We had a fairly late dinner on Christmas, so when I woke up at 6:30 AM
on Saturday with upper abdominal pain, I thought it was indigestion. As
the pain increased I thought I had eaten something bad. As it got even
worse and unbearable, I feared the worst and had my wife get me to the
hospital. By 4:30 I was in surgery having my gallbladder removed. A
stone had completed blocked the neck and tube coming in from the liver.
Apparently this is a bad thing! Doc says that my GB was in pretty bad
shape and I have probably been misdiagnosing my frequent "indigestion".
Just got home, found a comfortable place to sit at the computer and now
I'm trying to figure out how in the world I am ever going to modify my
died to be low fat. Should be a challenge!

Learn to cook hot and fast???

Glad to see/hear it wasn't more serious.  And you're back home on Sunday night.  They kick you out the hosspistol pretty quick these days.

I'm really happy to hear that it wasn't more worser.  Stay with us Merrill!!!  You are one of the good 'uns.

Welcome to the club Merrill. I had the same scenario except there were no stones, so I still have my gall bladder. The doctor said it as my liver, so I'm on a low fat diet too. It doesn't mean no fat and it doesn't mean constant low fat. I have found I can "splurge" fairly regularly and get away with it. I keep playing it Julia's way: all things in moderation. I was in the hospital in the summer. No attacks since, so... so far, so good.

Trust me, I'll do anything to avoid another incident! I know you know what I mean.

Glad you're home and on the mend. Good thoughts your way friend.

Hey Merrill,

Glad they found it! It took about a year for them to diagnose mine. They
took mine in '92 and I've had very few problems. The axle grease they use to
fry foods at the fast food joints and peanuts are the only 2 things I have
to stay away from. I don't eat fast food... but I sure like peanuts.

Glad your feeling better.

my brother was working as an EMT when he had an attack, his partner did not have a valid license, so he drove himself to the hospital in the ambulance.... Did I mention it happened in Wendy's parking lot.

Removed the gall bladder the next morning.

Buy Green peanuts if you can.
Buy RAW if you can't find them "green".

You can, I discovered, use a crock pot overnight.  Season the way you want.

I discovered that a half cup of Tony Chachere Creole seasoning ain't enough!!  But be careful of the salt.  ½ to ¾ cup ought to be enough for 2-3 lbs and two quarts of water…  (or enough to cover the peanuts…. hell, they float!)

John,

If it was the lunch at Moon's that did Merrill at least he went out in
a big way, the Jumpball, a big ol' pile of Italian Sausage, 3-eggs,
cheese, onions and potatoes all mixed together and served with
buttered toast. This is one heck of a breakfast.

I am including a picture of a Jumpball, it's not a great picture, but
you get the idea. ~smile~

Enjoy,

My dad had his gallbladder removed and said later that he lost 50 pounds.  I told him I was surprised that a gallbladder weighed that much!  A few years later my wife had to have her gallbladder removed, and I told her the joke about Dad.  It piqued her curiosity, so right before her surgery (but after the drugs) she asked how much a "wallgladder" weighed.

Hope they used the new technique like they did on Shannon, and your recovery is a quick and full one!

Merrill,

Sorry to hear about your problem over the holiday. Holidays are a bad time
to go to the hospital. I had my heart attack on Christmas day in 2004 and
when I got to the coronary ward, the doctor told me that he was there
because he was low on seniority. The only way that the "long beards" would
come in is if blood were spraying out. I was put in a holding pattern for
three days until the holiday weekend was over before getting my
cathertization.
As far as living without a gall bladder it is fairly easy. Earlier in 2004,
I had mine removed in an outpatient surgery. I went home about a half hour
after I woke up. While every surgery has risks and possible problems, in my
case, it was almost nothing. I have had more pain getting a tooth filled.
I did not need to take any pain pills. Of course, I am trained to deal with
chronic pain in my back and this was less than I deal with daily. For diet,
your body will let you know how you are doing. If you eat too much fat, you
will feel it and you will not want as much, but I found that there was very
little difference than with the bad gall bladder in place as that caused a
similar condition. The short answer is that you probably will feel better
and not need much adjustment in your diet.
Of course, maybe I should be more careful as earlier this year the bile duct
that now connects my liver directly to my digestive tract got plugged with
stones. (This is where the gall bladder was removed) I felt really bad and
the whites of my eyes started turning yellow before the largest stone
passed. The doctor had to put a scope down my throat through my stomach and
make a turn into the bile duct. He cleaned out what he called "sludge"
(must be a technical term) and cut a larger opening in the end of the duct
so that stones could pass easier. Since then, I have twice had the
beginning of the same thing, but it passed without getting bad. The doctors
can't explain why I keep forming stones as this is rare without a gall
bladder.
Anyway, I am glad that you are feeling better.

I'm trying to be supportive of my local doctors so I had a heart surgeon and his family over for brisket last night.  He looked kind of scruffy and was on call so he had to deal with questions from the hospital but, all in all, it was a good evening.  I was smart enough, however, that when I got my heart cath last year I avoided a weekend or holiday.  I recall that the ER nurse ran from the room after she took my blood pressure and my wife tells me that it was so high that sticking an IV in my arm sprayed blood across the room.  Do long beards measure judge spraying by quantity, by source, or by distance?  I just don't want to fail the test if it is offered again.  :-)

Kevin,

The Jumpball looks a big mess, but it sure is tasty. Me, I typically
get two over easy, grits and split an order of corned beef, Moon's has
outrageous corned beef. A buddy likes to order the Jumpball with a
side of grilled hot Polish.

Looks like a little bacon snuck into the corned beef picture. ~smile~
