Mayor Giuliani has my unstinting support for his battle against the Brooklyn
Musuem's display of anti-religious junk posing as art. The art world is
comprised of the biggest bunch of phonies on the face of God's earth. The
Brooklyn Museum directors have proven this by their display of a portrait of
the Virgin Mary smeared with dung. Anything put on canvass by some jerk with
the mentality of an adolescent rebel and designed to shock decent people is now
to be automatically classified as art. Rudy is justified to go after these
phonies with tooth and nail. This is not a first amendment issue. "He who
pays the piper calls the tune." No one has a right to use public tax money to
subsidize garbage.

Now that the pipsqueaks who run the museum have thrown down the gauntlet by
bringing a court suit, the mayor should change tactics. Instead of just
withholding public financing, he should move to have the museum directors fired
on grounds of incompetence. Do they really mean to tell us that they scoured
the art world in New York City alone, and could find no artists worthy of
exhibition? They had to go abroad to find a show? That in the entire United
States, they have searched and failed to discover another Grandma Moses,
another Winslow Homer, another Sargent? They should be fired for failing to
exert their energies to discover and recognize American artists, before
importing these teen-age minded pornographers.

Question: If an "artist" took a portrait of Martin Luther King and spread
excrement on it, what are the chances that it would be exhibited in a
publicly-funded museum in New York City? And what are the chances that the
editorial page of the New York Times would carry a rousing defense of the right
of a museum to display it?

The Black artist that Mayor Giuliani is trying to Censor and stop New
Yorkers from seeing is a well know award winning artist.
Compare the facts here and then read that bigot TBarksdl wrote below it:

The painting, "The Holy Virgin Mary," depicts Mary with
dark skin, African features and flowing robes. It features
a shellacked clump of elephant dung and two dozen cutouts
of buttocks from pornographic magazines.

The artist, Chris Ofili, 30, a black Catholic who was born
in England and lives there, has said he used the
pornographic images because classical images of Mary are
often "sexually charged."

He also told Salon magazine in February: "Elephant dung in
itself is quite a beautiful object."

Ofili began using elephant dung during a six-week stay in
Zimbabwe. He is now famous for using the material -- which
he gets from the London Zoo -- in virtually all his
artwork. In 1998, he won Britain's prestigious Turner
Prize, a $33,000 award for artists under 50.

The bigot TBarksdl interprets the artist as:

Hey, thanks for straightening this out for us, pal. I'm sure Christians
all over the world are reading your explanation and nodding, "Oh, now I
get it".

Sheesh...

I don't know what "Sheesh..." means in english. But you cannot
arbitarily single out and censor a Black artists work just because Mayor
Giuliani decided that it was offensive to HIM. Mayor Giuliani is
obviously art ignorant and maybe never saw a Black Virgin Mary
before but he cannot deny other American art viewers the right to see
the art work and decide for themselves.
Are you willing to let some public official decide what you can see
which painting or not?
