Fellas, I recently moved back to the US (Alabama) to live with my
aging mom, after being away for 20+ years. In Asia I used a gas grill
(which I didn't bring with me), since I'm back in the US, which an
English friend calls "The Land of Convenience", I want to go to lump.
I don't want to spend a lot of money on a grill/smoker, at least in
the beginning, as I'm not working at the moment. I'm thinking of
buying a Weber Kettle Gold 22.5in, which looks like it will do what I
want. To be honest, day to day, I'll probably do more grilling than
low and slow.

Any thoughts or opinions will be highly appreciated.

PS: don't own an Apple (unless you count iTunes, which I don't like
but have for podcasts) and stand to the left of the aisle, but not too
far.

Drew,
You can't go wrong with a Weber Kettle. I have the Silver, Gold and
Performer and enjoy using them all. I will say that you get slightly
better air control with the silver as it does not have the ash bucket
attached to restrict some air flow to the vents. However, you lose the
ability to catch your ashes which is a very handy and clean feature.

Thanks Merrill, especially for the Silver v Gold perspective.  I like the ash catcher as I'll use the Weber on my mom's back deck and, as you say, clean-up will be easier, however, I'll give some thought to air flow v convenience.  How do you handle the ash on the Silver?

As for accessories, I plan to get the Charcoal Chimney Starter.  Any thoughts on Char Basket Charcoal Fuel Basket?  Any other accessories you would recommend?

Get a Weber kettle and one of these: http://smokenator.com/ I saw one in action when Meathead did a promotion, and I won one in his raffle. :) (Unfortunately, mine was stolen out of my shed.) Anyway, Meathead swears by it, and he knows a lot more about this than I do. :)

Drew,
The Silver clears the ashes the same as the Gold, but it does not have the ash bucket attached.  The vent works exactly the same, but the bucket on the Gold creates a bit of air restriction.  You just compensate by opening the vent more.  If you are concerned about mess or embers, I'd probably go with the Gold.  My performer came with two charcoal baskets.  I don't smoke in my kettle, so having two is great for cooking whole spatchcocked chickens.  Vents full open with chicken in the middle, coals on both sides and a water pan in the middle.  45 minutes yields a beautiful, moist bird with a hint of smoke flavor.  The baskets and a chimney are the only accessories I use.

If you want to have a little more fun or more volume with your grilling, Lowes has a Master Forge grill for $199.  It allows you to adjust the distance of your charcoal to the grill surface.  Gary W. was playing with one last summer and I think he said it did a fair job.

I bought a wire tray at the 100 yen store and cut it two, makes a perfect charcoal basket and it's adjustable.

He's been getting something big ready for us. Several courses. Lots of garnishes. Slices of tuna from fish that were *asked* to come aboard the boat so they don't have that post-catch stress bitterness. And tomatoes shipped in from Indonesia in foam packing, along with lots of ripe durian.
