What I found interesting is that here in San Francisco Mr. Nice Guy is playing
at an AMC theatre!!!!! And with Sammo Hung directing. So hopefully

Jackie is finishing up the HK part of his first major Hollywood
production, Rush Hour, it looks like it's going to be released late
98/early 99. Who is China Chow?
"Mr. Nice Guy opens in mid-March. Meanwhile, Jackie is shooting
Miramax’s Rush Hour. In Rush Hour, Chan plays a security guard who teams
up with a policeman, played by Chris Tucker, to save a Chinese
ambassador's daughter (China Chow) who has been kidnapped by
terrorists."
A couple sidenotes here. John Woo is working on bringing Michael
Wang(Russel Wang's older bro) to Hollywood, he's supposed to star in a
TV movie first(sorry I don't know the English title). A young Chinese
director from Taiwan, Tang Ji Lee(what's his English name?) who is
friends with Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat, was said to have finished a
Hollywood production and touring the media. Does anyone know what's the
name of the movie? Chinese title roughly translates into Mr. Wacko.

Japanese Anime (e.g. Evangelion, Dragonball Z) and Japanese Cinema Stuff in certain

True, but while this place carries anime, it also carries some anime
from the 60's and 70's which you have to admit was pretty crude compared
to some (not all mind you) American toons. Present day American toons
however can't be mentioned in the same room much less the same breath with

To be honest, I prefer anime on TV shows. It simply takes longer to
develope a complex and interesting character with animation. Partly because
we bring some interest in an actor to a film, but mostly because animation
isn't as expressive as the human face. I find I usually don't get attached
to characters until the fourth or fifth hour on average.

The first one is called "Monkey God wrecks havoc in the heavens" (produced
in the 50s???) and the second one is known as "Nazha wreaks havoc in the
seas" (produced in the late seventies/early eighties). The "girl" is
actually Nazha, the Third Prince in the Canons of the Gods (collection of
ancient pre-Buddhist influenced Chinese fairy tales). Both are from Shanghai
studios. If you observe the up and coming Disney feature, Mulan, the
characters design actually look very similar. I heard that Disney has send a
team of artiste to Shanghai Studios to get some inspiration.

Is Bakshi Japanese? I only saw the first 5 minutes of it, what's it
about? What's Heavy Metal? This really isn't my area, the last
Japanese anime I saw was The Ninja Scroll which I thought was pretty

All the foreign toons I saw as a child were dubbed, most of them was
pretty good as I remember, though sometimes I could hear the muffled
original dialogue in the background.

Nazha ... = Ne Zha Nao Hai
You are right, now I remember that there was a deer in Ne Zha Nao Hai,
but that's not the one I had in mind. I don't remember which studio
produced it, probably Shanghai as it produced most of the noteworthy
cartoon movies in China.
It has a little girl, searching for a deer(?) in the moutains, done in
traditional Chinese landscape painting style with no dialogue. It's a
delectable bite size piece full of surreal serenity and breath-taking
elegance.
I've seen only two drawings from Mulan so far, one where she's in a
dress looks authentic enough, the other where she's in army gear looks
too butch. I'm glad they did consult the Chinese, they were going to
have Mulan kiss her dad goodbye which would've been obscene in that time
period.

Actually Bakshi's American. It could be said that Fritz was borderline
soft porn, but what about Japanese series like Urotsuki Doji, Countdown
and La Blue Girl which are just plain graphic porn. The differences I
think between anime and American cartoons are basicly the quality of anime
animation is considerably better and the voice actors (in anime) have to
attend special school. They work harder and it shows. K-Bar

Based on a comic book, i think it's basically different cyber-punk/horror/
sci-fi/fantasy animation done to heavy metal music of the 70s (and early
80s?) I never saw it; I was too young to go see a R-rated flick at the
time, and I just never got the motivation to see it now.

Blame that on the Chinese studio who dubbed it. I've heard normally
studios rip away the "voicetrack" and replace it with a new one. But don't
take me for that one, that's just what I've heard.
