My Smoothieboard just arrived and I'm eager to bring it to life.

I have a dual power supply ready to go - the idea was to use the 5V/1.5A output from the power supply to power to the 5Vin pad, and the other output to supply power to VBBin. If the 5Vin is being supplied by my power supply, will there be a problem when I hook up the USB cable?

Hello Michael,
Will not be such a problem , in fact all computers and printers for
instance have different power supply.

That's good to hear - I wanted to be cautious as I've worked with microcontrollers that aren't able to have USB as well as external Vin (the Teensy comes to mind).

Wait a second. Would you please explain more ?
With usb cable both devices (computer and printer) will have a common GND connection but their own supply (+5V for instance) are not connected to other device.

Hi !

Nope that won't be a problem, the smoothieboard will smartly get power from the one of usb and 5v that gives it the most voltage.
But if you connect usb, you don't really need to connect 5V anyway ( unless you want to be able to unplug from the host computer while printing ).

Cheers !

Eventually I'd like to be able to have the machine run without a host computer, which is one reason supplying the 5V is appealing. It's good to know that I can do both without issue until then. Thanks!
