Subject: Smithsonian APA Studies program exhibit of
Chinese American history needs volunteer docents

The Smithsonian APA Studies Program will stage a 4800 sq.
ft. exhibit of Chinese American history from May
to September 2001.

The exhibit is partly based on the book "On Golden Mountain:
The 100-year Odyssey of My Chinese American Family" by Lisa
See. It covers the wider experience of Chinese in the
American West. The exhibit is the largest exhibit on
Chinese American history ever assembled.

The APA Studies Program is recruiting volunteer docents who will
conduct
short guided tours for visitors. There will be seven evening training
and orientation sessions, taking place on February 12 & 26, March 12 &
26, April 9 & 23, and May 14. Docents are asked to serve a minimum of
two three-hour shifts per month. They are especially interested in
retired persons to serve during the weekdays.

More information on the exhibit and the volunteer program is available
at www.apa.si.edu.

Three OCA members volunteered to serve as coordinators.
Please call them
before January 15 if you have any questions.

On Gold Mountain

This exhibition tells the story of the Chinese in America through
the six-generation odyssey of a Chinese American family in Los
Angeles. On Gold Mountain: A Chinese American Experience
explores immigration, the transformation of Chinese immigrants
into Chinese Americans, the many facets of Chinese American
identity, and methods of uncovering family and community
history. On Gold Mountain is based on a book by Lisa See,
whose family has a long and prominent history in Los Angeles.
Members of the See family immigrated from China to California
during the construction of the transcontinental railroad,
established a successful antiques business, opened an art
gallery and restaurant, became furniture designers and
manufacturers, and helped build Los Angeles' Chinatown.
Looking closely at a real family provides insight into
the history of Chinese Americans.

Are you interested in Chinese American history?

Volunteer to be a docent at the Smithsonian!

The Smithsonian Program for Asian Pacific American Studies
is now preparing for the exhibition, On Gold Mountain:
A Chinese American Experience. This exhibition comes
from the Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los
Angeles and will be at the Arts & Industries Building
from May to October 2001. In order to encourage
community participation in this exhibit, we are
creating a volunteer docent program. We are recruiting
docents for two types of positions:

1) Docents for Gold Mountain will participate in a rigorous
training program from February to May 2001. There will be
eight two-hour evening seminars during which docents will
study the material covered in the exhibit through
discussions with Asian American scholars, documentary
films, and reading materials. Seminars will also cover
public speaking and tips for working with the public.
Utilizing training materials, each docent will design
his or her own tour for the exhibit. Once the exhibit
opens, each docent will give at least two tours per month.

We are looking for volunteer docents with the following qualities:
- Interest in working with the public,
- Strong interest in Asian American history or Chinese
American history,
- Daytime availability from February through October.

Benefits of volunteering as a docent include a 20% discount at
Smithsonian gift shops and dining facilities and limited parking
privileges.

2) Behind-the-Scenes volunteers will work on public programs and
special events surrounding the exhibit. Those may include film
screenings, lectures, craft demonstrations, and receptions.
There is no training for Behind-the-Scenes volunteers.

Behind-the-Scenes volunteers should have the following qualities:
- Strong interpersonal skills,
- Good organizational skills,
- Availability on selected weekends and evenings May through October.

Behind-the-Scenes volunteering is a great way to be involved
in the local community while supporting Asian Pacific
American activities at the Smithsonian.

If you would like to participate in this project, visit our website at
www.apa.si.edu for instructions on how to apply.
