Tuesday, September 12th, 7:30 pm at the historic Wealthy Theatre, in
Grand Rapids. This majestic venue will feature Mamadou Diabate, Vinx
and Bill Vits of the Grand Rapids Symphony. It's definitely worth the
trip to see a performer in this intimate theatre, for the acoustics and
atmosphere. There are highly rated yet inexpensive restaurants nearby
to visit before the show, including an Ethiopian cafe, an Indian
restaurant, and many more.
Diabate is the headliner. He was born in Mali, and is descended from a
long line of Manding musician-storytellers, the jeli, sometimes
referred to by the French term griot. Jelis are more than just
traditional musicians. They use music and sometimes oratory to preserve
and sustain people's consciousness of the past.
