2. Management Committee for Organizing 56th
Anniversary Union Day meets
Yangon, 9 Jan - The Management Committee for Organizing the 56th
Anniversary Union Day held the first coordination meeting at the
Pyithu Hluttaw Building on Pyay Road at 1 pm today.
Chairman of the Management Committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace
and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe
delivered an address.
He said the State Peace and Development Council formed the Management
Committee for Organizing the 56th Anniversary Union Day on 24 December
2002 for holding the 56th Anniversary Union Day for 2003 with
political essence. Similarly, the Management Committee formed the 12
sub-committees for successfully carrying out the tasks as in the
previous year. Some matters of the management tasks such as
accommodation, reception, transport, security, etc for the Union Day
delegates will be discussed at the meeting. As Myanmar is a Union
nation in which many national races reside, the national unity is the
life blood of the Union of Myanmar.
Only if the national unity is firm will the Union perpetually exist.
The members of the Management Committee have much experience in
performing the tasks of organizing the Union Day annually. It is
necessary to make strenuous efforts for convenience and comfort of the
Union Day delegates. The efforts without weakness contribute toward
the national unity. In doing so, thrifty measures are to be taken; the
plans for the sub-committees are to be implemented; difficulties in
works are also to be reported to the Management Committee in time; and
collective efforts are to be made for successful holding of the 56th
Anniversary Union Day.
Then, Secretary of the Management Committee Director-General U Myint
Thein of Pyithu Hluttaw Office reported on assignment of duties to 12
sub-committees and tasks of them. Chairmen and officials of the
Sub-committees reported on their tasks. After hearing the reports, the
commander gave necessary instructions.

3. Yangon Consumer Products Expo 2003 opened
Yangon, 9 Jan - With the permission of the Ministry of Commerce, a
ceremony to open Yangon Consumer Products Expo 2003, organized by
Dragon Exhibition Ltd, took place at Yangon Trade Centre in Mingala
Taungnyunt Township this morning.
Director-General of the Directorate of Trade U Nyunt Aye and Managing
Director of Dragon Exhibition Ltd U Aung Aung formally opened the
exhibition. Then, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, officials
and guests viewed round the exhibition. On display at the exhibition
are cosmetics, household goods, garments, plastic wares, foodstuff,
electric appliances, construction materials, paper and stationery,
packaging materials, light machines, installation materials, skin care
lotion, and optical instruments, traditional medicines.
The exhibition will be kept open daily free of charge from 9 am to 7
pm till 12 January.

5. Myanmar will have better opportunity
to penetrate AFTA
Yangon, 9 Jan - Myanmar exports will have better opportunity to
penetrate the markets of the six original ASEAN countries at zero
tariff, as it has been permitted to enter the ASEAN Free Trade Area
five years later than the six countries, stated the National AFTA Unit
today.
The AFTA Unit of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic
Development also stated that beginning 2002, the six countries have
already reduced their tariffs on imports from other ASEAN nations
within the range from zero per cent to five percent. By the year 2010,
the six countries’ tariffs on all kinds of goods will reach
zero.
As for Myanmar, it will reduce its tariffs to the level between zero
per cent and 5 per cent in 2008. In 2015, except from important goods,
the country will impose zero per-cent tariff on all the remaining
imports from the ASEAN countries. The tariff for important goods will
also reach zero per cent by the year 2018.
The National AFTA Unit is responsible for implementing the ASEAN
economic cooperation project covering the duty to fix the date and
period for the ASEAN Free Trade programme.

7. Minister inspects health facilities
in Magway Division
Yangon, 9 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected
progress in construction of Institute of Medicine (Magway) Project in
Magway on 8 January.
At the briefing hall, Rector Dr Than Myint of the institute reported
on organizational set-up, appointment of staff, attendance of
students, academic matters, construction of the lecture halls and
greening tasks of the institute's campus. Deputy Director-General Dr
Maung Maung Win of Medical Science Department and Project Manager U
Soe Win Than of Asia World Co Ltd gave supplementary reports.
The minister then inspected the construction tasks and gave necessary
instructions. Next, the minister viewed the students learning at the
lecture halls, the canteen and hostels of teachers and staff quarters.
Afterwards, the minister proceeded to the construction site of the
Teaching Hospital (200-bed). Managing Director U Ye Tun of Myanma
Industrial Construction Service reported on arrangements for building
the hospital. Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Health Department gave
a supplementary report.
At University of Community Health (Magway), Rector Professor Dr Soe
Naung reported to the minister on construction of No 4 lecture hall,
academic matters, greening of the university campus, growing of
flowery plants, administration matters and future tasks. Deputy
Director-General Dr Maung Maung Win gave a supplementary report. Then,
the minister inspected Minbu District Hospital. Medical Superintendent
Dr Tin Ohn Kyaw reported on upgrading of the teaching hospital,
academic, hospital and staff matters.
After hearing the supplementary reports by officials, the minister
fulfilled the requirements. Then, the minister inspected units of the
hospital and gave necessary instructions. Then, the minister and party
arrived at Tawseint Village Rural Health Care unit in Salin. Officials
reported on construction for turning the rural health care unit into
the field teaching unit of the University of Community Health, lecture
halls and hostels for teachers and students.
Next, the minister went to Pwintbyu Hospital. The minister saw over
patient wards, the operation theatre, the delivery room, the X-ray
room, the special leprosy unit and the medical store at the hospital.

8. H & T Minister inspects warehouses
Yangon, 9 Jan - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Thein Zaw,
arrived at Beverage Division's warehouse and vehicles division of
Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services in Botahtaung Township yesterday
afternoon.
Deputy General Manager U Thein Lwin and officials reported on
warehousing to the minister. Later, they inspected warehouses at Thida
jetty in Pazundaung Township and warehouses in Thaketa Township. They
then saw over the Tour Guide Training School on Bosunpet Street and
Yatha Bakery of Be-verage Division on Mahabandoola Street in Pabedan
Township and gave instructions to officials concerned.

9. A meeting on TV programmes held
Yangon, 9 Jan - Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein
delivered an address at the coordination meeting to show good Myanmar
movies and videos in the TV Myanmar programmes at the meeting hall of
Myanma Radio and Television today.
The producer may contact Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise to take out
the honorarium after telecasting the respective movies and videos
within one month.

10. Commander attends School Family Day in Sagaing
Yangon, 9 Jan - The Sagaing Division School Family Day for the
academic year 2002-2003 was held at No 2 Basic Education High School
in Sagaing on 3 January morning.
Maj-Gen Soe Naing and U Ohn Kyaw opened the ceremony. And then, the
commander and those present viewed round the exhibitions in the
compound of the school.
Then, the commander and the division education officer delivered
speeches at the prize presentation ceremony at Ahthinkhaya Hall of the
school.
Next, the commander and wife and officials presented prizes to
outstanding students for the academic year 2002-2003 and the ceremony
came to an end.

11. Pathein Education College opens
teacher training course
Yangon, 9 Jan - An opening ceremony of the teacher training course of
Pathein Education College was held at the college yesterday morning.
The commander gave instructions on trying to become education staff
the State can rely on. The principal of the college also spoke on the
occasion. A total of 546 students are attending the second year
classes, and 129 students the first year of classes.

12. Cornerstones laid for two-storey
monastic building
Yangon, 9 Jan - Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council
Chairman Triangle Region Command Commander Brig-Gen Khin Zaw attended
the ceremony to lay corner stones of a new building for Sila Dhamma
Kontha Tawya in Kengtung held at the construction site on 4 January
morning.
The ceremony was opened with three-time recitation of Namo Tassa and
the presiding Sayadaw administered the Five Precepts. Then, members of
the Sangha recited parittas.
After laying the corner stones at the designated places, offertories
were presented to the members of the Sangha and the ceremony came to a
close.
The 75 feet by 45 feet two-storey building of the monastery will be
built at a cost of K 50 million contributed by wellwishers.
In the afternoon, the commander attended the prize-presenting ceremony
of the Commander’s Shield Volleyball Contest held at the State
Stadium in Kengtung. After the final matches, the commander and wife
and the deputy commander presented prizes to the winners in
men’s division and women’s division. Altogether nine
men’s volleyball teams and eight women’s volleyball teams
took part in the contest.

13. Entries invited to 58th Anniversary
Armed Forces Day Commemorative
Photo Competition
Yangon, 9 Jan - The 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commemorative
Literary and Photo Competition Organizing Work Committee has already
announced that it will hold the photo competition.
The titles of colour photo competitions are ‘Developing
Myanmar’ and ‘Preserving Cultural Heritage’ and the
four entries can be presented for each title. Entries must be print
photos by the size of at least 10 by 12 inches. Those who won the
first, second and third prizes in the previous years will be
categorized into a separated group and there will be a great chance
for new competitions. Data and captions are to be described in a
separate sheet of paper and to be attached to the entries. Entries
must be won creation and must not be prize-winning works in any other
competitions. Handsome prizes will be presented to first, second and
third prize winners as well as consolation prizes winners of each
competition. The consolation prizes will be presented at the
Anniversary Armed Forces ceremonies at the respective military
commands. Entries are to be sent to Director U Tun Min of the
Information and Public Relations Department on Pansodan Street,

the work committee for the organizing of poem and arts competition led
by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt (Htila Sitthu) as chairman
announced that the painting and sculpture competition will be held
with the following rules.
The painting competition will be divided into six categories the first
for pre-primary school level, the second for junior primary school
level (kindergarten to second grade), the third for senior primary
school level (third grade and fourth grade), the fourth for middle
school level (fifth grade to eighth grade), the fifth for high school
level (ninth grade to technological and agricultural high schools) and
the sixth for professional level. There will be only one category in
the sculpture competition, the wood sculpture and the plaster
sculpture at professional level. Anyone may take part in both.
In the painting competition from kindergarten to high school levels,
the size of the entry must be 15" x 20", and 20" x 30" for
professional level. Name, NRC No, class, school, township, date of
birth, father’s name, address must be expressed on the back of
the painting, with three 1.5" x 2"-size photos attached. For students,
the endorsement of the schoolhead is needed.
For the sculpture competition, the height of the entry must not be
over 36" and its circumference not longer than 24". At the foot of the
sculpture, name, NRC No, date of birth, father’s name, address
must be shown, with three 1.5" x 2"-size photos attached and send the
entry right to Tatmadaw Convention Centre, U Wisaya Road, between 1
and 3 March 2003.
All the entries, painting or sculpture, must reflect the twelve
objectives of the State, the objectives of 58th Anniversary Armed
Forces Day and the twelve fine traditions of the Tatmadaw.
Entries of both professional levels should be sent to Secretary,
Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon (Central), Pabedan
Township, Yangon, not later than 1 March 2003 or to Secretary,
Subcommittee for the Holding of Painting and Sculpture Competition and
Exhibition, U Wisaya Road, Tatmadaw Convention Centre, Yangon, between
1 and 3 March 2003. Entries of students all over Myanmar should be
sent to Development Division, Education Planning and Training
Department, Natmauk Street, Bahan Township, Yangon, not later than
15th February 2003.
Apart from the entries for both competition, other paintings and
sculptures may be sent to be displayed at the exhibition to be opened
in honour of the 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day. Those paintings
and sculptures must also featured the twelve objectives of the State,
the objectives of 58th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and the twelve
fine traditions of the Tatmadaw and should be sent directly to
Tatmadaw Convention Centre, U Wisaya Road, between 1 and 5 March 2003.

15. Rural water supply inaugurated in Muse
Yangon, 9 Jan - As a gesture of hailing the 55th Anniversary
Independence Day, ceremony to inaugurate the water supply project
conducted by Muse Township Development Affairs Committee in Nammati
village took place in the village on 28 December.
Secretary of Muse District Peace and Development Council Maj Kyi Myint
and Executive Officer of the DAC U Myo Naing Aung opened the ceremony.
The project was conducted with the contribution of K 1,550,000 by the
DAC and K 120,000 by the village people. As a result, altogether over
40 households including the basic education primary school of the
village can be supplied with water.

16. Development tasks in Nyaungshwe inspected
Yangon, 9 Jan - Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council
Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Myint attended the
ceremony to put back into service Phaungdawbyan gravel road in
Nyaungshwe on 2 January noon.
Nyaungshwe Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Maung
Maung Soe and Township Executive Officer of Development Committee U
Win Ko Ko formally opened the road. The road, 3,150 feet long and 12
feet wide was built at a cost of over K 2.7 million.
In the afternoon, the commander inspected progress in extension of the
114 feet long and 89 feet wide Aungmingala Dhammayon at Kangyi
Pariyatti Sarthintaik in Nyaungshwe. Chairman of Taunggyi District
Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ye Tun Sein conducted the
commander round the construction site.
Then, the commander went to Pawritha Village in Nyaungshwe Township
and inspected digging of fish ponds by private entrepreneurs.
Next, the commander arrived at Nanthida Agriculture and Livestock
Breeding Farm of the command headquarters. Farm in-charge Maj Maung
Maung Lay reported on arrangements for opening the agriculture and
livestock breeding training course No 1/2003, cultivation of annual
and perennial crops, paddy and seasonal crops in the farm and plans to
breed poultry, pig, cattle and fish on a commercial scale.
Nyaungshwe Township Chairman U Maung Maung Soe presented 100 scythes
for cutting the grass to Maj Maung Maung Lay.
Then, the commander inspected the training hall and hostels of
Nanthida Camp, livestock breeding and cultivation tasks and digging of
fish ponds.

17. Independence Day Exhibition continues
Yangon, 9 Jan - The 55th Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition
continued at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road in Dagon
Township from 9 am to 5 pm today.
Departmental staff, members of Hline Township USDA, and teachers and
students from Nos 1 and 2 BEHSs, BEMS-5 and BEPS-2 of Yankin Township,
BEHS of Kyauktada Township, BEHS-1 of Dagon Township, and BEPS of
Haingku village in Hlegu Township, totalling about 5,000 people
visited the exhibition.

18. National races from Taninthayi Division tour Yangon
Yangon, 9 January - Under the arrangement of the Work Committee for
Development of Border Areas and National Races, national races from
Myitta Taungthonlon Region in Dawei Township, Taninthayi Division,
accompanied by Assistant Director of the Ministry of Progress of
Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Capt Nyi Nyi
Lwin and officials, visited Shwedagon Pagoda and Maha Wizaya Pagoda
this morning and made cash donation.
They then went to Union Solidarity and Development Association
Headquarters and Head of HQ Daw Aye Myint conducted them round the HQ.
They also visited Myanma Radio and Television (MRTV) on Pyay Road and
studied the broadcasting and transmission services.

19. News from the Districts
Student sports competition in Taninthayi
Taninthayi Division organized the student sports competition at Myoma
sports grounds in Myeik on 21 December. After Commander Brig-Gen Tha
Aye had delivered an address on the occasion, education officer of
Taninthayi Division U Thaung Sein opened the competition. Next,
students gave entertainment with aerobic exercises and physical
exercises.
Later, U-13 student football teams from Myeik Township and Kawthoung
Township played a match.
Trade fair and market festival to be held in Mawlamyine
With the aim of directly distributing the consumer goods to the public
at reasonable prices in accord with the economic objectives laid down
by the State, Mon State Peace and Development Council permitted a
trade fair and market festival to be held in the compound of the
four-storey Myaing Yadana market in Mawlamyine.
Arrangements are under way to hold it grandly from 12 to 16 February.
On sale at the trade fair and market festival will be various kinds of
consumer goods exhibited by Yangon businessmen and local businessmen.
The trade fair will be kept open daily and admission is free.

20. Minister opens high-class tennis court in Muse
Yangon, 9 Jan - Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman Minister for Sports
Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint made a speech at the opening ceremony of the
high-class tennis court in Muse, Shan State (North) on 7 January.
The minister, together with tennis players from the People’s
Republic of China and Myanmar, posed for a documentary photo.
Then, the Myanmar-China (Yunnan) friendly tennis matches were held.
The new high-class court was built at a cost of over K 79.4 million
under the patronage of Myanmar Tennis Federation President.
On 5 January, the minister arrived at Kutkai and met township sports
committee members and staff of the Sports and Physical Education
Department and athletes. He inspected the township sports grounds and
stadium.
The minister, on the next day, inspected the sports grounds and
gymnasiums in Muse and chosen site for new sports grounds. In meeting
with the township sports committee members, social organization
members, sports enthusiasts and athletes, he explained measures for
upgrading of the sports standard of Myanmar.
After presenting sports equipment to the officials, the minister
viewed the gymnasium and sports grounds. Then, the minister crossed
the Shweli River and paid homage to Holan monastery Presiding Sayadaw
Bhaddanta Vayama in Manhee.
He inspected construction of Shwedagon replica pagoda there and
presented sports equipment to officials at the hall of Township
Administration Department (Branch) in Manhee.
In meeting the district/township level departmental officials, social
organization members and athletes, he made a speech and presented
sports equipment at the township hall in Muse.
Yesterday, he inspected upgrading of State Sports Grounds in Lashio
and inspected the sports grounds in PyinOoLwin.
In Mandalay, the minister inspected construction of staff housing for
SPED staff, gymnasium and gave instructions.

21. MGF President's Trophy Golf Tournament continues
Yangon, 9 Jan - The second day events of Myanmar Professional Golfers
Association and Myanmar Golf Federation President's Trophy 2002-2003
men's and women's golf tournaments jointly organized by Myanmar
Professional Golfers Association and MGF and sponsored by Rothmans of
Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, continued at Hanthawaddy Golf and Country
Club in Bago Township at 8 am today.
After the third day 18-hole event, Min Naing (Srixon) led the event
with 210 strokes, followed by defending champion Soe Kyaw Naing
(Wilson) with 211, Aung Win (YCDC) with 219, Myint Swe (Rapier) with
220 in the Professional Golfers Division. In the third day event of
the Men's Amateur Division, Zaw Zin Win secured the first place with
218 strokes. Zaw Zaw Latt took the second place with 219, and Myo Min
Aung and Aung Aung Kyaw shared the third place with 225 each. After
the first day of 18-hole handicap event in Women's Amateur Division,
Khin Thu Thu and Aye Aye San shared the first position with 140
strokes each and Htaik Htaik and Yin Yin Aye the second position with
142 strokes each. Miss Eun Joo of the Republic of Korea took the third
position with 144 strokes.
With the aim to promote the standard of golf in Myanmar, the
tournaments are being co-sponsored by Air Mandalay, Cannon (Accel
International Co Ltd), Wilson, KM Golf Centre, Asia Wealth Bank,
Loi-Hein (Alpine) Purified Drinking Water, Grand Royal Special Reserve
Whisky and Hanthawaddy Golf and Country Club. Han Event Management
took the responsibilities to make the arrangements for the tournament.
The tournaments continue at the same venue at 8 am tomorrow.

22. Heroin 850 gms seized in Muse
Yangon, 9 Jan - A combined team comprising members of the local
intelligence unit and Muse Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on
information, searched a bus with number plate 9Ka/6581 near Namhu
Village on Kyukok-Pangsang-Monekoe Road at 6 pm on 11 December 2002
and arrested passengers Tuam Yin Fa with six heroin bars covered with
condom and 79 heroin bars from the abdomen of Huam Guo Meng, totalling
85 bars of heroin weighing 850 grams.
Muse Police Station filed Tuan Yin Fa, 27, son of U Tuam Yao Yuin of
Longyan, Longlin District, the People’s Republic of China and
Huam Guo Meng, 34, son of Huam Qing Yin of Longlin of PRC under
Sections 15/19(A)/20(B) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances
Law.

23. Stimulant pills seized in Lashio
Yangon, 9 Jan - A combined team comprising members of the local
intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information,
stopped and searched a motorbike with number plates 1Ya/61392 and
seized 80,000 stimulant tablets from Yan Shauk Kwe (a) Ah Kwe, son of
U Yan Shi Tin of Ward 7 of Lashio, and Aik Kya (a) Kaw Lein, son of U
Wa Lein, on the bike on 24 December 2002.
Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances Law.
