It is a fine day here, sunny and possibly getting up to 40F! Woo! Got
a half-a-brisket (a hair under 6 pounds) on at 6:30, did some chicken
breasts early, just added some fuel and put on a meatloaf (3 lbs). I'm
hoping to be done around 3, give or take. The only thing I haven't
decided is who to root for today. I've liked the Steelers since the
old Steel Curtain days, but I really like Kurt Warner's inspirational
story. (And his babe wife.)

Hey Merrill, you having your shindig again?

Scott,
"Chicago's Largest Sober Super Bowl Party" kicks off this afternoon with
about 300 in attendance. Game will be on a 12' screen and we're serving
popcorn, chili, pizza, nachos and brownies. No BBQ this year, too much
on my plate to pull it off. This year the NFL is even allowing us to
have the party legally!

bad. Wife's making some spinach dip. Not sure what else yet.

One of our local supermarkets had pork butts, 2 per package, for $.88/lb, the other day. They were huge – about 10 lbs, each. I cooked two of them overnight, last night – one for a friend, one for us. Had pulled pork for lunch, today. Mixed in my variation of Danny's Glaze (make up a recipe of Danny's Glaze, but add 1/4 cup barbecue sauce plus 1/4 cup Southern Comfort). Good stuff!

Hi Stan. This is Nathan from the SmokeRing list. Thanks for your facebook invitation! =)

Not really sure how the thing works so I stuck to regular email. The reason that I finally relented and joined up was that I got almost 30 requests to add me as a friend (or were those invitations to join? can't remember exactly) from my high school classmates over the last week. We're celebrating our 25th year away from Xavier < www.xs.edu.ph > this year and our batch is supposed to host this year's alumni homecoming. Somebody had the bright idea of bringing everybody together online via facebook... as if the yahoo e-group wasn't enough, huh?

Anyhow, I'm not complaining. its good to catch up with everyone. We were a small batch of 128 students and, after 13 years of seeing each other almost daily in school, you pretty much know each other's temperaments and personalities.

Nathan, I'm still learning about FaceBook, myself, since I just joined about a month ago. I've been using it to try to find and re-connect with some of my former students from the past 30 years, and it's been lots of fun! Imagine learning that the dorky little kid in my junior high band back in the mid-'80s is now a college professor in NYC! One girl is living in Nashville, now, and is both a professional musician and a model. So far, I've managed to put almost 200 people on my "friends list". I've even found some of my childhood friends that I'd completely lost touch with, over the years.

For anyone else on this mailing list who might be interested, there are actually a number of us barbecue types on FaceBook: me, Nathan, Bill Martin, Garry Howard, Gary Wiviott, Jason Perrigin, Bruce Cook, Buzz, Gerry, Sandra and Kyle, Meathead, Rock, and several others. It may even be that there are others whom I haven't found, yet. Feel free to join us! You might even get an invite from one or more of us. :)

Has anyone thought about setting up a separate Facebook account for the Smoke Ring List?  They did that on the FoodWine mailing list and a whole bunch of subscribers joined.  Of course after that nobody knew what to do with it and nobody's posted anything since...   :-)

I thought maybe Garry had set up a SmokeRing "group", but I can't find it if he has. Shouldn't be too much trouble to do, though. There are also several barbecue-related groups on FaceBook, as well.

There is a Smoke Ring page on Facebook.

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/The-Smoke-Ring/54370494536

I didn’t intend to make that a substitute for the mailing list or the online forum on the Smoke Ring website.

A woman I dated my first year in college in 1966 found me on there. Of
course, she dumped me for another guy when I was home for the summer! I had
to remind her of that fact. :-)

It isn’t setup as a group. You can join as a fan. I already have this mailing list and the online forum to maintain. I don’t need another one.
