5. Snipr/Snipurl Tips for Users of Modern Browsers

You use Firefox. You love your extensions. You wonder: why doesn't Snipr do an extension?

Simple: extensions take a non-trivial amount of your system RAM (memory), especially in the Mozilla framework, and we're humble enough to know that we don't need to add to that bloat.

Snipr is simple enough without any extensions and works with almost every modern browser such as Firefox, Opera, IE, Safari, and Camino. Below are some simple steps that you can follow to set up the Snipr shortcut. When you are done, you will be able to either click on your shortcut on the bookmarks toolbar as usual, or even better, simply type a letter (such as "s") and the snipping will show up.

1. Drag the new "Snip!" shortcut on to your toolbar.

Go to the main page and look for the "Snip!" shortcut in the Tools menu at the bottom of the page.

If dragging doesn't work for whatever reason (some security setting or the other), then don't bother. Just right-click on the "Snip!" link, copy the link (it begins with "javascript:" because it's a bookmarklet), and just create a new bookmark with the copied link. Click here for some thoughts if the shortcut doesn't work.

2. For this bookmark, add a "nickname" such as the letter "S", or if that is taken by some other URL you have previously bookmarked, then something equally simple such as "snip". In Opera, the nickname is already included when you add a bookmark. In Firefox, we recommend the extension MR Tech Install or OpenBook, which provide a useful feature to put shortcuts to our most commonly used URLs. In IE, depending on whether you use Maxthon or Slimbrowser, the nickname functionality is added outside of IE.

3. That's it. From now on, when you are on a site, just type this nickname in the URL location bar, and your regular Snipr window will popup.

4. To truly enhance your snipping, you can store some settings in your browser by visiting the Profile page and saving those settings. I have said "Yes" to auto-copying the snipped URL (which we highly recommend for Firefox users) and a "Yes" also for auto-closing the window (which is up to your preference) in 3 seconds.

After these settings, I now simply type the letter S when I want to snip a website, a small window pops up as shown below, and then disappears in 3 seconds. The snipping is in my clipboard. Even better than an extension.

Hi Joe,
Sounds like some security setting somewhere. Which version of Firefox
do you have, and what security settings have you installed?
