Our campus has a small local bbq competition each year. It's a scholarship fund raiser, basically. A friend and I were going to compete this year, but decided to just check it out instead since neither of us have done this before.

I just got back. Although a handful of teams had signed on, NONE showed! It got a little chilly last night (30s) and the winds picked up--no one is there. A frat pulled in while we talked, with an old grill. There's no way they can do anything more than burgers before turn-in...but they'll win the "other" category by default. :(

Darrell, who runs the contest, used to run his own joint. He's been there since 3 this morning cooking for the student festivities this evening (the cafeteria is closed, and the students all get 'cue instead of dorm food). Darrell encouraged me to enter, and told me we could use any smoker we wanted--didn't matter--just come compete!

We should have signed up!

Oh well, next year.

University of Tennessee Martin. Small university in a small town--with the associated advantages and disadvantages. It's a good place to raise kids, but only if you're willing and able to help them understand there's more to life than one small town!

I was disappointed also. We should have signed up. While we had no intention of winning (it's always nice), it would have been fun. My friend plays guitar and I'm learning, so we planned to just hang out and practice while we cooked. Oh well--we'll do that anyway, and maybe sign up next year. Honestly the no-shows had probably already paid the entry fee.

Just be kind of de-flating for the organizers to try and do a fun event, and have no one participate.  They have a bbq contest on the beach here past two years, had something else planned before I heard about date.  Was there last year on Fri just to eat and walk around.  Catering is real slow so may try with another bbq guy to hit a couple CHEAP entry fee events, don't care about the big payouts just have some fun.

Thanks!

I'm sure it is frustrating for them. The guy who runs it caught me on campus one day and told me to bring anything, any smoker, whatever, and come join them. The entry fee is $100--not bad, really. We were going to split it between 2-4 people and just go have fun hanging out. I think we'll probably do it next year. None of us are really serious about competing (yet...if ever) but it would be fun. I like supporting scholarship fundraisers anyway. If you're interested, let me know and I'll send the information to you. It will be next spring before they do this again.
