of Houston from June 8 - July 28. The curator of the show is named
Margo Machida and is currently teaching the class based on this show here at
SUNY Buffalo. I am currently taking the class. I also caught the show in MIT.
It's a good show with some interesting works.

For those of you interested in Asian art, I've noticed a new gallery
featuring Asian art on the world wide web that you might be interested in.
They feature mostly Chinese art (hopefully they'll diversify into other
Asian art soon) but the artwork is quite impressive, using the "Zhong Sai
Hua" style of painting (Heavy colored art).
