I just retrieved a ceramic Wild Turkey bottle, I bought for my Mother in 1976. It was in a closet, in a box, seal unbroken
since then. I could tell the cork must have dried out since some evaporation was evident. When putting back in the box
my sister broke the cork and seal. With that out of the way, would it still be safe to take a little sip?

Thanks,
Rick Mortimer

Safe? yes. The alcohol would keep any pathogens from growing. Liquor does not age once in the bottle and with some evaporated, it may not taste the same, but try it; you have nothing to lose.

I would advise against trying it.  Send it to me, and I'll check it out.

Seriously, if the cork has dried, most of the alcohol is probably gone.  Flavor might remain, so maybe OK for cooking.

Well, I might have been wrong on the evaporation. Just transferred it to a Mason jar and I'll be damned
if it didn't fill right to the top. Not sure if it was 26 or 28 oz. jar, but wife says a fifth is 25.5 or so.
To be honest I'm not much of whiskey drinker. (blame youthful exuberance) BUTT, this was very smooth,
taste was excellent. Will have to set back for a special occasion.

They recently recovered some Scotch whiskey that Robert Scott had cached before his race to the South Pole in 1911.  A sample was drawn so the distillery could try to duplicate the blend and the rest was returned to Antarctica.  No one supposedly took a taste but there was no question about whether it was safe or not.

I had a chance to taste some wine from George Washington time (1795) at the Herbfarm in Woodinville, WA, but it was $365 an ounce, a little steep for me.
