Where are you, and what pastels do you favor? I think there's a
decent chance that in many areas you might be able to get away with
something a bit pastel--maybe a lavender or apricot or something that
doesn't scream SPRING!!! quite as loudly as, say, pink or yellow.
The further south you are, the easier it is to get away with it too.
After all, some parts of the country are still pretty steamy in
September. My sister was married in September and had her attendants
in lavender (short sleeves too) for an outdoor wedding in Virginia
and it looked perfectly sensible. It was still quite warm and
the flowers were in bloom. Now, if you were in Minnesota, that would
be a bit harder to pull off ;-)
If you do feel a need to head toward deeper tones, it would really
depend on what you're more drawn to. You might just go with a deeper
value of the pastels you like the most. Some people who like pastels
are mostly reacting to the brightness and clarity of the colors, so
if you're that sort, you might look toward a jewel tone (a pretty
amethyst purple, or a sapphire blue). Some lighter colors seem almost
neutral lately, like that pale, icy blue so many people are choosing.
That could almost be a *wintery* color, even. You could also go with
a more neutral color, like silver, taupe, or whatever.
In the end, it really boils down to what colors you respond to
and that suit your setting. I certainly don't think you have to go
with burgundy, green, orange, gold, or whatever else strike you as
quintessential fall colors. A little creativity will probably get
you to something you like that won't look inappropriate in your
environment come September.
Good luck,
Ericka
1. September is still summer till the 21st, albeit late summer.
2. Don't think about colors until you go shopping to see what's
available. If you set your heart on a particular shade and no
bridal designer is using it for next summer or fall, what will you do?
Take care of the reservations and vendors and leave the colors till
you can "shop the season". Select from what's available and you will
have lots fewer headaches.

For my September 15, SF Bay Area wedding, the bridesmaids are wearing
eggplant (dark, rich purple).
How about a muted, dusty or brownish pink?

This is what I originally thought. To go with a mauve or dusty rose...maybe I
still will. I like those colors anyway. Thanks for making the picture seem
clearer.
