It is with our most sincere condolences that we note the recent passing of Mrs. Freida Simmons-Rahman, the esteemed wife of freelance photo journalist Ali Rahman, a longtime community activist. 2. Tribute to Roland Alexander

Friday, September 8, 2006, beginning at 7pm.

 

Our beloved brother and legendary saxophonist Roland Alexander will be memorialized by many of the musicians and vocalists who knew him well, on Fri., Sept. 8th, from 7pm at 966. ('C' train to Clinton/Washington station).
 
A steadfast Brooklyn resident for well over fifty years, Roland Alexander was a most respected musicians who played alongside such collaborators as John Coltrane, Cal Massey, Reggie Workman, Charli Persip, Freddy Hubbard, Eddie Gale, Archie Shepp, 
Ahmed Abdullah, the Collective Black Artists Orchestra, the Sun Ra All-Stars Project, among the many, many.

 

For well over thirty years, Roland shared a working collaboration with Kiane  Zawadi. Their ensemble was a New York mainstay, appearing in a host of local venues, from the days of The East straight up to Harlem and Central 

Brooklyn's current Jazz spots. All are invited. For more information, call 718.638.6910.

3. National Writers Union Meets

The New York Chapter of the National Writers Union will be holding a general membership meeting on Saturday, September 9, 2006, beginning at 3pm, at the Lafayette Grill & Bar, located at 54-56 Franklin Street, in Manhattan, just three blocks south of Canal Street, between Lafayette and Broadway. On the agenda: nominations for the chapter's Steering Committee (from 3 to 5pm). 
 
Later that evening, the New York/New Jersey chapters will host a reception at the same Lafayette Grill & Bar for NWU's newly elected National Executive Committee (5 to 7pm). All writers (creative and freelancers alike) wanting to join the National Writers Union are welcomed. 5. Plans for a Black Arts Conference

The Black Arts and Culture Committee of the BBEC will hold its third meeting on Thurs., Sept. 21st, at 80 Hanson Place, 8th fl., in Downtown Brooklyn. On the agenda: to plan a conference for Brooklyn's Black Arts and Culture Community. To this end, Brooklyn Artists are encouraged to be at this next meeting to help shape the agenda.

Spearheading this effort are representatives from the Paul Robeson Theatre, 
Imani House, the Lewis Gallery, BESAA / Zion Gallery, BAM's LCD, and a number of artists across genres.

6. "Not Enough Space" Art Opening

The National Boricua Human Rights Network presents Not Enough Space, an exhibition of artwork by Puerto Rican political prisoners Carlos Alberto Torres and Oscar Lopez Rivera (both of whom have been incarcerated for 25 years on behalf of Puerto Rican independence). 
 
The exhibition will feature paintings, ceramic works, and a simulated jail cell installation, will open on Friday, September 22nd, at Taller Boricua, and run through through November 4th. Special guests include former political prisoner Dylcia Pagán and Jose Lopez, Director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Chicago.
 
Taller Boricua is located on the first floor of Julia De Burgos Latino Cultural Center, 1680 Lexington Avenue (at 106th St.), in Manhattan (the number 6 train to 103rd Street). For more information contact the National Boricua Human Rights Network:

The Louis Reyes Rivera 1st & 3rd Saturday Writers' Workshop at Sistas' Place opens its 5th year, on Sat., Sept. 16, 2006, starting at 12pm. This first session will outline plans for the year, establish reading schedules for work to be critiqued, and resume workshop sessions that begin Saturday, October 7th and Saturday, October 21st, and continue every 1st and 3rd Saturday through July 2007.

8. Millions for Reparations Film
Sunday, September 17, 2006, at 3pm
 
Sistas' Place, in collaboration with Millions for Reparations, presents The Durban 400, a film by Imam Dramah and Al Santana about the World Conference Against Racism, on Sun., Sept. 17th, at 3pm.
 
The World Conference Against Racism had passed a resolution stating that the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery were Crimes Against Humanity for which reparations are due.

14. Voices in the Diaspora
Sunday, October 22, 2006, from 2 to 6pm
 
Sistas' Place is hosting Voices in the Diaspora's From Page to Stage (an afternoon of poetry and fiction by authors from the Louis Reyes Rivera Writers Workshop), Sun., Oct. 22nd. This collaborative project is the first of a series of programs to be videotaped and later aired on MNN (Manhattan Neighborhood Network's Sacred Expressions) and on 99.5 FM Radio (WBAI's Voices in the Diaspora). 
 
Among the writers featured are Amadi Ajamu, Sister Akosua, E.J. Antonio, 
Lisa Bailey, Alice Crowe, Alicia Crowe, Yvonne Hilton, A. Victoria Hunter, Tony Mitchelson, Baaqia Muhammad, Clarence Robins, Chris Smith, Ed Toney, Iowan Tribal and Louis Reyes Rivera. 
 
To help defray production costs, there is a Suggested Donation of $7.00 per person and $11.00 per couple.
