Simms advances to Pan American Games boxing quarterfinals action

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina, March 18, 1995 -- Middleweight (165
pounds/75 kg) Ronald Simms of the U.S. Air Force, stationed at
Langley AFB, Va., capped off the second day of boxing competition
by posting a victory over Canada's Peter Pestowka.
The Club Atletico Once Unidos hosted nine bouts during the
evening session. The only U.S. participant was Simms.
Simms, 31, and Pestowka spent the better part of two rounds
feeling each other out before pursuing each other with punches.
Simms made a move in scoring blows late in the second and held on
to the 5-1 vicotry.
In the afternoon session, the two lightest members of the
U.S. Boxing Team were victorious in first round action at the
Club Athletico Once Unidos.
Including Simms' win the U.S. Team upped its overall record
after three sessions of competition to five and one. Light
flyweight (106 pounds/48 kg) Albert Guardado of Topeka, Kan., and
flyweight Eric Morel of Madison, Wis., posted victories in the
earlier session and featherweight (125 pounds/57 kg) Diego
Corrales of Sacramento, Calif., became the first U.S. boxer to
fall in the early stages of the tournament.
Guardado continually pressured Brazil's Jose Guimaraes
throughout their bout en route to a 9-5 victory. The 21-year-old
began the contest slowly before landing successful blows
throughout the final two rounds.
Morel began his bout versus Columbia's Hemel Roldan in a
quick way. He landed a number of hard blows early in the contest
but the Columbian kept pressure on him. The final score of the
bout was 22-2, but was no indication of how hard each boxer
performed in the ring.
Corrales was the first U.S. boxer to face the heavily
favored Cuban contingent. Although Corrales dropped the 18-3
decision to Arnaldo Mesa, he started to land a number of blows at
the end of the second round and into the third.
Tomorrow (March 19) four U.S. boxers will compete -- one in
the afternoon session at 2 p.m. and three in the evening session,
which is set for 8:30 p.m.

sessions.
