Fatal error with modifiercompiler.escape.php

I'm testing Smarty 3.1.7 in my project but every time I use the
modifier escape I get this fatal error.

Fatal error: Access to undeclared static property: Smarty::$_CHARSET
in ###SMARTYPATH###/plugins/modifiercompiler.escape.php on line 30

This is the code snippet where I use the escape modifier:

{$information['title']|escape:"html"}

if I set Smarty::$_CHARSET to UTF-8 all seems to work.

It does look like that you did not update the Smarty.class.php file

My Smarty.class.php file and all the smarty files are directly extracted
from the tarball that I have downloaded from:
http://www.smarty.net/files/Smarty-3.1.7.tar.gz

Let me test deeper cause this error only raises in some situations and I
think that is not Smarty library related.
